Being in a band is like being married to 3 -4 different people .
Quote of the year!

Way back in uni (1993 it would have been) I was into alternative rock - Faith No More, Prong, Mr Bungle and other styles of rock (RHCP, Nirvana, all that stuff - still love it all actually). Anyway, I'd been hearing mates talk about a band, and these mates were all into the same music as me. So I bought their 12" EP and played it. It started with a great, simple bassline then some kick-ass drums and I expected some awesome grungy guitar to come in. It never did but I loved the song and was hooked. It was Ain't Going Out Like That by Cypress Hill. I still consider it a rock song as good as any from the 90s So that's how I got into hip-hop. I'm back into my rock (a very broad term admittedly) music but still like some of the 90s hip-hop stuff. One of my favourite albums of all time though is the soundtrack from Judgement Night. A below-par movie but fantastic soundtrack. They mixed 90s hip-hop with 90s alt rock so we have fantastic (in my opinion) mash-ups such as Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe: And Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill:

That sounds fine to me. I listened to it through my Focusrite Forte audio interface into my M-Audio BX5A monitor speakers and couldn't hear any distortion. What setup are you listening to it through? Maybe your speakers can't handle the bass without EQing some low end off it.

Markbass - all made in Indonesia now and heavy?
Mornats replied to phatbass787's topic in Amps and Cabs
If anyone in Bristol has an Italian-made combo/cab then I'm happy to organise an A/B test with my Indonesian one. -
Is this a new thing then? Ive just gone back through all my orders and cant see this on any emails.
It wasn't on the original order confirmation, it was on their reply to my email about the cable being damaged due to lack of packaging. I won't be using them again for sure.

Well, it's such a serious breach that if they stored my credit card details (which they don't thankfully) I'd be reporting them for a breach of the data protection act. And that carries a jail term as maximum sentence. I appreciate that yeah, we should help each other but this is a major security mess up. I'll never use this site again. They also sent my replacement cable to my billing address not my delivery address so they've not gotten much right.
-
Yes, I did reply to them to point out that they shouldn't be doing this. I've been working in web user experience for over 14 years now and honestly thought that the days when an online retailer would email your password to you were long gone. They shouldn't need a customer to point this out.

I've just ordered from Gear4Music for the first time. Got a cable that was damaged in the post. That was fine, I emailed them and they very kindly said to keep that cable and they'll send another. However, their email to me about the dispatch of the new cable included my account password at the end. What the actual f***?! Now I have to change my password on a fair few sites (I have a range of passwords that I use so it's not all sites and nothing absolutely secure thankfully.) So if you use Gear4Music, please make sure that at the very least you use a unique password for their site. Emailing a password is the most stupid breach of security a site could do. I can't believe that in 2014 major retailers do this. If they held any card details on their site they'd be up for a massive fine for a breach in data security.

That's cool because they're always bloody shut when I go to visit! I've not been inside since it was Ronnie's drum shop. (Living down south for the last 14 years hasn't helped of course!)

Dorset and Somerset Bass Bash 2014: Post Event Critique

Still good for me -
Looks like a 301 or 310 (depending on whether it's active or passive).

That black Geddy Lee is a beauty! And I rarely, if ever say that about any Fenders. Whilst I'm here, here's my Overwater by Tanglewood Contemporary Jazz with Rotosound Nexus strings. And it has a matching headstock (really, how hard is it to supply a lovely matching headstock?!) And you can see a bit more of the lovely see-through flame maple here:

Dorset and Somerset Bass Bash 2014: Post Event Critique
Mornats replied to yorks5stringer's topic in Events
I'm good for all weekends but the Easter one would be good to miss I guess so I'm with GrahamT with going for the 5th or 26th. I can also possibly give someone a lift from Bristol too depending on how many people/basses I'll be carrying. I was stupid and bought a saloon so it's not the most bass friendly car... -

Dorset and Somerset Bass Bash 2014: Post Event Critique

Sounds like a good price. Not much more than the price of a good setup and lunch. I'm still very interested in this so count me in. -
I pay £25 an hour for my bass tutor and he's a professional working bass player who is incredibly talented on both the electric and double bass. He himself will book a lesson in with any of his idols if they're in the area to keep on top of his technique. I believe he's got at least a degree, maybe a masters in music so his theory is first class. He also knows how to apply it to the instrument. My technique is noticeably better and by that I mean people who heard me play before the lessons now say that there's a massive improvement in technique and tone. So if you can, grab a working pro bass player as a tutor. None of these "I play guitar but can teach bass" people. You really want someone who lives and breathes bass. The conversations I have with my tutor about general gigging, playing and gear before the lesson are almost worth the money for the lesson alone!

Well I never expected to see cleavage when I started this thread. Well done Basschat

Righto, just played my first gig with this. It was at Mr Wolf's in Bristol if anyone knows the venue. Fairly small I'd say but they have a big PA system. I've heard a few bands there and they've always been rocking loud and have sounded great. I asked the sound guy if he wanted a DI only from the combo, a mix of combo and DI or just the combo on it's own and he said "that's a Mark yeah? That'll be plenty on it's own". So I set the volume to what sounded "bloody loud" to me stood in front of it and it sounded absolutely pounding loud and clear and punchy and just right. It was great. Then I find out that volume is on just shy of 3 out of 10 with the input gain just under halfway. Wow! I asked someone in the audience if the bass was too loud and they said it just sat right in the mix. So I'm a happy chappy. I don't even think I'll need an extension cab if I've got PA support in bigger venues (if only bigger venues would invite us lol!)
No, the most expensive is getting something else, and then selling it to buy the Markbass when you realise that it wasn't what you really wanted.
That was part of my reasoning to go straight for the CMD 121P. It was pretty much top of most people's recommendations for a good, loud, lightweight amp. Give those TC electronics a whirl though to see if you like the sound. If you're in PMT soon ask them if they know when they're getting the MarkBass stuff in stock so you can compare side-by-side. You're still welcome to try mine of course but you'll be able to crank it up a bit in PMT and try them against each other.

Don't underestimate the quality of the Tanglewaters. A lot of people who own one of those and the British-made Overwaters tend to say there's not a lot between them. My Contemporary J4 is better than every MIM Fender I've played and most MIA Fender (there have been two MIAs that have been better sounding/playing). Sadly I've only had a chance to play a Rockbass and not a German made Warwick so can't compare to those. Maybe someone who's played both can say of there's a big difference between them.
-
I've got the Contemporary 4 and playability is great, the sound is really good too. It's a bit heavy though, coming in at 10lb 7oz for the 4 string version. That's my only gripe really, otherwise it would be fantastic, especially for the price.
After a month you'd end up leaving the pick-ups in the same spot and using the tone control just like any other bass... Probably in the normal neck/bridge alignment too!
I did think that it was a very interesting idea that seems to work and then, yeah, what you said!
-
Is it just me or could I only choose combinations that match their current range of basses? More choice of colours would be brilliant I think.
-
That was really nice, great groove.
-
I've always thought that this amp just lets the bass sound come through fairly untouched. (My bass tutor has one so I've had some low-volume experience with them.) Does it colour the sound? It colours it yellow! (Couldn't resist!)
