1. I changed from a 1212L to a Barefaced Compact about 5 -6 years ago and never looked back. The Compact (G1/2) is as loud but much, much deeper than the 1212L. They are both great cabs but I prefer the Compact over the 1212L for the warmer and deeper sound. Frank.
 2. Great work! It must have taken ages to put that together. Thanks very much. I do love the sound of the '72, although the 2008 is close. The big impression for me is that the differences are subtle. So really, they all sound fantastic. I love the sound of a jazz bass. Frank.
 3.
Do they still rain bad acts with bottles of piss at festivals? Was always a feature at Donnington and Reading.
I'm bustin' to go right now and I can't think of a better use for it. Frank.
 4. I've watched it all so far - trying to be open-minded and like it but.. what a pile of absolute sh*(e. The worst part, and there are many, was his attempt to sing along with Queen. Flat and tuneless. Dreadful. Frank.
 5. I've posted about this in another thread recently but I also bought a EC28 very cheaply a few months back. I wanted a combo for a handy lift to rehearsals. I could have bought the 210 or 115 for the same price but chose the EC28 as I have bigger rigs for gigging. At the first rehearsal I was slightly disappointed but as the speakers loosened up the sound started to bloom and get louder. I really like the tone and the volume is fine for rehearsals and maybe a small pub gig although I haven't gigged it yet. So yes, I like this combo. I said in the other thread that I don't think it's worth the normal £439 but at less than £200 delivered it's an absolute bargain. Frank.
 6. These are really top class basses from that era. I had one for many years and if I wasn't looking for a very lightweight bass (Due to back pain) I would be seriously considering buying this beauty. Frank.
 7. The 500w Rumble combo is under £400.00 at Thomann just now which includes delivery and a 3 year guarantee. Hard to beat deal on a good sounding combo. Frank.
 8.
Havings said that, VJ's perspective from the top end of the playing scale is a great resource as well. IMO
Most definately! I did say that in my post as well but maybe didn't make it as clear as I should. Frank.
 9.
absolutely, he pulled the same crap on Talkbass website; lording scientific knowledge over all else; everyone is sick of his drivel there and now he's polluting this website with the same acedemic elitist approach. Now that he wants to compare actual bass playing, I'm so happy!! :-) still waiting for those clips to back up your statements Mr. F. :-)
That's a bit harsh! It's only an internet forum. That sounds like he's insulted your mother or something equally monstrous. I for one enjoy Bill's posts and he's welcome here as far as I'm concerned. That doesn't mean I won't enjoy your posts as well. Frank.
 10. I used to have a CMD121P and an older (smaller) 1 x 15 traveller. Seemed to work well enough. I never had any adverse comments from punters or complaints from sound-men. Still, the New York 1 x 12 would be my first choice for that combo as they will match well for certain and they are the same size. Frank.
 11.
oh, this is gonna be great! Please, please Bill post some of your best bass playing clips; I can't wait!! :-)
That comes across as a bit personal. Is there some history of conflict here? Frank.
 12.
Your 'engineer' is talking out of his bass port.

Your 'engineer' is talking out of his bass port.
Hahahaha. Excellent. Frank.
 13.
Well seeing as you asked Alex, I think that saying you were married for ten years before you shot your wife isn't much of a defence. Nor is the fact that other people have shot their wives. Not that I'm suggesting you have ever shot your wife, of course. By the way, what did they get you for? Spamming the discussion threads?
Thats taking sh!t stirring into the region of an art form. Excellent! Frank.
 14.
Well, I've heard his cabs and some guys playing thru them. I've also seen them... I'd go along with the mid league table description in the cab world as mentioned previously. So, yes, I don't buy into the whole thing, I'm afraid. Others might not agree, ..oh well..!! The other issue I seem to come across is how come it is ok to promote a certain brand which you are connected to which others can't seem to do. FWIW, I have no connections with any cab maker...but if a cab maker was so vocal they'd probably need to pay in affiliations..??
Thanks for the reply.... Although I wasn't taIking about Barefaced cabs at all. I was referring to the opposite opinions from yourself and Alex over adding or reducing bass and how, from a non-technical viewpoint, you would prove yourself to be correct and Alex wrong. To me, your reply to Alex wasn't helpful as there were no facts or counter argument. To be honest, I was being a bit mischievous because I didn't believe you could do it. The fact that I'm a long term Barefaced user has no bearing on this for me either. I also use other cabs and I'm open minded to new innovations - but the engineer in me tends to lead me to wanting to know the technical details more than a persons subjective opinion alone. I read a post recently where a Compact owner said his Compact struggled when powered by his 200 watt amp. The fact is, the amp was struggling, not the cab. So there you have an example of where having technical knowledge is hugely beneficial. Keep the cab and buy a new amp, not the other way around. I've noticed this myself when powering my Compact with my Mesa Walkabout - if you demand too much the Walkabout starts to overdrive rather than give more volume. That doesn't happen with my Streamliner 900 though, it just gives me higher volume for those (very rare) occasions when I need that it. I still believe technical specifications are important, in conjunction with subjective listening, preferably on a gig. That's a long post for me. Frank.
