  1. Well, there's always going to be a gallimaufry of opinion on Charles as there's so many aspects to it.
  2. The videos are for entertainment, and they demonstrate what it is possible to do with a bass. It is exactly because it's not the ideal instrument that it provides entertainment. You could stick all the notes into a sequencer and press play and it would produce the same tune, but it wouldn't be in the slightest impressive. As John F Kennedy said, "We choose to play bass on Youtube and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too."
  3. Things have changed somewhat over the last 50 years or so. I remember an advert in Practical Electronics in about 1974 for a power amp IC which featured a, er, stereo pair concealing the bits of a lady obscured by a star in that Tokai advert, and another one for something motorcycle connected featuring Phil and Angie Read naked on a motorcycle (so nobody has to google it, he was a world champion motorcycle racer). Ah, found the Phil and Angie one. Hoping that this isn't deemed too offensive: PS: I feel I should add that Mrs Zero and I have always dressed appropriately when riding on a motorcycle.
  4. Annoyingly, what Schaller did in the transition to S-Locks was slightly increase the size of the strap buttons and the slots in the locks, so S-Lock strap parts will fit onto both old and new strap buttons but old strap locks probably won't fit onto S-Lock buttons. Some Schaller-compatible strap locks (eg Boston) will fit onto S-Locks. So if you grab a bass and a strap for a gig and it's not an S-Lock strap, make sure the strap lock fits the button. DAMHIKIJKOK.
  5. Right, I misinterpreted you as meaning the thread would be non-standard. Those button heads are quite small (diameter and height) so might fit without modification.
  6. Would you like to come up with the corresponding list of how the assorted components of each of these groups would be known? Might make for quite a long thread title though.
  7. It won't be a non-standard screw. Just took a strap button off a Thumb to measure it up and it's M4x20. Due to the size of the head, I think this would be your best bet: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/385069271166 (zinc plated) or https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383632801777 (stainless).
  8. I feel the thread title is a little non-inclusive, as there's nothing stopping bassists having husbands and/or girlfriends.
  9. When you say "we all know", is there some club that I'm not a member of? I'll take a wild stab at Richard Hammond though, even if he does seem half a metre too tall.
  10. Robbie Williams - Angels. With lots of added twiddly bits. Guns'n'Roses - Sweet Child O'Mine. With lots of added twiddly bits. Cockney Rebel - Make me smile. I sing it too for added fun. The Cult - She sells sanctuary. No added twiddly bits, just energy. Rainbow - Since you been gone. Just because it's a song I really enjoy.
  11. I'd be very wary of using acetone around a bass, it's a pretty effective solvent.
  12. I meant Murmunumrirnriruh's comment rather than the bass.
  13. Mrs Zero is quite tolerant. I do generally forewarn her of purchases (I forgot to mention that I was buying a motorcycle though). The view from my end of the settee in our lounge:
  14. https://www.facebook.com/groups/716075135109605 - Jam Nights And Open Mics West Midlands. There's at least one in Wolverhampton.
  15. This is very true. The wider world struggles to name two bassists. At least most of BC could probably name ten.
  16. Who is this aimed at?
  17. Not on my list of "10 bassists you could name". Had to DDG him to find out he was in Blink-182.
  18. Build one. How about the BC 110T?
  19. I ask purely theoretically as I'm unlikely to ever go back to continental Europe (for one thing, it needs a passport) - if one were to return with one more bass than one departed with, would this still go in the portable instrument exemption? This includes the situation where the number of basses that one departed with is zero.
  20. That's just your opinion.
  21. I currently have a Cort Space, and previously have had a GB4 Custom (lovely, fabulous neck, but it was for a Marillion tribute which I got chucked out of) and a GB5 Custom (neck was rather thicker than I like, still a nice bass but I moved it on in exchange for a Sei Jazz and a negative amount of money). The Space was a bit odd as it has split magnet pickups (Bart MK1s) and one magnet appeared to have been put in the wrong way round, so each pickup solo was fine (what I did when I gave it a quick once-over) but two strings were out of phase when both pickups were used. Replaced the pickups and all is well.
  22. TBH I'd forgotten about the digs, they were a couple of pages back and it wasn't exactly a flame war - and a lot of off topic stuff was about Facebook Purity.
  23. I trust that that includes Coldplay and Nickelback.
