Fantastic mate! Can't wait to hear/see more
No problem. I love all that stuff myself, too, as you can probably tell. With this kind of bass, I tend to favour a punchy, middly tone with plenty of 'honk' and some 'growl'. The wenge should enhance the latter characteristic in particular. Also, some luthiers believe wenge to offer greater stability and consistency than maple, which means that even with a 34" scale it should still have a killer B-string. For the rest, I wanted the top to look spectacular, but wanted to limit the higher frequences I might have got with, say, maple, henced the flamed ash. If I should need to add to or deviate from the tonal characteristics of the wood, the Scott Devine circuit should give me everything I need. The main thing I like about it is the mid sweep. Very few amps and onboard preamps offer the tonal possibilities I'm looking for in the high mid range, so I'd actually been looking for something of this nature for a while. The dual concentric knob makes it easy to find the 'sweet spot' and set it to the desired level. What's more, the circuit can be used passively by means of a push-pull switch, which, when in passive mode, also acts as a tone knob.

Sorry, I only just realised it was you, Ewan ;-)
Thanks mate, for such a concise reply. I didn't think you'd mind sharing the nitty gritty I may have another bass in the future, and I'm really drawn to your wood combo though, the flamed Ash over Walnut looks amazing! And, yes, it is me
Good gawd Eude, thats one helluva collection you've now got!! Have to say that 6er of yours is my personal favourite but this one is an absolute beauty! Can you post some soundclips of them all soon??
Hey mate, I will try, I promise. Having a 7 month old round the house doesn't leave me much time to do anything these days, never mind anything musical, so it might be a little while yet. Since I made this post, I also received a lovely ACG Skelf Prototype Guitar too! Family photo of all the ACGs very soon, and sound clips to follow when I manage it. Hope you're well bud Eude

Geeky question here mate, but whats the "tonal goals" using this wood combo? Eude

Wow, this is going quickly! Really excited for you mate, I love the Original Series Shape Eude
After a brief email exchange the Black Limba Recurve has mysteriously morphed into this rather lovely J Type that will collected along with the Finn in a week or so. Mum's the word http://www.acguitars...portfolio/2881/
Shhhhh
They do listen to bass players, they listen to the ones that helped them with the toneprints, experienced known players with big reputations. Who would you listen to?. As for ugly, do you want to play it or marry it??
Fair enough, my real point was that they haven't even replied to any of my emails, which I consider rude, and doesn't paint TC in a good light as far as I'm concerned. I'm not asking them to take my thoughts on board and build me a specific combo, just offering a bit of input from my experience of 22 years of playing, a little "thanks but no thanks" would suffice... I know they involved some pro bass players for the tone prints, which is fair enough, but I think you'll find they asked them for input rather than the other way round, as they were already TC users. As far as the design goes, each to their own, I just think they could've given it a little more thought, there are a lot of nicer designed bits of kit out there, to my eye, including some in TC's own range. It reminds me of kit from when I started playing years ago, its just a big black box. I'm not dissing the product itself though, as I've not tried one, the tone print function might well be useful, but I'd be more likely to look at the head version of this than the combo, it's just a bit too bulky for the amount of power it puts out. </my other 2p> Eude
Getting something built for me is something I hadn't considered. I thought it be beyond my budget. Have to look in to that more thoroughly. The move from headless to headed. I can do that. I mean, I went from headed to headless. Do love headless I must admit. Oooh ! Just checked out ACG...really like the work. Possibly affordable too. I know what way I'm headed now. Thanks for that. :-)
ACG will do you a mean headless too if you're that way inclined I can't recommend ACG basses enough by the way! Eude

Cabs 210 / 212 / 112 - light weight, portable, Powerful and Quality!
eude replied to JamesFlashG's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've managed to fill an auditorium with one cab and a promethean head at mofat
+1 on this, I heard sk8 play through that set up and then did the same myself, single 1x12 cab, the head wasn't cranked by any means and it kept up easily with a loud valve guitar combo a loud drummer and singer going through a PA. I was pleasantly surprised, much more volume than I expected. -
Very VERY nice mate! Eude

