1.
The bass would have to stand up as an instrument first and foremost but my next bass is going to be RW block and bound so there aren't many places I can start. I have the 5st thing covered with 2 excellent, IMO basses so I am looking at the aesthetics as well so that rules out anything without those and the DJ5 is tooooo passive sounding. Whether a pre amp was rescue it, I am not sure but I wouldn't pay more than £700 or so for one anyway. I pretty much know what I am going to have to get from what I have found and played so far.
Don't discount the MIM classic series either. (The classic 70s is rosewood, bound and blocked) They are excellent basses and well worth the money. The neck on mine is ever so slightly deeper to the touch than my US 75 RI but strangely, it measures the same, so it must have a slightly different profile? Edit. My US 75 RI is also the more rare rosewood board which, to my eyes, looks much nicer than the more common maple fretboards. Not everyone will agree with this of course. Frank.
 2. These are superb all-round gigging basses. I have the same one (minus the matching headstock). I find I nver need the active circuit at all. It's plenty loud and punchy in passive mode. There's a little time needed to find the sounds that you like - there are so many possibilities. It's well worth the effort. Frank.
 3.
American Deluxe would be my starting point..
Yes. A good call. I've owned a couple and the most recent ones are a big improvement over the early ones. i like the additional fret and the smaller body too. They are very pricy though. Frank.
 4. Great news that it's working for you Chris. Everything you've said only serves to make me regret selling mine even more. At one time I'd even decided to buy another identical CMD121P. The idea was that I always had a spare amp in case one broke at a gig. Never did get around to that one though. Glad you're enjoying yours and I think you'll be amazed at the sound if you add another cab. Frank.
 5.
MIM Classic Series ................................................that's all
Yes!! My 70s classic jazz is a gem. Not quite as good as the US 75 reissue but only about 33% of the new price and easily good enough to be my only bass. Frank.
 6. Well Chris. How did the baby Markbass perform? Frank.
 7.
What do you think that will tell me..??
What do you think I think that will tell you. Frank.
 8.
I'll clarify..top end 2x210 or a 410 will put paid to a top end 212...
I really don't see how you can justify that general statement without comparing the engineering specifications of the actual cabs in question - or maybe I'm missing something here? Frank.
 9.
They should offer it in other colours though, like red and pink and green and white and stuff. We isn't all old men y'know.
The young being patronising to the old. Makes a change I suppose. Frank.
 10. Very sad news. Frank.
 11. I've been tempted by these since trying one in a local music shop a few months ago. I tried it through one of the new Fender Rumble combos. The bass had been given a proper set-up and played perfectly. I liked the passive switch too. I had a 1997 version of these but sold it because I was going back to four strings at the time. Altogether a great bass. Enjoy it. Frank.
 12. Thanks for all the input. I think the Fender one might suit me best. Frank.
 13. Had a great gig last night. (Friday) The usual drunks were there, but it was all good natured and friendly. Lots of drunken dancing and the standard requests for Mustang Sally. (We didn't play it but Sweet Home Alabama was asked for and we gave in....) Saturdays gig will be a hoot. Frank.
 14.
What do we think of bands that use guitar stands?
They are pretentious twats. or.... We think they don't want their expensive instrument leaning against amps and maybe falling or being knocked over. Frank.
 15. Another vote for the new Fender Rumble combos. They are surprisingly good sounding and loud. Not too expensive either. Frank.
 16. Does anyone know of a stand specifically designed for the jazz bass? A folding one preferred for ease of packing in a gig bag. Thanks. Frank.
 17. My advice would be to buy a used amp of around 100 watts of your local gumtree. It will be far better value and you can sell it on at little or no loss. Frank.
 18.
I love AER, and two would be beaut if it was 20lb lighter! I think I'm actually just addicted to buying new gear!
I know how you feel. I'm lusting after an AER amp three now. Actually, a Markbass CMD121P and NY extension cab makes perfect sense to me. The best of all worlds for the weekend warrior bassist. (Like me) Frank.
 19.
Well I tried it in the shop and the bloke let me put it next to my orange terror bass to compare, terror bass was definitely more dirty and full, but the mark bass was very sweet, and volume wise I cranked them both up and again there wasn't much between them, they're similar up to 12 o'clock and then not much extra on either after that, anyway I got the mark bass, I think I will probably get the extension cab at some point in the future, they're not silly money picked up second hand, band camp on Monday for some mark bass funk, let's see how it gets on.
A very good choice for portability and it's very capable for gigs in small pubs. I had one for a few years and loved it. I still regret selling but at the time I owned a LMII and a barefaced midget so i thought I was covering the same ground twice. The Midget was louder and fuller than the CMD121P. I know you like AER and my AER amp two is way louder, deeper and clearer than the Markbass combo, it fact, it's superior in every way - except weight and size. Frank.
 20. Good post and very true. I have a few basses, all great in their own way, and I rotate them over months or even years and digging out a bass you haven't used for a while, it's like getting a new instrument. You really do appreciate why you bought it originally. Frank.
 21.
Been on the vino tonight Frank?
Haha. How did you guess....??? Frank...
 22.
Deposit.
But then you have to ask yourself...Why didn't you pay in fool (sic)...??? You should have paid in full IMO... I think your (sic) toasted now... IMO, IME.... Frank....??? Frank. EDIT: Yes, I've had... a few... glasses of wine...???
 23.
Have you guys waiting paid in full for these or just deposits?
I've paid for ten but I only want one. Happy...??? But then you have to ask... where will that get you...??? Not far IMO, IME...??? Frank.
 24. I think the price is good without the case. I'm sure this will sell at that price. It might just take a little time, especially with the dreaded festive (ie. expensive) season approaching. Frank.
 25.
I don't hate them..just don't rate them. I have to admit to being totally bemused at the tone goals of the guys I've heard that do use them round here... But whilst they may not have much of a clue as far as I am concerned, it goes quite a bit further than that, IMO.. but we don't have to get into that.
I'd be really interested if you did "get into that" - seriously! I'd love to hear more. And this is not to wind you up. I'm genuinely interested. Frank