 15.
If he has applied to your advert then something is not quite right with the ridiculously good thing...IMO People generally gravitate to their perceived level as things are just so much easier that way and you have less chance of someone getting peed off...either trying too hard to keep up or the other guys trying too hard to pull you along... By all means meet and see what common ground you have... but novice and ridiculously good don't generally mix, tbh.. Good luck tho..
Totally agree with this. Right on the money. Frank.
 16.
oh dear, I don't know where to start, but I'll not bother, thanks. Carry on as you are.
You could start by proving Alex wrong and, with your extensive knowledge of bass guitar loudspeaker cabinets, that should be easy enough for you. You and Alex are in totally opposing positions on the issue - I would love to know who is right and who is wrong here. And I would look forward to learning something from your rebuttal. Frank.
 17.
.....who would you listen to when it comes to recommending a football shoe, the salesman at Nike who played a bit in primary school or the guy with a lifetime pro career who's played in a few World Cups? Please, while useful to some degree for comparison, let's end this ridiculous notion that specs determine what it actually SOUNDS like. It just doesn't.
I think that's an inappropriate comparison. It might be fairer to compare a world class coach who has managed many teams to many victories to a pro player who has played in a few world cups. Anyway, as an engineer of 30+ years and a musician of 47 years, I think there's room for both approaches and I can see no reason whatsoever to favour one over the other, or indeed to exclude one or the other. Frank.
 18. This Fender stand takes care of the shape of the jazz bass and is very strong and stable. http://www.andertons.co.uk/guitar-stands/pid24679/cid584/fender-universal-a-frame-electric-guitar-stand.asp?LGWCODE=24679;56375;2717&utm_source=googlebase&utm_term=0991819000&utm_medium=pricecomp&utm_campaign=GoogleShopping&gclid=CI7pnbC0t8UCFczJtAodp3kAYw Frank.

 20.
Agreed. There is a place for both (real) science and real world experience. It is a shame that each side seems so scathing about and intolerant of the other though...
Exactly! But wait - are we in danger of seeing a concensus here? Careful now. Down with that sort of thing. Frank.
 21.
Bill, Alex et al have all got the ears, they have heard what they like/don't like and what is good/bad about speakers, they have learnt why things break/sound crap/sound great. They have the science AND the ears IMO But I think that's what you're getting at isn't it JTUK; one without the other is not so great
That's a far better explanation than mine. Frank.
 22.
What I'm saying is, if you work at the top end of the scale, everyone else is of that calibre. The players, the studio the engrs ...ect ect..the whole chain. You don't work at that level if you don't know sound and have a great talent for getting it. It is such a core part of the whole process.
OK now I understand and thanks for explaining. Although I will say that it doesn't make any sense to dismiss professional acoustic/electrical/mechanical engineering in favour of the ears of good players. And there are lots of successful and talented musicians, singers and song-writers who have a poor understanding of the basics of acoustics. Some of them don't really care about things like tone, and that's fair enough. Each to their own. I would far rather base my initial selection of bass guitar cabs on their technical specifications. That way you can eliminate those that are obvious poor performers and then move on to using your ears, but - I would never buy a cab based solely on listening to it. It is so easy to be fooled depending on a variety of factors. But for those who don't understand the technical side (or have no interest in learning or simply lack the aptitude) then listening to the advice of those who have the technical knowledge is surely just sensible. Isn't it? Frank.
 23.
But again...you have a stellar pro who pretty much lives or dies by what he can get out of his bass, amp and cab and no one is hiring him if he doesn't sound GREAT. So maybe, there are people who REALLY understand what they are hearing and how they get the sound up and make it work. This is likely beyond the vast majority of us on this forum, tbh and IMV. Sure, talk about science..but if you haven't got ears, you'll likely be the only one in a room who thinks the end result is any good.. If you are talking about reference...who actually endorses your opinions of sound..?? A book..?? If you are amongst the best in the business, it is very very likely you will also be working with other best in the business guys who know sound inside out. I know where my money would go.. tbf..!!
I've read that several times and I have no idea of what you're saying - sorry. Frank.
 24. That's beautiful Danny. The best colour in the range for me. I'm still hoping to come to hear your BB2 sometime. Frank.
