It's so bad that sounds like distortion or is that in there too. Here's another one. How to ruin a good Status bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz7vEsslqX4&feature=related

Ah, at last my son, the light you have seen. Nowt wrong with folk either. I play Lady be good with jazzers and folkers.

It's one of these things that comes down to personal taste. I like the sound of string on wood so I would go for the uncoated board. I play a defretted Tokai Jazz with rosewood board and halfwounds. Gives me exactly the sound I want. Loads of mwah and lots of singing. I also have a Status S2 fretless with a phenolic board and that has a completely different sound. Much brighter and clearer. I often use flats on that which gives a lovely mellow tone. I find rounds on a fretless just too bright. So personal taste. I'd try different strings on the open wood board before you coat it.

Dead spots are a fact on guitars, even those with graphite necks. My Status S2 fretless has a dead spot on the open D. Rob Green states quite clearly that even graphite necks have dead spots. You might exchange the bass for another with a dead spot in another place. Neck pocket is another issue. With all the computer controlled cutting they have in factories these days I can't understand that one.
yeah I love the necks. Dialemma i have is would i play it enough to justify having? I have a P bass and this is the same placement. hmmm
I'm not a big fan of the P bass sound but just watching Django Django on Later and that guy's P sounded great. Just right for that music anyway.

I know I'm biased, but I don't think you can go wrong with any Status bass. The wooden necked Status basses from the 90s are such good value as they are not in as much demand as graphite necks. Haven't played a Shark but I do have a wooden necked Electro and that is just exquisite.

I think he needs to look at his business model. If he spends pennies on shipping he will get pennies of a service. At least you are getting your money back. And yes DB is an expensive business. Just wait till you need to change strings.

That's looking particularly good. The finish just sets it off beautifully. Well done.

Thanks for posting that. I'm not that up on theory but that explains things very clearly.
Hey, thanks for the suggestion, but that's the main theme. I'm trying to work out a different song
When will I learn to read the whole post. Second time I've done that in the last week. Doh!

It's called 'Drag Racer' originally recorded by the Doug Wood Band.

I have a friend who bought a Gibson acoustic from the US. Arrived no problem. Cost £1K but the store marked it for customs at £500. Not sure that's the best thing to do though. If anything happens in transit you could loose a lot of money.
Though have found out they have a new editor in Joel McIver (writer of many cracking rock biographies)!
That'll be the third editor in the last twelve months. That might indicate problems.
Yes..it is beginning to nag at me... I don't want to leave, or have to start again, but I feel this is the start of a slippery slope and its a question of how I try and bury that feeling...or will I be able I do know I know the right people and think I can get the players together ...but with new people comes new 'baggage'
Burying feelings will never work. I see this again and again with my counselling clients. That's why people come to see me. They have buried feelings. But they have never gone away and end up becoming stuck in life. How is burying your feelings going to help your playing with this band? You don't want to leave but you have other musicians who you can play with. You are concerned about where your current band is going in your mind. Then you are concerned about new "baggage" with new musicians. You see a slippery slope with the current band. I get the feeling your mind is going one way.

You have your right to put your view forward, goes without saying. But at the end of the day what the whole band decides is more important. In our band, whenever any one member has tried to push the band in a direction they would like it to go they have always come off worst. Usually by leaving or being chucked out. Our band has always been bigger than any one member. At the end of the day if the band is to survive everything has to be a collective decision. Sometimes your views will be accepted, sometimes not. Others might come here and say I'm talking tripe. I'll just have to accept that. That is what makes this such a useful forum.

Haven't listened to them for a long time. This might just make me dig out the LPs again. I think it was 1979 or 80 I saw them at Glasgow Apollo. Andy Ward played just about the best drum solo I have ever heard. Great band.

Shipping Guitar in hard case to Normandy: best method..?
BassBus replied to Dad3353's topic in General Discussion
If you provide weight and dimensions from your own scales allow a little extra when getting a quote. I sent a bass to Germany last year. I dropped it into the UPS depot in Edinburgh where it was examined and weight and dimensions taken. To my surprise I received an invoice to cover the cost of extra weight. It was soon cleared up when they were told they had weighed it in their depot. Just to be aware of though if you are having it picked up by a courier. -
This might help with choosing new DB strings. http://www.hervejeanne.de/saitenmatrix.php

...and when I go back to school tomorrow I'm going to learn to read.

Certainly it's a lot less than my Shadow cost me. But how can you rate something as good value that hasn't arrived for three months. Be interesting to see how this turns out.
No, but more than flats.
I would argue with this, strongly. Halfwounds sing like nothing else on my basses. I don't get the rounds on fretless thing. They are rough to the touch with lots of finger noise and, as experienced, damage the fingerboard. Halfwounds are smooth to the touch with much less finger noise and loads of mwah. It all depends on the setup and the way you play the bass. If you dig in you'll loose all the voicing and it ends up just sounding like a fretted bass with dull strings. Play more gently and the sound swells after you pluck the note. Add into that some easy side to side rolling of the left hand finger and you get the most beautiful vibrato. Pulling the string across the fingerboard looses all that sensitivity. Try halfwounds before you go any further. Get them from the Status Graphite site. Just about the best value strings out there.
