1. I'd forgotten about these. Sounds like it would be just the thing to stop my bass being so boomy in some rooms.
2. You got that for £150 That's an absolute beauty. You lucky, lucky man.
3. The one on the left looks like it might be a chorus. http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/columbus/chr5
4.
Thanks BassBus. i guess your right. i'll really try this year to practice and make it regular. I think maybe i'm going through a faze of self criticism... I have some good gear and that does make me feel a little worried at gig's. i guess i think that maybe other bassists or band people may be expecting me to be much more advanced than i am...
There's nothing wrong with self-criticism, just means you want to improve what you do. Nowt wrong with that. Just be careful you don't take it too far. Perfectionism is actually quite a negative trait. You spend so much time looking for the negative that you can loose sight of the positive. So you end up having a bad time all the time. We all make mistakes. Allow them to happen. Learn from them and move on.
5. I'll bet you are actually a better learner than you think you are. You talk about switching between 4 and 5 strings and drop D tuning. That all had to be learnt and you've done it. There is a question that is asked by some people; How do you get to the Albert Hall? Practice, practice, practice. Unfortunaely there is no easy way round it. The French call it repetition and that's all it takes. Keep practicing the same thing over and over and eventually it sinks in without you knowing it. Don't force it. So I say keep playing both. Find what suits the music you are playing. If that turns out to be fivers then that's what is needed.
6. With that kind of money you are best to start in the For Sale section of this forum. Lots of choice and instruments that are at very good prices. If you're unsure about buying unseen just check for any feedback the seller might have in the Feedback section. I've had nothing but good results buying from BC but as always do the checks first.
7. How about keeping this thread on topic. Any more complaints about GB basses why not take them here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/17506-the-gb-porn-thread/page__hl__gb The Oracle has spoken on Statii.com http://www.statii.com/forum/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=4771&pid=45532#post_45532
8. Now I really don't like you, Luc. In ever such a nice way of course. One of the most beautiful pieces of wood Rob has ever used. Enjoy the playing.
9.
OK posting mine here too: https://www.facebook...=1&l=d2b1575e92
What was the EUB that Jon Thorne was playing? The new Godin basses look very interesting.
10. And Django himself only fretted with two fingers. He couldn't do it any other way. Did that affect his ability? No. Probably contributed to his sound. 'The book' is only written by one person but there are countless millions of musicians. Just sometimes a different style of playing comes from someone else's 'sloppy' technique. Of course it is always advisable to work with a 'good' technique but there is no need to be too anal about it. Just enjoy the playing.
11. Thanks for posting these. Only thing lacking is the noise.
12. Weather Report's Heavy Weather is always a good place to start. His first solo album, Jaco Pastorius was the one that started it all. Also have a look at the documentary about him in four parts on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTcbTg8O548
13. At about £1200 new I'd just rip his hand off. That is unless it has no neck, or pickups or electronics or...
14.
+1,000,000 Animals by far my fav too.
Glad that makes 3 of us.
15. I always think it's a shame no-one rates Animals. Was the first time I heard Floyd. Alan Freeman playing it on his Saturday Rock Show. Been my favourite since. Never been a huge fan of The Wall. Has it's moments but only about four of them. Just a great band though and I'll always be sorry I never saw them live. Still have DVDs though, next best thing.
16. These wooden necked Status basses have to be some of the most value for money basses out there. Looks like a great job.
17. Hi Jim, I'm up the road in Berwick. Scroll down the home page till you find the 'Basschat Market Place' section. Click on 'For Sale: Basses'. Simply start a new thread from there. Give the price you are looking for plus any postage cost. If you want payment by paypal then state that and who will pay the fees. Always post photos when you start the thread. Put in any other relevant info as well. You'll see a button at the top of your new thread asking for a donation. You might want to think about giving a donation to Basschat if you sell the bass through here. It's that simple. Sorry I'm not in the market for a new bass right now.
18. The worst bit I had to deal with in my early days playing jazz, was the cold sweat that went through me when the band leader gave me the nod to say "you're next".
19.
Just going by personal experience. My first fretless was set as you say and caused me grief. I put a little more relief into it and it plays sweet as anything.
As always this comes down to personal taste as well, which always has to be factored in.
20.
Pretty much the same. You will need to give the neck some extra relief but otherwise it's the same. (IMHO)
I wouldn't agree with this. Any significant relief will cause the string to 'choke' at points on the neck.
21. I should say so. You want to have the neck as straight as you can get it. That helps with the 'mwah'. The nut also needs to be cut very low. The action wants to be about 0.5 or 0.6mm at the first 'fret'. Any higher and it's going to be hard to play a note at that end of the neck. The instrument can be intonated in much the same way as a fretted. The way I was shown was to take an allen key and toch the string over the 12th 'fret'. Play the harmonic through a tuner and tune the string there. Then fret it with the allen key. Adjust the saddle back and forth acordingly. That should give you give you a good playing action.
22. How about this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWLOxRSll5Q&feature=g-vrec&context=G2365a59RVAAAAAAAACA Through some effects it might give you what you want.
23. From what you say in your post you are already starting to develop a soloing style. If you can vary and adapt then keep working on that. Each time you play over a chord progression try something a little different. The earliest jazz soloists simply varied the tune as a solo. It takes time but the more you practice the more you'll start to get it. Scott Devine has a lot of good videos. Looking forward to his Gary Willis tutorials.
24.
u mean i need another 18 inch speaker....sweet!!! my guitarests would love that they already complain bout my sonic boom!!
No. It's not about the size of the speaker. It's about ohms. The ohms are the pipe not the speaker. Find out the ohm rating of the speaker and you might be getting somewhere. Sounds like you might be putting too many ohms into your speaker. Why not try someone else's 8 ohm amp through your speaker and see what happens.
25. Yeh, what ohm rating does the speaker have and what ohm rating on the amp. You can't fit a pint in a half pint pot and all that. The best description of ohm's law I read talked of it as two hose pipes. If you are trying to squeeze water through a 1cm pipe it can only flow as quickly as that pipe can take it. If you then attach another 1cm pipe along side it you have twice the flow rate. Therefore, an amp that is rated 500w at 8 ohms can only push about 300w of power through to an 8 ohm speaker. If you connect a second 8 ohm speaker you reduce the resistance to 4 ohms and are able to use the full 500w. Is your amp around 4 ohms? And is it trying to go into an 8 ohm speaker?