EAD Foundation 212
-
Hey guys, It's with a heavy heart that I think I might have to sell my EAD Cab. Terribly timed car accident related nonsense has occurred, with no injuries thankfully, but I think I'm going to have to raise a little bit of cash. I'm unlikely to need anything more than my Promethean combo for the foreseeable as the new addition to the family has forced me to put my rock star delusions on the back burner for a while. So, still not entirely sure about this, but here goes... EAD Foundation 112 3-way cab Prototype cab handmade by Dave Perry himself, basically a 1x12 version of the 2x12 cab which a lucky few own already. 12" and 6" speakers with a tweeter. High and Mid Attenuation via custom crossover. Completely rock solid. 300W handling at 8 Ohms. Not sure about weight, think its about 40 lbs odd, feels similar to the Aggie GS112 I used to have, an easy one hand lift for a bass player, what with us all being strapping strong lads and all, probably a two handed lift for a guitarist or a singer though. The cab has barely been used and only at bedroom volume levels, probably not even broken in properly, as Dave fitted a brand new drivers before shipping it to me. It hasn't left the house since I got it home and is immaculate. You can read around this a bit here >> http://www.extendedaudiodesign.co.uk The 112 Cab listed on there doesn't feature the 3-way design here, so it is missing the 6 inch driver and the High/Mid Crossover, but you can get the idea. Thinking £470 plus shipping, but would prefer pick up from South Croydon, any less and its simply not worth moving on, might have to sell something else. Absolutely no trades thank you. Let me know if anyone is interested and while I give this some serious thought. Eude
The Mi 10 we have changed to 8 ohms now... The original was 4 ohm to get max power in a one cab set up for the MiBass 220...
Thanks for chiming in mate, is it Lee? Anyway, really glad that the Mi10 is now 8 Ohms too, I think it makes a lot more sense. Do the Mi10 and Mi12 play nicely together, or are you more sensible to match the cabs?... Cheers, Eude
Ok, the chassis and screen-printing scream 'cheap Chinese chassis'. Guess that's to be expected at this (suggested) price, though. I think the illuminated Ashdown logo on the prototype was a lot sexier than the weird blue panel they've gone with too. I notice the rear panel says 'MIN LOAD 8 OHMS'. So it's basically incompatible with their own Mi10 cab (4 ohms)? That's a bit of an odd decision.
The whole thing was always meant to be cheap, as Wojtek Pilichowski wanted his music students in Poland to be able to afford to buy one. The 8 Ohms thing comes from the same reasoning, that students might not be able to buy 2 cabs to get the most out of the amp, so making it shoot the wad at 8 means they could get the full wattage from a reasonably cheap cab. I like the idea, I used to gig a LittleMark 250 with a single Aggie GS112 and I loved the ability to gig with just that, bass on the back, cab in one hand, amp in a shoulder bag and a hand free to open doors or push away overly excited groupies (I wish ). If I could've got the full 250W out of the amp with that cab I would probably still own it now. I think this little Pi head and a Mi12 cab would be a really useful set up for the real world player, but probably not for the kind of person who thinks they need 750W and 2 X 4x10s to play their local pub... Eude

I prefer something a little simpler, but a little more stuff than the MiBass 2.0 has. Either the addition of a Low Mid Control to make it Bass - Low Mid - High Mid - Treble, or even better, make the Low and High Mid Parametric, but with nice simple knobs rather than sliders... Given that I've managed many a gig with just my Promethean 1x10 combo, I'd be very confident that a PiBass and a Mi12 cab to cover most "basses", if you'll pardon the pun. If my Ibby "burnt down", I'd probably replace it with exactly that. Eude
Was just looking at this myself. I think the PiBass is a clever entry level head, price depending of course.
I'm 100% its under £300, I'm pretty sure they either said £249 or £269. Very good alternative for the TC BH250 and the GK MB200 I reckon.
First a MiBass, now a PiBass! What's next? A BiBass for the confused or curious? Or perhaps a DiBass sold exclusively in Wales? There's nice ;-)
Ha ha, who knows dude
-
Well the PiBass head is finally available >> http://ashdownmusic.com/products/1/Bass-Amplification/17/Signature-Series-/101/PiBass-240/ Not sure of the price, but I think it's about £250. It shoots it's whole wad of 240W at 8 Ohms only, so it doesn't leave a lot of room to expand, but it's still very appealing, I guess as a back up head, or an alternative smaller rig for smaller gigs matched with a single 1x12 cab perhaps. I'd love to pick one up, but I really can't justify it at the moment, I'm going to stick with my Promethean combo for a while yet. If anyone gets one of these I'd love to hear how they get on! Cheers, Eude

Here's a brand new Ibanez SR 1206 for under £1000 >> http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_sr1206_vnf.htm To be honest, if you're stuck to £1000 or under, I really don't think you can do any better given the constraints you've set. If was in your position, I'd try and go custom if I could stretch to it, if not, go for that Ibanez. Eude
-
If you could stretch a few more hundred £'s you might be able to get a new custom bass made, given the nature of custom basses, the wait involved would allow you to save up the rest? I, like you, have small hands and I've found going for 33" scale rather than 34" or up helps a lot, probably more than the neck depth or shape. You also want to think about nut width. My first custom 6er had a 57mm nut, which was just a little too wide, I've now got a 6er with a 52mm nut, which is VERY comfortable. String spacing at the bridge is another thing to think about, 16.5mm is very comfortable for little hands. If you go down the non-custom route, both the Ibanez Soundgear and Warwick Basses, not the broad neck ones obviously, have similar measurements to what I've described above, but on a regular 34" scale. You should be able to find a nice Ibanez for your budget and potentially a Warwick secondhand for a similar price. If you have an questions about the custom route, feel free to PM me. Eude

Looking good mate!

I'd go for binding, why the hell not?!
