1. I still have the white tape I put on 2 of the pedals on my PK-5's so I would always know at least where D and G were In truth part of the reason they stayed there was they all became virtually invisible at one gig when I had to put them on a brown carpet...
2. Although by no means the best singer in the world I have to say our guy is pretty consistent at least. Even when we have a fairly heavy schedule over December he's usually OK. Been doing it 8 years at least so iguess he's found out what he can push and what he can't through experience. He doesn't 'project' that much, PA doing all the work (doesn't use monitors) so maybe that actually helps sometimes?
3.
I bet you had that moment I guess a lot of us have had where you go "Really? You guys can't hear how good this song is and you don't want to do it?". I think it might be quite intimidating to some guitarists without the requisite chops though. You really would want to do it without more than one guitarist and some keys either. Were they factors in your bands declining?
Mainly lack of keyboards though I think with 2 decent guitarists a recognisable version would be feasible without piano, they don't have to be carbon copies of the original. I might see if I can persuade some of the guys at a jam night I occasionally attend to give it a whirl, at least there's usually a keyboard set up in the corner.
4. I've wanted to do 'Stay with me' in at least two bands I've been in but it's always fallen on deaf ears.
5. Never used one for a regular gigging band. I've had sheets of chords thrust at me for open mic gigs but i usually put those on top of my bass rig and consult them as and when. I think it looks a bit naff for a regular pop/rock/functions band. Even if you are there as the 'musical jukebox' (which my current band borders on) it doesn't mean you can't engage with the crowd to some extent and I think we do, none of us use stands. I'm sure I'd make just as many mistakes if I was trying to read it off a sheet, maybe just different ones. I was in a classic rock covers band once and we changed singers halfway through my tenure. The replacement insisted on bringing a big laminated book of lyrics with him 'just in case' and then spent half a song on one knee checking the lyrics. We split up within a year.
6.
All the bass being lost in an overly predominant kick drum is the bane of many gigs. I once posted a complaint about this on the Thunder website (Chris Childs is one of my fave players) they were not receptive to my gripe and got very defensive.
Saw Chris playing with Tyketto recently (admittedly in a small venue) and they didn't overdo Michael Clayton's drum sound so you could hear Chris's playing just fine. So it can be done in the right room with the right engineer.
7. I had to laugh when Gilmour was interviewed on Later, Jools asked him if there was ever likely to be another Floyd album and he said 'Well there's only two of us left now' as though Waters had gone the same way as Wright... Anyway, here he is getting all artsy on his Ric http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU0zaHHM3xw
8.
As posted several times, it's not the other instruments making it an inaudible mush it's the echo from the bass itself.
So why is it when I go to the arena gigs in those parts of the show where the bass/floor toms drop out of the mix I can hear the bass OK but when they start up again it disappears?
9. Or try it with a Gramma pad?
10. I have a 3-way Rockstand from Thomann, about £25 at the time but they have gone up slightly, think they are about £27 inc postage now. The thing is sturdily built but because you have to lean the bass back at an angle to be really comfortable it is sitting firmly the neck then ends up jutting out a fair way out the back (obviously not such an issue with guitars) so they can't sit snugly up against a wall and i found the front was coming too far out into the room and being intrusive. It's not holding any basses at all at the moment, just dumped in the spare room taking up space. I have downsized my basses though so it's not really needed at present.
11. Probably had enough interesting experiences to fill two lifetimes but RIP all the same.
12.
Maybe Daltrey's car breaks down outside the Barge n Barrel, Tipton on the second Tuesday in the month. He comes in to get a drink while he's waiting for the RAC, and guess what.. we're playing! So up he gets for a bit of a jam. It could happen!!
Something like this happened at a blues jam night in Nottm a year or two back (I wasn't there, the landlord told me about it). A band was on at Rock City but arrived in town a day or two early, so on the night before the gig they dropped in at this little place for a jam. The band contained ex memebrs of Thin Lizzy, The Almighty and INXS. People were coming in and doing a double-take as Scott Gorham was stood on stage jamming some blues...
13. Done it both ways, direct into aux phonos and by splitting into 1/4inch jacks as Happy Jack suggested, didn't find any issues with it but I was playing from an iPod classic rather than a phone. We've used it to give background music during our breaks at weddings, not had a problem yet. Those older iPods do give out a pretty beefy signal though.
14. Well until other bands then start doing those songs you've just 'educated' them with
15. For someone with no OT at all I still think the comp I posted before is a great start point; http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00BQ3K172/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new 23 tracks for less than £7, delivered from UK?
16. Dakota Sex On Fire Mr Brightside Jumping Jack Flash You Really Got Me I'm losing the will to live already so I'll stop there. I'm sure Dakota and Sex On Fire will slug it out for top spot. Again.
17.
Of all the blues purchases I've made (which is a very silly number, BTW), the best value I ever got was from the 3-volume "Coming Home To The Blues" set - here's Vol.1: http://www.amazon.co...me+to+the+blues If you can't find at least a dozen change-of-musical-direction tracks across those three CDs, you're just not trying.
I missed this originally, concur with Jack and you can get all three vols s/h in good condition through Amazon for less than £3 delivered total. You can also pick up loads of blues compilations/box sets very cheaply in places like Fopp but there's a lot of overlap in some of them and you soon start duplicating tracks if you're not careful.
18. I'd heard one or two things by them and then was lucky enough to find the entire 'cereal' box set which had been transferred to 6 CD's in a scruffy s/h record shop very cheap. Picked up a few things on and off through the years, theres a decent looking introductory CD here which I don't have but the track listing seems OK; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Introducing-Ozric-Tentacles/dp/B00BQ3K172/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1417520125&sr=8-3&keywords=ozric+tentacles I have a double CD 'best of' but that is starting to look a bit pricey, used to be available very cheaply.
19.
Is it good for metal?
Yes it'll bring your cutlery up a treat
20. It would probably make me not take up an offer if the audition was with a poor drummer and I got the job. If it was an established band I was already in and a new drummer was forced on me who wasn't up to it then yes I might well consider dropping out. Sometimes you don't appreciate how good the guy you are working with is until you do a few open mic/jam nights and have to play with all sorts, many of which are gigging regularly themselves so not novices.
21. To be fair it was a song they don't normally do and were purely busking it.
22. As a wedding band you are there for the couple and their guests. If they are fans and want Daltrey to do a number and he's happy doing it then you do it. I'd be happy doing anything within reason that makes it a special day for the people paying my wages.
23. There's a great Boz Scaggs 2-CD anthology that came out in 1997 with a load of good stuff on it including the track in the OP, had it for several years.
24. Much as above, but for your own sanity listen to as many different styles as you can and try to make a cohesive set from a good mix of approaches. With the best will in the world some of those classic players ploughed a musically narrow furrow, it's the nature of the beast. Some blues covers bands get hung up on a particular artist or sub-genre (like Chicago blues) and end up with a terribly samey set. A good mix of appropriate patterns (eg not all 12 bar) and some non-standard time sigs can freshen things up no end.
25. Always thought the ELO vs of Roll Over Beethoven pisses all over Chuck's original but the purists would probably disagree
