If you're only looking for something more compact rather than specifically a shorter scale, I think you'll be very pleased if you have a shot of my ACG Finns... I have to say I think 30.5" might be pushing it a little, unless you adjust your technique a little. I know Roscoe made a 30" 6er recently and Gard, who makes them, said it had a pretty good low B, if you make some playing adjustments, which I assume he meant playing a little lighter. Eude

If you can get hold of a good Ibanez Promothean 5110 Combo you'd be laughing, it'd suit your needs perfectly!

As you know I play 33" basses, ACGs as it happens, 4, 5 and 6 string, no problems with floppy strings here. I reckon you could go to 32", or possibly even 31.5" without it being noticeably floppy, unless you play VERY hard. How short are you thinking of going? There's likely to be all sorts of arguments about how scale length effects string vibration etc., some substantiated with physics and some just plain insane, it's been done to death a million times, so I'm not going to bother chiming in on that, but one thing you can try to tighten things up is change to a string that's a little tighter in feel, I've always found hex wound DRs tighter than their round wound ones. You can also go up a string gauge too. I went from 0.125 0.100 0.080 etc up to 0.130 0.105 0.085 etc. when I first started on 33" basses, but I've pretty much gone back now. I know Alan would build you an amazing shorty if you choose to go with ACG. If you want to try out a 33", you're more than welcome to pop over, I'm in sunny South Croydon/Sanderstead. Cheers, Eude

+1 for Lakland. I remember being blown away by Funkle's Skyline 44-02 a few year's back. Very nice to play and a great modern aggressive tone, particularly from the bridge pickup. I've never been the biggest fan of the look of those particular basses, but the sound and playability more than made up for that! Spectors are fine fine instruments, incredibly well made and pretty reasonable value for money when you compare them to others in a similar ballpark. My only problem with them has been the reach required to play 1st position, if you're shorter than average, like myself, you might find them quite uncomfortable to play. You've talked previously about maybe trying for a custom bass, maybe now's the time? My vote would be for an ACG, but you seem more of a classic style guy, bar the bongo, so maybe a Shuker J or P might be a good idea? Jon would build you something pretty awesome for around, or maybe even less than the cost of a similarly specc'd Spector. There's obviously the issue of the wait, but his times seem to be much improved lately. Having owned a custom Shuker modern style Jazz I can confirm it nearly played itself, the nicest Jazz bass I've ever owned! Eude

My vote would be for the ACG, but I'm a little biased, however you're used to having a 5 string, then I guess it would have to be the Sadowsky. The vote for buying an ACG 5 string isn't a bad one though, there's some gorgeous stock ones available right now, which would give you a bit more flexibility than the Sadowsky with your preferred build quality...
