1. I'm gonna resurrect this post as I'm thinking about this once more. I'm not getting great results with my Guitar Rig Session I/O box when recording bass. I always need to eq the hell out of the bass to bring back some top end zing or to just get it sounding like a decent bass sound. Would something like the Ashdown 12 band graphic eq DI box help? http://ashdownmusic.com/products/6/Pedals/9/Ashdown-Pedals/69/12-Band-Graphic-DI-/
 2. Glad you like it, I bought the TRBX 504 from Hamfist a short while ago and love it. The set up is spot on, as was the set up on the other 504 I played in the shop a few weeks prior. The strings are indeed D'Addarios - I emailed Yamaha to ask them 105-45 on the 4-string basses they say (although they feel more like 40-100 to me). The only thing I'm not 100% happy with is that the pickups don't give that single coil zing - obviously because they're humbuckers! So I'm losing a little high end zing and cut-through I think. Or I may just need to get used to it Great variation in sounds when you move the pickup pan even slightly off the centre spot. The centre spot gives a nice scooped sound - perfectly balanced in my opinion. I suspect your will be the same. Funny thing is that I'd never have picked up a Yammy but my guitarist (Pinball on here) tried one and said I should give it a go. I'm now a convert!
 3.
I don't know whether Tiberius would be the type to rock out to Suck My Kiss, but if he did, it would be on one of these.
That's logic you just can't argue with. Buy it.
 4. Interesting how many people have picked up on this being a way to con people into paying to make her record for her, or for her to get session musicians on the cheap. I've supported a couple of Kickstarter projects, one for a remake of an X-com computer game (Xenonauts) where paying my $30 gave me beta access and the opportunity to have my thoughts and opinions on how the game should work heard by the developers. So the result was a game that I'd help to shape and make a reality. If I were to pay the £100 to contribute to this album, is this not the same as my contribution to Xenonauts? For me, it would be a nice exercise in making something creative happen that benefits from my creativity and my financial support. It would have nothing to do with an artist trying to pull a fast one.
 5.
One thing I have learnt from internet forums is just how surprising other people's idea of" beautiful "can be compared to my own ( superior) taste. I love vintage Fenders in sunburst, though I doubt I will ever buy another nowadays .
Totally agree that everyone's opinion's differ. For me, a vintage P bass in sunburst is the most vanilla/magnolia/boring looking bass ever. For me, in terms of looks it's like buying a tesco value bass.
 6. I applaud the creativity in the approach to funding an album and getting people involved in music. It's the lack of this sort of creativity that landed the music industry on its backfoot in the first place.
 7.
1) Setting up a new sub-forum for Basschat members' music. I was thinking of maybe calling it 'Members' Music', but I keep sniggering at the word 'member' - yeah, I've watched too much Beavis and Butthead - so how about we just call it 'Share Your Music'? If you've got a suggestion for the name then pipe up and let us know ASAP. We'll be setting up the new sub-forum any day now. We'll include a sticky explaining some basic rules (nothing major, just the usual sensible stuff about copyright and offensive material). We'll also include a 'polite suggestion' for anyone uploading to also comment on someone else's music. I've seen this work well on other forums so it's worth a try
Brilliant ideas all round, thanks to everyone working on the new recording forum! Do remember (and this is why I quoted the above) that there is a Basschat Soundcloud group where you can share you music to fellow Basschatters: https://soundcloud.com/groups/basschat
 8.
American Standard Precision. Get one and get a seat at the top table of bass ownership - at the head of the table where the King sits. From about £500 used to £1050 new - so money is indeed no object for most people. No better bass. Accept no imitations. Strap on. Rock.
Tried one. Was more impressed by a Squire Jazz. As for which bass I'd get if money were no object, I'd simply have to play as many as possible until something inside me says "that one".
 9. Glad there's some love for the red beauty Sounds like this by the way: https://soundcloud.com/mornats/mystery-and-magic

 11.
That's all very well, but does any bass burn better than a Fender? Fuel bills are going up, after all.
A Burns Bison? I'll get me coat...
 12. I wasn't knocking the quality of the custom made Overwaters by the way and I just know that if I played one I'd be breaking open the piggy bank mumbling "totally worth it, totally worth it". The workmanship on those is superb (so I've heard) and the workmanship and finish on the Tanglewood made ones tell you straight away that they're made in a factory in China. Mine are also really heavy 10-11lbs each - ouch! But I was surprised to hear from those who have owned both that the playability and sound from them is very similar with "not much between them". I do think there are bad copies of the Tanglewood made ones knocking around and I've had people say they didn't like them at all whereas I'd be very surprised if there was a bad copy of a proper Overwater. Bottom line, for £250 I think you're getting a lot more than a £250 bass.
 13. From what I've been told by people who have owned both, there's not a lot of difference. Hopefully some of those people will reply to this and let you know where any differences are
 14.
However, despite it not being my cup of tea musically and playing with fingers instead of a pick .... AND playing an un-Fender..... this dude is getting a good tone out his bass right there.
