ACG build
In other news: Having spend a while trying to find a Jazz bass I like (but to no avail) I have commissioned an ACG 'Jazz' bass with all the bits I like. More on this story later...
You're a horrid horrid tease...
  2. Very nice mate!
  3. Lovely work as always mate!
  4.
Yes, definitely going to the London show. Earplugs at the ready! RK
Excellent, I'll be there all weekend. I'll make sure I bring the new bass along too Eude
  5. Beautiful bass Kev, congrats mate.
Dare I say the Recurve looks even better than the Wal. Difficult to achieve but a very fine looking bass.
I wholeheartedly agree mate, that ACG is a lovely example of the evolution of bass Eude
  6.
I was very pleasantly surprised when I tried these ( on Prime Bass/Stephen's old Zebrano ACG) - The asymmetric neck was immediately comfortable, and makes so much sense in that the further you have to reach toward the fatter strings, the less wood gets in the way, if that makes sense
Its definitely the way forward Eude
  7.
Hi Ewan, good to see that the GAS ailment is obviously incurable, ha ha! This build looks awesome, I am subscribed now. I've been locked inside my new amp for a week or two, but I'll be following this build with interest now. Hope you are well, and that we can catch up in Moffatt again. RK
Hey mate, good to hear from you. Yup, the GAS never really ever goes away. Glad you approve of the build, I thought you might I saw your amp thread, I see it was worth the wait. I'll hopefully make the next Moffat Bash, fingers crossed. I'll definitely be at the London Bass Guitar Show next year if you're going to make an appearance? Eude

    ACG build

    Looking good matey!
  9.
I'll get back to you. WoT might be better placed to answer in the meantime? These are the first cabs I've had without tweeters for a while, but I'd gradually been turning them down and then off. My initial reaction is, I'm not going to miss them. The mids and highs are so nice and musical, I think the cabs are going to work wonderfully in a band. The higher notes already really sing without the tweeter.

