1. There was a thread a wee while ago from a guy who was thinking of buying an unlined fretless electric. He was afraid of playing without lines to guide him. I think it is the fear that can hold us back. If you just dive in and give it a go you'll either sink or swim. As you play fretless electric already you're more likely to swim. Just go for it.
2. Is that a crack behind the nut?
3.
I go with a 51 P At the very end you can see a shot, it doesn't have the big Pickguard of the 70's telebass.
Having looked at some other pics I think you are probably right.
4. I think in the 70s that would have been a Telecaster bass. By that time the P bass we know today was well established and the Telecaster bass would have been a way to satisfy those who wanted the original design of the Precision.
5. It's already over my limit so I'm out.
6. I'd love one of these but it's the dreaded pick up only. Probably just as well, don't need any more basses.
7. Now you are the kind of teacher everyone should have, Jake. Willing to try something new when it comes along. That's what keeps techniques moving forward.
8.
So we're all agreed! Hahaha! Shall I put the kettle on?! Dan
I don't think I can add any more to what has been said as it all slots in with how I feel about music. I did come across this clip of Ed Friedland doing a clinic. Loved his comment on slap a short way into it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUy-9v5dQkA
9. Usual story, too busy playing it to take photos.
10. I had a go at the pivoting method last night and, for me, found it much easier to find the notes moving up the neck. I'd be interested to hear other's comments on Clarky's query as well.
11. Regarding the raising/lowering of the elbow. I think raising the elbow puts a lot of strain on the shoulder, certainly does with mine. The important thing is to make sure your wrist is as straight as possible. This avoids injury from too much tension in tendons and muscles. Watch some clips of good players and see how they do it. Like the Simadl/Rabbath approaches, try a number of different angles and find what suits you. We are all built differently so it's up to you to find what suits you. A good teacher will work with you in this way. A teacher who is dogmatic about 'the' way to do it is perhaps not the best teacher, not just in bass playing but anything in life. Always try as many different approaches as you can find and go with the one that feels best for you.
12. ..and it looks like???
13.
sorry bassbuss - not bump -
None taken.
14. I had to look to see if mine was still in the room, identical. What's the serial number? Has to have one of the best necks I've ever played. Lovely P bass sound too. I might be wrong but I think the body was made from Alder. Have a bump anyway.
15.
I hope and pray that I can one day play well enough to justifyhaving a work of art like that in my possession.......
Having a bass like that will help you play a lot better. No, honestly it will.
16. The FV-50h can be used with anything. It can have instruments plugged straight into it unlike the FV-50L which can only be used after an effects chain, ie you cannot plug instruments straight into it. So no it won't affect the sound. Here's a couple of links that explain things. FV-50H http://www.dv247.com/studio-equipment/roland-fv50h-high-impedance-volume-pedal--6618 FV50L http://www.dv247.com/keyboards-and-midi/roland-fv50l-low-impedance-volume-pedal--6619

COWPOKE!

There's no high end or low end when it comes to porn, just good old filth and that's a fine looking bass. The scratchplate really sets it off nicely.
18. I did this a while ago. All the suggestions above but I also rolled up two long lengths of cardboard the full length of the neck. Wrap some card around the neck and then tape these roles of cardboard to either side of the neck. All I know is the bass arrived in one piece. Just gives a bit of extra strength to the neck and some more peace of mind to you.
19. Not cheap but you can buy Band in a Box for the computer. Just type in the chord changes, select a style of your choice, press play and you have a whole arrangement that you can switch individual instruments in and out of. http://www.pgmusic.com/
20. Glad you fancy headless. Straight string pull, no winding around tuning posts. That said Rob's basses are just as good either way. I have both but would choose headless. As far as neck-thru or bolt-on are concerned; neck-thru as stated earlier will give you a more sparkly tone, slightly more top end. Bolt-on will give a slightly warmer tone. The bolt-on is no less of a bass than a neck-thru except neck-thrus cost a lot more. Neck=thrus come with a standard polyurithane finnish while bolt-ons have a natural satin finnish. Either can be selected as a custom order. However, a bolt-on with polyurethane finnish will cost much the same as a neck-thru. I chose bolt-on for my fretless S2. Just a beautiful, full warm tone with Flats on it. Standard fingerboard is phenolic but you can ask for a wooden board to be fitted. Phenolic will give you a nice bright clear tone, what Status is known for. Rob now does pickups that can have switches to engage single coils. That gives you even more choice for tone. Confused. Keep going and you might just be.
21. If it was built in Czechoslovakia then it could well be a decent bass. The eastern European basses have quite a good rep. NS Design build most of their basses in the Czech Republic. I'd go with the idea of having a luthier look at it.
22. Try posting some pics and that would give us all a better idea. Edit: Ah, Jamie beat me to it.