It's not just Fender basses you can get a good tone out of ya know
 15. I'll be watching this thread with interest I've just set up a practice routine with advice from my tutor. Warm up (5 mins) Chromatic exercises from the Bass Fitness book at 60 bpm - raising by 2 bpm when I feel like I've mastered the previous tempo. Scales practice (10 mins) Major scales, C, G, D, A, E, B, F (in order of the most likely to be used). Find different ways of playing them using all over the neck. Practice one octave, then two octaves. Say each note out loud as you play it to get rid of thinking about shapes and thinking about the notes in the scale and where they are on the fretboard. Theory practice (10 mins) Transcribe Blue Monk by Thelonius Monk (my current theory tune). Transcribe 12 bars, then improvise 12 bars. Warm down (5 mins) Same as warm up (to avoid carpel tunnel syndrome/cramping). That's for when I can only manage 30 mins. If I've got an hour, I need to double the time spent on all parts. Or, for the second half hour I'll run through my band's songs, playing along to our recordings (sans bass as I have the project files in Reaper on my PC). If I know a song really well (which is about all of them now) I'll focus on the sound of each note, the length of it and the feel of it. I try and pay attention to how I'm using my fingers to affect the tone (see Scott Devine's great lesson about that here: http://scottsbasslessons.com/beginners/the-secret-to-a-great-bass-tone.html). I'll even practice by recording the bass line so I can hear it back - a great way to be very subjective about how well you nailed it (or not as it can turn out!).
 16.
And another depressing BC thread! If musicians won't stick up for musicians, then there is no hope. ... Or, have those advocating free access to music come to the realisation that they don't stand a hope in hell anyway, so couldn't give a toss?
Just in case I've been misunderstood, I'm not advocating free access to music by supporting Spotify. There ISN'T a play for free option. You have an ad-supported version with no monthly fee (money changes hands for the ads) and you have the subscriptions models. Like I said before, the labels negotiated the .0009 cents per day rate. So, as always, it's the record labels who are screwing over the musicians, not Spotify. Listening to music on Spotify is not listening for free in my opinion. However, I head what Flyfisher's saying about changing habits in music listening. I found my old vinyl collection a few months ago. Sadly, it's less than a foot deep despite being quite an age. Back then I'd have to listen to the same album dozens and dozens of times over because I simply had no choice. Maybe I appreciated every nuance of the song more back then as a result. Now, I tend to create a radio station based on a band or song and hear a whole load of new music. I star the songs I like and create playlists for an artist that I've not discovered and will then listen to their songs over and over again. So I tend to swap between the fleeting listens of songs and deep immersion in a band. But I'm listening to a whole load more music now. And as Spotify now tells me when one of the bands I listen to are playing nearby I'm lining up more and more gigs to go to.
 17.
I'd like to think that I could trust my bandmates Its all a bit sneaky and snide no respect there.
Um, about your Sandberg...
I almost stopped a short way in, as the slapping was awful (however skillful). However, I actually enjoyed a lot of the fingerstyle stuff. It was very very busy, but in some ways that suited the machine gun velocity of the vocals. Then he slapped, tapped and did chords which seemed to be more if a 'look what I can do' exercise, rather than playing what was best for the song.
Spot on my thoughts too.
 20. I'm paying for my music through my £10 a month Spotify subscription. If you think this is too low an amount, speak to the sellers, not the buyers or the saleperson in the middle.
 21.
Downloading music isn't illegal; uploading it is. Apparently.
Still not the same as streaming music from Spotify though
 22. Hmm, I do see a huge difference between the two still. When you say streaming for free, do you mean the ad-supported version of Spotify? Because that still generates money so we're not listening to it for free, someone (the advertiser) is paying for us to listen to it. Whilst I agree that the money going to artists is pitiful, this is still not the same as illegally downloading music. I wouldn't say it's a technicality difference either! It's kinda like saying that watching ITV is taking money away from television as you're not paying to watch it. Ad-supported still = revenue generation. But you do make a good point about there being people growing up listening to music for "free". But I would go back to my original argument - the music industry sat by and let Apple and Spotify create online models that worked and the music industry got stiffed by them both. What were the labels doing whilst those companies were innovating? Oh yeah, they were suing their customers and fans. So the music industry have created this problem themselves. I'd like to swing criticism of the low revenue from streaming services back round to the labels. As I mentioned before, they negotiated the rights. No one had a gun to their head to sign the deals and without those deals Spotify would have nothing to sell and no business. Something I found interesting that is probably relevant is back when allofmp3.com was selling albums for £2.50 - £4.00. They sold bucketloads. Perhaps allofmp3.com stumbled upon the ideal price point that tipped consumers over into buying music in huge amounts. So the record labels saw this model, shut the site down and continued selling at £7.99 an album on iTunes and up to £15 in HMV and look where they are now - fighting rampant piracy and trickling cash in via Spotify. I'm aghast at their short-sightedness. I really am.
 23.
How? If I was distributing a free download to loads of people then, yes, I'd be depriving them of money. But if I download a file for which I would not otherwise pay for myself then how does that affect the artist? Perhaps I'm abnormal but I've not stopped buying music since the internet arrived. What I have done is listened to a much wider range of music than I used to. The stuff I don't like I don't buy but the likelihood is that I've bought stuff because I've discovered it while listening to free copies. If it wasn't for terabyte hard drives I'd probably delete all the stuff I've only listened to once and never will again - would that make things any better?
Now this really ins't about Spotify in the slightest. Can we not cloud the issue by discussing illegally downloading music? Spotify is not an illegal download service. Any qualms about how much the artists get paid or not should be directed to their record labels who negotiated the money with Spotify.
 24.
You'll record a demo of it, won't you?
And win the composition challenge with it too
 25. It's not fair to liken Spotify to illegally downloading music. As I mentioned in a post earlier, the labels have agreed to put the artists' music on there. If they didn't manage to negotiate suitable recompense that's the label's problem so everyone should stop blaming Spotify and comparing it to illegal downloading.
