1. I'm still on my quest to record a good bass sound and I think I've found something that helps. When recording I seem to lose all semblance of tone from the bass and if I manage to get some of it back, it's mainly from spending hours and hours tweaking the EQ. I usually record with the input level as high as I can get it without it clipping but any bass amp simulator I put on that never sounds good or clean. So I tried lowering the input level and amplifying the bass with Ampeg SVX which does sound a bit better. I'd give you audio samples to compare but I actually used two different basses so it's not a fair comparison but here's how the wave lines look. The top one is with a high input level and the bottom one is the low input level (that I think sounds a bit better when amped with the amp sim). So is it better to record low and amp up in software or to record high and just EQ the bass? I fear that I'm losing some dynamic range by recording low and that amping it up will amplify any noise/artifacts.
2.

SGC Nanyo Bass Collection SB320 Fretless.
£250 plus postage.
Based in Bristol.
I've got gas for a MarkBass combo/rig as I'm sick of carting around my Ashdown rig. So here's the start of my clear-out fundraising. This is my gorgeous Bass Collection SB320 fretless bass. I'm looking for £250 for this rare gem plus postage (possibly £25 via insured Interparcel or you can arrange a courier yourself). Made in Japan in 1988 I believe (if I read the serial number right - it certainly feels this old). Active with upgraded pickups installed by a previous owner. I don't know what they are unfortunately they but pack a good punch, are noiseless and sound great. See-through wine red Japanese sen body. Maple neck, ebony fretboard. Weight: 7lbs 4oz Super-super slim neck, one of the slimmest, easy-to-play necks on a bass ever in my opinion. Neck has side dots but the fretboard is a lovely black slab of ebony. I added the gold and abalone knobs not long after I bought it (£40 they cost!) Pretty damn good condition considering its age. Some buckle-rash on the back and various marks around the body. Hopefully the pics show this. You can't really see any of them at distance of a couple of feet. It's currently strung with Rotosound Trubass 88 nylon-wound strings. I took it for a proper setup when I put these strings on and haven't touched it since. Action is high-ish to allow for a more double-bass type feel (that's what I though at the time but I don't play the double bass!) You can hear what it sounds like here: https://soundcloud.c...stery-and-magic Pics here: I can take closer pics of any part of it, just shout. Collection is always preferred, I'm based in Bristol BS3. You can then get to try it out! And maybe some of my others that I'll be putting up soon too You can even pop round for a try if you like, no obligation to buy. I'm happy to talk bass over a coffee or beer any time. Cash or bank transfer preferred. I really don't like Ebay and PayPal or their policies. UK sales only I'm afraid, I'm a little nervous about shipping it out of the country. I do have a proper bass box for this to go in to post it and I'll coat the inside with balled-up newspaper and will most likely bubble-wrap the bass too. Trades - well the primary purpose is to get cash for MarkBass CMD 121 combo but do try me. Basses or MarkBass stuff preferred but hey, cash is still number one
3. Next time I'm in my local PMT I'll have a go on one of the Yamaha TRBX 174s (that's their entry level range). http://www.pmtonline...d-metallic.html and see how it compares to my TRBX 504. For under £200, if it's even half as well put together and as playable as my TRBX 504 it'll be worth it.
4. The Yamaha TRBXs are either passive (the 304) or active/passive with a switch (504). Not sure about the newer entry level series are. And yes, +1 for an old SGC Nanyo Bass Collection. Great basses, was my first gigging bass in the 90s.
5. The new Yamaha TRBX series are incredibly playable. My 504 has the most amazing slim neck. They're very well built and sound great. Definitely try and have a go on one.
6. I've got a hankering for a track. Been buried in band stuff for flipping ages now! (Which I love so it's all good.)
7.
Meanwhile, here's the 'teaser' you've all been waiting for. If this doesn't bring 'em in in droves...
I voted, I voted, please don't make me watch it again!

9.
Meh another thread just to share pics won't hurt right?
Just one more bass won't hurt?
10. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! I may have overcompensated on the bass as I tend to record it really full and quite loud (so I can hear every part of it as I'm recording) and in the past I've left too much bass on a track. Our actual drummer does some really nice fills that sound perfect for the song but on the recordings I use EZ Drummer and can't quite match what he does (well you can't beat a real drummer). Thanks for listening, it's good to hear the opinion from a fresh set of ears!
