1. The songs sound stronger on the recorded album but they made a decent fist of it under the circumstances. Didn't bother with the interview, in fact I fast forwarded through most of the other acts after a minute or so of each song. You just get certain weeks like that on later, nature of the beast.
2. Another of the greats gone, sad bass day.
3. If you drop the odd duff note DO NOT STOP to have a think about it, most of the punters won't notice and they'll be looking at whoever's singing anyway. Keep it simple, keep in time and enjoy it.
4. This has been covered quite extensively in another thread the other week, ttp://basschat.co.uk/topic/246808-great-little-video-sorry-if-its-been-on-before/page__p__2573706__hl__sound%20engineer__fromsearch__1#entry2573706
5. Not really, we may have 'band evenings' a couple of times a year but generally I keep a social circle which is separate from the band members just as I keep it separate from work collegues. That way I get to talk about stuff removed from both the band and work when I go out with mates. Works for me.
6. The band I'm in at the moment is basically a front man and a revolving succession of people backing him. So the code is 'wear black' and the underlying message is 'stand at the back and don't take any of the audience's attention away from me' so it's an absolute piece of piss turning up for gigs, just different variants of black. Ho hum.
7.
I read in the paper today that Francis Rossi of Status Quo has no idea who Royal Blood are. Surprising!!
Not remotely surprising to me. If it wasn't for the novelty value of the bass player doing lots of stuff with pedals and thus getting column inches on here I wouldn't have a clue who they were either and I've still got some way to go before I'm Rossi's age.
8. Good to see you in action Ray, enjoyed it and might catch you again closer to home in future if I'm not treading the boards meself. I knew your dep drummer on Sat would suit most of the material you do, keep him in practice for this weekend with us
9. A few years back they turned up one Sunday afternoon to the jam session at the Greyhound in Beeston, don't think they were known over here at all then. They subsequently did a few full gigs there but it was usually on dates I was gigging myself so only saw them at the jam, solid tight blues band. I saw Cropper with The Animals downstairs in Rock City a couple of years ago, recall the bass player's amp blew up halfway through the first set.
10. Now down to 4, only 3 of which I'd really use in anger. US Jazz S1 (2003) US P (50th anniv ltd edition, 2001) Ric 4003 (2000) some cheapo Aria semi acoustic, moslty decorative these days.
11. [sup]Lucky escape if you ask me... [/sup] Only joking, I accept Mr King for the bass god he undoubtely is. I once went to New Orleans in the 90's predominantly to see Deep Purple play 2 House of Blues shows. And we got backstage passes.
12. Go and see them tomorrow night and I'll dep for you in Brum
13.
I'm going to throw Disco 2000 by Pulp in there.
Common people is worse. Both in our set list
14. I don't think I'd ever last 17 years in the same band even if it was music I enjoyed doing. Now I'm too old to even contemplate it! Have a good break from it Pete, get out and do other stuff, play stuff you might not have otherwise done. Drop in at a few jam sessions, do some networking. Maybe pick up the odd dep gig. They will realise by Feb that they can't find anyone else that plays the lines quite like you do anyway.
15.
Goodness. I would never mention The Eagles in the same sentence as the entirely dreadful Coldplay. Meisner and Schmitt wrote some great lines.
Beat me to it.
16. If you're providing all the gear then the minimum the organisers should give you is power of veto on the night to go on when you want to and if another band ends up missing out or on the graveyard shift then tough, point out to them that if they bring all the gear next time and spend 80% of the night standing round then they will have that privelege.
17. You do tend to learn to read people but you can always get caught out. Years ago when I'd only recently bought my ric we did a birthday gig for someone and the kid who was in the support band wandered over to my bass and kind of looked at me with an imploring 'can I?' look but he'd got his own bass and I still hadn't insured the ric so I had to politely turn him down. I have let others use my stuff (including the ric) at jam sessions with no harm done, but by then I had time to assess the potential borrowers who were regulars.
18. Not gigging this weekend so I might get down for this if I get away from work in decent time.
19. he's gone all Scott Walker on us...
20.
I think I remember recently seeing a "climbing trolley" in Lidl's.
Yeah you can buy ones that do proper stairs but the design usually has to incorporate a 3 wheel arrangement on each side mounted in a triangle and that makes them much bulkier to store in the car. I prefer this sort of design: http://www.qvsdirect.com/einhell-blue-hand-truck?utm_source=google&utm_medium=googleshopping&utm_campaign=googlebase&gclid=CJvv_7eDqsECFY_ItAod9AoAjA They still collapse down to a reasonably small size.
21. +1. We occasionally get bought a round by the venue but it's not part of the agreement. Usually we buy our own. I feel if they are paying us to play it's only polite to have at least one on the site.
22.
Main band come one and you guessed it, the bass players Trace elliot does what trace elliots do best. Converts its self in to a smoke machine.
Odd, my experience of TE gear over the last 20 years or so has been the exact opposite. Very durable indeed. Maybe I've just been lucky.
23. And then you get those wtf moments like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XsYuHbXZUk
24. I think mostly I just hate kids, the talent part doesn't really enter into it.
25. Been using a (slightly more robust design) trolley for years. Original one finally gave up after 10 years earlier this year so I replaced it with a similar design. I also picked up another bigger flat bed folding one from Lidl which I also use on occasion but it's not so good up curbs as the sack trolley.
