Gillan could scan over about 4 octaves at his peak, though there have been reports that he occasionally knocked out a note in a sceam that came from the next one up again (5th).

Looks like I'm against the tide but I actually prefer the design of the original badge. I certainly won't be rushing out to swap the one on my recently acquired rumble 100. It's just a badge. The plate on my Trace combo is scratched to hell but I'm not replacing that either.

And it's a three year old story No idea what the final outcome was, if money actually changed hands or he just took down the site.
Nova - Vimana. It is on YouTube but not available as anything but vinyl. Also Peter Sprague's Napali Coast.
That's on mp3va as well : http://www.mp3va.com/nova-vimana-r205699 However listening to the preview it's clearly been extracted from vinyl rather than original tapes as you can here all the crackles

Someone bought me one of those cloth covered Fender leads with a right angled jack a few years ago and I must say I rather like it, it coils away very neatly even in my neanderthal hands. It also matches the flight case my Precision came in, as if that really matters

Hawkwind last night (yes, they still exist against all the odds). Not a bad gig but not great either. Their current bass player sounds quite handy, no idea who he is though.

I've posted this before but it was this Columbus jazz that the bass player in the band I was in at school (lots of rehearsing jams but no gigs while I was in it) had modded with DiMarzio P pickups. The bridge jazz pu had died anyway. The neck became almost unplayable and in the end i used it as a project to 'see how stuff worked' and replaced everything (mighty mite neck, tuners, badass bridge, authentic Fender pu's, scratchplate to cover the modding hole except it never matched up to the control plate because the body isn't an exact fender copy shape!) then gave it to my niece who was learning to play on some dreadful Encore rubbish. No idea where it is now, niece quit playing and I'm in no rush to have it back though the badass bridge could be worth rescuing.

From what I read Fender never successfully sued any of those japanese copyists of the 80's, the whole 'lawsuit' badge is a bit of a misnomer.

Another top player showing us why bass isn't really a solo instrument.

I think it's about time Jon put pen to paper (or its electronic equivalent) and started that 'Japcrap - The Definitive Guide' coffee table tome.

Ive just hacked off my ears with a rusty bread knife.

Admirably putting their own spin on it and refusing to slavishly reproduce the original. Even going that extra mile and giving the bass player a completely different song to learn from the other two players. Genius. -
It could be what happens when relatives over estimate the value of the estate, especially when it's split 19 ways and "Rich Uncle Randy's" estate doesn't amount to so much. Not that I've researched this guy at all.
I don't think he made vast amounts. Spirit were reasonably well known in the late 60's /early 70's on the US west coast scene but otherwise fairly anonymous. They had a bit of a resurgence in UK doing the college circuit in the early 80's and California's 'Restless' solo album was reasonably well received by the rock fraternity around that time. He'd moved to Hawaii when he drowned saving his son who had got into difficulties swimming in the sea. He seemed a pretty cool chilled out guy but he had mentioned the similarity between Taurus and STH in interviews before.
there was a news item on Radio 5 this morning about plagiarism, Led Zep are being sued over Stairway, I never realised the opening riff to In the City and Holidays in the Sun were the same, but when does inspiration become plagiarism? Paul Weller is a past master at ripping off intros but I don't know whether he's ever been sued, is it not enough just to copy a part of another song?
The Changing Man / 10538 Overture thing is just staggering.

Could also be a management company looking to make some extra money. I don't think Randy California (drowned in 1997) owned the rights completely to Taurus and 50% is owned by someone else, maybe a publishing company? The guy who has brought the lawsuit is involved with California's estate so maybe his relatives are looking to get in on it too.

Well done, they can be very cliquey set ups and quite intimidating so a thumbs up for having a go. It's been said before on here but if your goal is to get into playing in a band situation you can learn more at one of these things than a week of noodling around with tabs in front of your PC. First thing you usually learn is that there is a wide range in quality of drummers that turn up to them

Quit my band ,best decision I've made in years
KevB replied to kevvo66's topic in General Discussion
Yep, even though I knew my opportunities wouldn't be great as an over 50 I walked from last 2 bands as it just wasn't matching my expectations any more. Hope someting comes up you can get your teeth into soon. -
End of the day it doesn't matter what the hell the EQ settings look like, it's what the sound that is coming through in a live gigging situation is like that matters. If you are getting compliments about the sound from your audience then it's worked, job done. With my TE combo I have elements of the 7 band EQ going on but also use the preshape and the inbuilt compression but also have a Hartke bassattack pedal in front of all that as well. Some of it may well be cancelling each other out but it seems a bit pointless fiddling about even more just to prove that to myself, the final product is a sound that works for the bands I've been playing in and I know it well enough to know what to tweak if required in certain live situations.

What's the best practice amp for my requirements?
KevB replied to highwayman's topic in Amps and Cabs
Having done a bit of reading around and also found out that a local music shop was doing them as cheap as Tomann etc I opted to pick up a Fender rumble at the weekend. My little 25W practice amp is beginning to occasionally cut out (15 yrs old, doesn't really owe me anything) so was looking to replace that initially. Then I thought about a lightweight alternative and the fact the basis of my gigging rig must be knocking on 20yrs old. I have absolutely no back up so I tried out the rumble 40 and 100. In the end I opted for the 100 as I'm sure this will be loud enough as an emergency backline if my Trace combo ever needs attention. I have a dep gig on Apr 29th so I'm looking to gig the runmble as a trial, it feels half the weight of my Trace combo and I can get some usable tones from it even without the bassattack pedal I normally use at gigs. It's light and compact enough so it can sit on the set of drawers I have in my study/practice room where the little Marshall B25 was, its taking up no extra space and light enough to carry up and down stairs for the occasional dep outing. Sensibly priced too. -
Brilliant gig last night at Nottingham arena. Almost a spiritual experience as this band (well, Jeff anyway) have been a backdrop to most of my formative years listening to music. Considering how many instruments and vocal mics the sound engineers had to contend with the mix was first rate, as good as I've ver heard it in that venue. Won't put any set spoilers in as this was only the second night of the tour and I know there are others here who have tickets for upcoming shows. You won't be disappointed on last night's showing.

Counting down to Jeff Lynne tomorrow night

Weren't El Greco's cheap knock offs of Rickenbacker paintings?
-
Let's be honest if it's a 'regular' shape (P or jazz typically) then 90% of audience at least can't tell if it's a £2K or £250 bass.

Bored in the car: tone OR playability - you can only choose one...
KevB replied to Moos3h's topic in General Discussion
One man's perfect tone is another man's grating noise but a bass that's a pig to play is always going to be a problem so I'd go for playability. -
Folks play the instrument they want irrespective, if they can afford it.There is a guy who comes along to the (mainly blues based) jam sessions I sometimes go to and plays a 6 string bass, think he has a 7 as well. His main gigging band is blues rock too. I've chatted to him about it and he says he'd struggle with anything else now he's so used to playing in that format where he doesn't have to go up and down the fretboard so much. Each to there own, no set rules.