Well...there's a place for tweeters, and they're really a part of some people's sound, but personally speaking I don't miss them one jot. Even on all the Berg cabs I've owned, I just found them clacky. And when I rolled the tweeters back, I always felt I was left with lows and no clarity. The TKS's have upper mids which seem to let the character of the bass bloom, without any fizz. If you need more, pushing the upper mids and highs on the amp gives you more clarity, with all the brittle unpleasantness rolled off in a really natural way. It's a godsend for flats, 'cos it leaves that 'woodiness' intact, and with rounds I can get a growl which sits perfectly in the mix without any harshness. Here's a couple of clips which I think / hope illustrate the point. The first two involve my S212, which sounds just like my pair of S112s did. Jump to 1m30s on this for the nearest I'll ever get to slapping. Which is really nothing of the sort, but... Hope this helps...
Thanks guys, and as you know as much as it does help, it doesn't really help, if you know what I mean. You have fueled the GAS, again... Eude
  10. Lovely set up mate! So you went without tweeters too? I came very close to getting some of these a little while back, but life got in the way, as it does, maybe next year. Anyway, I was wondering if I could live without a tweeter, so I'm very interested to hear how you think the compare to gear you've had in the past once you've had a bit of time with them. Cheers, Eude
  11. Amazing! Congrats mate!
  12.
Why has no idea replied to this yet?! This sounds awesome! I've been spending a lot of my time on his website recently looking at the new 'Standard' range, nothing about them sounds standard to me Serious GAS right now! I've just never played one and that's what's holding me back and also if there is a pay plan kinda thing. I guess I should ask him.. Anyway, I'll be looking forward to updates on this!! You lucky sod!
Thanks matey, glad you like it! I really can't wait to have the bass in my grubby little mitts As far as the "Standard Range" goes, you're right! Not really Standard at all. I thought I might be GAS free for at least a little while, but the prospect of an affordable bolt-on Finn SC Classic 4 string has got me drooling on my keyboard. I've got a 5 string fretless ACG, 6 string fretted ACG, and the 5 string fretted ACG above on the way, surely I can justify one more, a 4 string to complete the stable, right? If you're ever in South London, you're more than welcome to come try my ACGs out. Eude
  13. Just to jump in here again, I managed to use my MiBass 2.0 head and 2 x Mi10 cabs in anger for the first time on Friday. VERY impressed. For such a little rig, there's a lot of authority there. Don't expect massive sonorous low end, but there's a lot of clarity and a seriously tight low end. I was playing my 6 string bass, and the full range of the instrument spoke clearly, with clarity, very hifi like as I mentioned before, and far from muffled. The rig kept up with an electronic kit, singer and acoustic going through a PA, plus a guitard pushing a 50W Marshall through a 4x12 in a very awkward shaped room. I was also stood behind the cabs most of the time, alongside the drummer, and we could both hear every note clearly. I have no doubt in my mind that this little rig would keep up nicely in a similar live situation. If I fancy a bigger low end, I can always pick up a Mi12 cab too, but for now the flexibility and available power from this set up fits my needs perfectly! Eude
  14. I'll have the Hi Beam one if it's still going begging mate!
  15. I know, another build diary, sorry... As some of you may know, I've got another ACG on the go. I've had to shift two ACGs to make this one happen, but it'll be worth it. Specs as follows... Krell SC E Type Bolt-on 5 strings 33" Scale Swamp Ash Body with Flamed Maple Top The body will be "coloured in" Black 5 piece Maple/Wenge/Purpleheart Neck Pau Ferro Fingerboard 45mm Nut Width 18mm Spacing at the Bridge Black Hardware throughout including Gotoh Resolite Tuners and Hipshot B Type Bridge ACG PB pickup and RFB pickup, as close to the MM and Precision bass sweet spots as possible, adjusted for the shorter scale length and customised to fit in 40mm casings Series/Parallel/Singlecoil switch for the RFB ACG DFM 4K A/P Pre-amp consisting of 2 low pass filters, switchable treble boost and a passive tone with active/passive switching I've found I've settled on 5 strings as a go to instrument these days, and I wanted a really fancy one The idea is that this bass will hopefully cover all my favourite bass sounds, from a gnarly Musicman Stingray to a passive rootsy P Bass. All that in a very sexy package! I love the ACG's Krell shape, I love SC basses, but prefer the response of bolt-on instruments. This should tick all the boxes! Think that's about it! This build started a while ago, so this thread should bring it all up to speed. The Pau Ferro is third on the right. The neck and fingerboard are on the far left. Here's all the woody bits. The new Krell SC E Type shape comes to life, should be the first of its kind Really starting to take shape now. You can see the revised ACG bolt-on singlecut neck joint here too. As it happens, there's a new series of ACGs, the standard range, where they're offering singlecut bolt-ons for very nice prices That's all for now! Any questions? Eude
  16. I agree with all of the above. The Thumb is an amazing instrument, a true evolution in bass guitar. I had a BO 5 years back and it was my main bass for a long time, used it on a lot of recording where it was always magnificent, live it cut through effortlessly too. My only problem was a side effect of the small body, the reach to first position was just too far for a bloke of my stature, at 5 foot 6, tall folks probably wouldn't struggle much at all though. I used to have to wear the bass quite low in order to make it comfortable live, but then you have to compromise your playing hand's position, which is why I eventually moved it on. I only wish I'd ordered a 32" scale one before the custom shop prices went insane. Eude
  17. Si, you know that kind of specs I like on a 6er. I think a lot of the advice above is good though, probably best not to over think it and if you are at all concerned with anything being weird, then go with something that you know will feel familiar. If you want something to challenge you and to perhaps take your playing in a different direction, then maybe you should go a bit wild In my experience, a shorter scale, 33", and tighter string spacing, 16.5mm, lend themselves well to 6 string playing, the neck isn't overly wide, your fingers don't need to stretch too far to cover the range of the bass. This kind of set up won't stand too much down tuning, if you like that kind of thing, simple physics, but the slightly shorter scale seems to sweeten the upper register and fatten up the skinnier strings. As far as techniques go, unless you have massive or really fat hands, I think you can get used to playing any technique on any spacing, its all about practice. Just my 2p Eude
  18.
I use the mi12 cabs, and couldn't disagree more with the idea that they are limited, sound wise. I've used them on every gig for the last few years playing loads of different styles, and they've handled everything I've thrown at them-it doesn't matter whether I use the 4, 5 or 6 string, Upright,Synth or whatever, the rig always perfoms. In fact this weekend I used just one cab with the PiBass head (with my Warwick Streamer 5), and it sounded great. Put it this way- my two mi12 cabs replaced my Bergantino HS410.
I completely agree, I would describe the sound from my Mi10 cabs as far from muffled. They sound big and open, almost hifi. One thing that a lot of folks forget is that with all cabs, what you put in massively effects what you get out and some amps speak better through some cabs. My guess would be, that seeing you're already using Ashdown gear anyway, you'd probably get what you're looking for from most Ashdown gear. Eude
  19. Well practice with the one cab went very well, completely overpowered 2 guitars in a small room, tone was open and even. I should be having a proper live rehearsal this coming Friday, so I'll get to try out both cabs at the same time, will keep you posted. Eude
  20. I've got a MiBass 2.0 and 2 X Mi10 cabs. I've only managed bedroom use thus far, but I have an "acoustic" rehearsal/audition tonight with a new band. I'm going to use just the one cab, but assuming we get to proper rehearsing I'll use the whole rig, VERY much looking forward to that. I think the cab is a lot more capable than a lot of people would be willing to accept, just because someone on here has an opinion, it doesn't make it fact, especially if they haven't even seen the cab in question in real life. 2 of these cabs would be absolutely fine in a live situation with a loud drummer, assuming you have a powerful enough head. Eude
  21. Lovely, and quick! How long was the turnaround on this build? Eude

  23.
Ugh. I'm completely racked with indecision. So... short list so far is: Ashdown Mibass combo - surprisingly good, and LOUD, nice tone... but I worry about the 10" speaker at gig volumes. Ibanez P3110 - as above really... probably preferred the Ashdown tonally. Amazingly small little thing though. Fender Rumble 100 v3 - very nice tone, amazingly light, but is 100w going to be enough... but with a 12" speaker it should be less "farty" than a 10? Also - no chance of connecting a second cab. GK MB112 - good, but probably not as nice as the Fender, but seemed louder. TC-E BG250 2x8 - amazingly small little thing - not convinced that it'll cope being turned up loud. The Fender and the Ibanez can be had for peanuts... and I've seen the GK for less than £300 - so that's quite tempting, too. Pfft. Decisions...
Its a tough decision, I'd be tempted to go with whichever solution is more flexible, i.e. giving you the option of adding a second cab for more volume should you need it. My 2p would be the Ashdown, but I have mentioned that previously Anyway, best of luck mate, and good work managing to audition all those prospective options, not an easy task! Eude
Yup. Balance is more important than weight, IMO, and 10.5 is par for the course for a sixer. Bet this feels great. Looks gorgeous, too!
Thanks mate, my thoughts too. You can get lighter 6 strings but, not with Ash bodies and Wenge necks!

Stand well back Flippyfloop! The bass weighs.10.5 lbs! To be honest, I don't think you'd find anything made of dense Ash and Wenge weighing much less. The bass is very comfortable when you're playing it, standing or seated and that's what counts right? Eude
