That looks rather special. Can't wait to hear some sounds clips!

I switched my audio recording over to my Windows 7 64bit machine for better performance. Had a few problems with the MacBook Pro. I think an audition of a 2i2 is in order

I've never liked Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. They always sounds clangy, overly bright and cheap. There seems to be no warmth in them at all. I guess that suits some but not me.
on the basis that I could record everything and anything , at mic level and line level ( and with a 48v phantom supply) , and all with predictable levels both on output and input
Hmm, I'm getting all that now with my guitar rig interface. I've heard the pre-amps on the focusrites are great but it's hard to tell if it's worth upgrading my interface just for the better pre-amps. I think the £120 may be better spent elsewhere or I'll have to try one out so I know for sure

They have exactly the same sound, feel and lifespan as GHS Bass Boomers still (I have both on a few basses). The only difference I can find is that GHS have red wraps and the Overwaters have black wraps which match my basses better... I may just ask the guys from Overwater.
I know that GHS make Overwater's strings for them , ( as well as many other companies strings , besides), so maybe they are essentially the same string after all .
I've just gotten a pack of Overwater string today and they have Made in UK on them if that helps place the factory they're made in. Heh, kinda does place it really, it's in the UK! I meant, if GHS have a factory in the UK that would corroborate.
GHS bass boomers: lifeless and anonymous. They would be good for spies I guess: nobody will notice you
I actually really like these. I mainly use Overwater lights now which I swear are the same strings as they sound similar and have the same drop-off rate of brightness. I find on my basses they have an overly sharp zing that dies off quickly and then settle in the sweet post (for me) for a long time before falling off dead. I don't like over-zingy strings though so maybe what you don't like about them is what I love about them! How do the Fenders compare against them? Are they brighter for longer? Do they give you more cutting mids? I've never tried them and at least one of my basses needs restringing soon...

I'm almost sold would you say the sound quality was a big improvement over the zooms? That's the only issue I face at the moment.

Hmm, I've got my guitar rig interface but get a lovely tone from my Zoom when it's plugged into my monitor speakers. When I record through it it sounds awful so I may be doing something wrong. It sounds the same as through my guitar rig interface. I wonder if the signal is going in too hot (it's not clipping the inputs though). I'm pretty sure I didn't explain any of that right! I might do some sample recordings so you can hear what I mean.

Which zoom pedal were you using? I've got the B.9 but may get a focusrite if they're way better.

I've just been playing around with my Zoom B9 using it as an audio interface to record bass with. I'm getting a much better tone out of it than going through my Guitar Rig Session. I can dial in a little tube loveliness on the preamp too So I'm well pleased with that. It's a monster though, it's huge and heavy. I think you've all convinced me to buy myself a Zoom MS-60B for live use. Lozz has sold me on the idea of using one as a preamp/EQ for going into a PA (I know you use a B3 but I'm hoping for a similar effect.)
I can't help you with tabs or tutorials but your not limited to the roots. Do you know the chords? Try adding fifths and thirds and any of the notes of the relative scales. You will find it much more rewarding if you come up with your own lines. It takes time but the more you do it the easier it becomes.
+1 to this. You needn't be intimidated by doing this, it's fairly simple once you've grasped the basics. If this is the video I'm thinking of, this may help (it talks about shapes on the fretboard than represent the notes in a chord rather than bamboozle you with too much theory in one go): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJNq4GVoy5I

If you don't like it I'm sure you know someone who could take it off your hands...
I never understood why anyone would use passive single coils. They're weaker and noisier. Now, I understand passives sound more natural and woodsy and single coils have a sweetness to them that humbuckers do not.
This.
Well, I suppose they sound like a Fender and are based on Fender design. They aren't an original design, even if the body is slightly different.
You've pretty much described all electric basses...

I've got a classic J and a contemporary J and yeah, they're really good basses for the money. They're really good basses full stop actually. Great sound and awesome playability. My only real gripe is that they're both just over 10 lbs each so they're not light (hence my Yamaha TRBX purchase). Great looks too, a nice mix of classic J bass styling but with a nice twist. If it wasn't for the weight I'd have bought a second classic J from here as the backup to my main classic J.

What to do when you got mardy neighbours?

I live in the ground floor flat of a victorian terrace. It's a converted house and the landlord owned the place and converted it into flats. There is absolutely no sound-proofing between my flat and the upstairs flat. It's just floorboard, a foot of air and my ceiling. I can hear every footstep like it's someone in my room and each footfall thuds and creaks. I can hear their normal talking quite loudly, as if they're in the next room with the door open. The problem I face is that they work night shifts. So they'll come in between 11.30pm and 2pm and stomp around for two hours keeping me awake. So anyway, after talking to several people, I contacted the council to see if he'd passed building regulations for sound control and it turns out he hadn't. So they're onto him and (hopefully, really really hopefully) he'll be forced to put some sound-proofing in. So my advice would be to contact your local building regulations officer (their contact details should be on your local council's website) and ask whether your flats have been converted and if so, if they meet the required building regs for sound/noise control. -
Every time I swap basses with someone to get an idea of the tone of their bass I always end up sounding like me and they always end up sounding like them. On a similar note, Faith No More's Billy Gould demonstrates how to not sound like him and how to sound like him by just playing different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unrYxF1p5K4

No problem running it on my PC, it's nice and modern (Win 7 64 bit), stable and quick. One of the advantages of recording on a gaming rig!

Is it this one? http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Squier-by-Fender-Vintage-Modified-77-Jazz-Bass-Amber/UBR If so, I played one of these and preferred to all of the Mexican Fenders and some of the USA ones. Sorry, I'm not helping.

I'm gonna resurrect this post as I'm thinking about this once more. I'm not getting great results with my Guitar Rig Session I/O box when recording bass. I always need to eq the hell out of the bass to bring back some top end zing or to just get it sounding like a decent bass sound. Would something like the Ashdown 12 band graphic eq DI box help? Glad you like it, I bought the TRBX 504 from Hamfist a short while ago and love it. The set up is spot on, as was the set up on the other 504 I played in the shop a few weeks prior. The strings are indeed D'Addarios - I emailed Yamaha to ask them 105-45 on the 4-string basses they say (although they feel more like 40-100 to me). The only thing I'm not 100% happy with is that the pickups don't give that single coil zing - obviously because they're humbuckers! So I'm losing a little high end zing and cut-through I think. Or I may just need to get used to it Great variation in sounds when you move the pickup pan even slightly off the centre spot. The centre spot gives a nice scooped sound - perfectly balanced in my opinion. I suspect your will be the same. Funny thing is that I'd never have picked up a Yammy but my guitarist (Pinball on here) tried one and said I should give it a go. I'm now a convert!