11.
That looks great with the white p/g and white knobs. I'd go with that.
Agreed! Yum!
12. Great to hear that you chose those two based on playability and sound and not the name Although saying that, I don't really hear anyone knocking Cort. Argh, you're giving me GAS now! Nice write-up of them too.
13. A one in a million chance happens nine times out of ten. (Terry Pratchett.)
14.
I'm nagging a couple of none members to attend , I'm sure you'll all make them feel at home (after the usual humiliating/painful/degrading initiation ceremony.)
Is that the one that makes them buy 4 more basses than they think they need to own?
15.
It was nice to meet everyone who came to the Gallifrey bassbash next year.
Damn, I missed that. Put myself and possibly Pinball down for it (providing we're free that weekend). I'll bring my Yamaha TRBX - I'm sure a few of you are keen to try those out and also my basses that I will have for sale (I'll pay the Basschat £20 selling fee before I go though.)
16. Granted, they're fairly new and therefore relatively un-tried and tested in the real world. However that sounds like a hard drive controller failure on the motherboard to me if all three went down. Unless it was one after the other. I had an SSD fail but it had an older Sandforce controller in that could die if the PC went to sleep. That's still a catastrophic failure, no one can argue with that. Three drives? That's a kick in the nuts... In my setup I record onto a normal HDD but load Reaper and all VSTs/instruments/samples from the SSD.
17. After hearing about my bass tutor Matt Downer's Stringray 5 bass being stolen last week I thought I'd post a reminder for everyone to make a note of the serial numbers of your gear. If the worst should happen, it could help to track them down. Hoping all your gear stays safe.
18. PInball and I are in a band called Beautiful Skin, playing guitar and bass. We've been recording some songs in the living room of my Victorian-terraced flat. The bass is going straight into a Guitar Rig Session audio interface, the guitars and vocals were recorded separately, both using a cheap £35 Shure PG48 mic (it's er, designed for karaoke!) and the drums are EZ Drummer. All tracking and production done in Reaper. The room acoustics were handled by nothing more than an airbed with a quilt hanging of it that was placed behind our singer. Overall I'm happy with how it came out! Lots of time was spent listening to reference tracks on my monitoring setup (a pair of M-Audio BX5a Deluxe speakers and a pair of Superlux HD 662f headphones. Here it is, our latest track, the self-titled Beautiful Skin: https://soundcloud.com/beautiful-skin/beautiful-skin
19. You're not helping my jazz GAS.
20. I'd have to say it's the lovely Kit Richardson for me. Mega-crush! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bZnXmTfE5M Also, I'm pretty sure these guys - Ninja Baby - are a band I found on here but I can't for the life of me remember which member plays bass for them. https://soundcloud.com/ninjababymusic/shadows-1
21. I'm just weedy, that's why I need a lighter rig
22. I'm thinking of replacing my Ashdown 220 Touring combo plus cab (a 2x12 setup) with something much lighter. The combo is 59 lbs and the cab is 37 lbs! (27kg and 17kg). So my cab is heavier than the GK combo! Hmm, I must try one
23. Some basses under £300 that are worth playing to see if you like them. First off - the VM Jazz you originally mentioned is a really nice bass. But as someone said, could be a little heavy. If light is what you're after then check out the new Yamaha TRBX 304 range (http://www.dv247.com/guitars/yamaha-trbx304-bass-guitar-black--106402). I have the next model up the 504 and it's superb. It has a more modern sound so won't sound like a vintage jazz. They're very nice to play indeed. I take mine out over my Overwater's (the made by Tanglewood ones, not the custom made ones). I've not tried one but there's some love for the cheap Ibanez's too, e.g. http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ibanez-sr300-bass-guitar-candy-apple--48772 But if you buy second hand (from Basschat!) then you open yourself up to a better range and choice of bass for £300. For example, all of the basses in my signature cost me less than £300 except the Overwater Contemporary Jazz which I bought new for around £600. Even that would fetch less than £300 second hand now! Where are based? Maybe a basschatter lives nearby and would let you try out some of their basses?
24. I'm definitely a bass player.
25. This sucks big time. Matt's my bass tutor! He's had that Stingray for years. He's a working musician too so these tools are part of his livelyhood.
