Interesting question. I too am thinking of expanding more from 4 to 5/6. I've got a 5, but can't say I use the B much apart from avoiding reaching beyond the 5th. So I guess I'm asking, is the added string really all about saving the effort of moving about much? When do you use the additional string(s)?

I think what Dood may be suggesting is one of the pups thst has on coil under the E and A, and a second coil under the D and G. I've heard the claims that it sounds like a P split coil. Can't say I've tried it.

Back on topic... If you don't mind! Just looking on ebay just now i found a 51p pup for less than £55 posted. It's a hand-made "Baytone" from John Anthony guitars. That could be worth looking into.

I asked the same question some months ago in relation to fitting strings to me Warwick Thumb. What I ended up doing was filing the bridge to make the gap wider to get the string through. You still need to clamp the string narrow to get it to fit through, but it was an answer to the problem.

Jon will be along later I'm sure and he'll confirm of course, but this looks like the same body as the Westone headless. I had one it was ok. The tone was quite aggressive. As they would both have come from the Matsumoko factory, sharing a body shape between Westone and Aria would be very possible.

When the Mods see this it ma be best to move it to bass Repairs and Technical. It isn't normal for A, D or G to run out of saddle movement for intonation. I've never used Ernie Ball strings. I know they're popular with guitarists. So presumably their bass strings are ok. Intonation at the 12th fret can often appear difficult to set. The best way to do this can sometimes be by playing harmonics, rather than actually fretting the note. The reason for this is when fretting the note you will be stretching the string as you press down. The degree of stretch is dependent on the action height. Your best course of action is to wind the saddle back to a more normal position, re-tune the bass and start again using harmonics.

What I use a lot are the rhythms that come on my Zoom B3. I have to say there's not a massive selection, but the pedal has many other uses too. One additional feature is also a blooper, so you can even build other rhythms using your bass, and then build on it from there. Well it's good enough for Vic Wooten.

Blue [/quote] I'm on holiday in Bulgaria right now. A few restaurants are playing what might be called "golden oldies". Most are pumping techno club tracks. In some respects we live in sad times. It's almost like we have gone back to 50s/60s UK: back then the BBC wouldn't recognise Rock n Roll. The young of the day had to dig deeper to find music to excite. The places you looked to were the pirate radio stations like Caroline and Luxembourg. Today to find new exciting bass we need to dig deeper than what the BBC offers to find many of the key in ovations in the art. Yet when you find them it is good and worth the effort. Even on TV when a band is on, the bass player hardly gets a look in. Often during the bass solo you will be shown shots of the guitar or the drummer. Ps. another great who brought bass to the front of the stage was Sting.

You've got me thinking too about my playing. I've been in a band, but my work schedule is demanding and I've drifted into playing music scores and fixing up basses. I don't address my need to be able to do what you do and play along with a track in a simulated band situation. I'm away on holiday atm, but I must deal with this when I'm back. I'm no different to you.
