Please stop, I already have a custom 5 string being built right now, but this just is not helping!
-
You could go for a Graft J Type, a little bit more affordable?...
-
Nice. Yup, if I could afford the Multi Coils I'd be doing the same, they really sound impressive, such clarity and authority. Amazing stuff and worth every penny I'm sure, if only I had more pennies... Eude

Fantastic news mate! I'm a big fan of Alan's work, currently having a 5 string made too, no build thread yet as the top is still on its way over from America... That is going to be a lovely bass. What pickups are you going for? I look forward to watching this come alive! Ewan

Cool mate, so you pulled the trigger? How is it? Eude
Well gigged the Mi 12" last night. It seemed to have a lot more in the mid range than my Genz 2x12, not as smooth sounding but then it is a much cheaper cab. It didn't struggle to keep up with my soul band at all, in fact it admirably surprised a few band members who thought it looked 'too small' and would therefore fart out. As i say it wasn't as smooth as i would have liked but then i think a bit of time to eq things on my amp may sort that. Also perhaps its not as light as i would have liked either (memories of a light Markbass 15") but all in all not a bad cab. I'm tempted to try a 10" if i can save some pennies again, perhaps put the 12" with it for a modular rig.
That's great news mate! By not as smooth sounding, do you mean just a bit more edgey/grunty, or was the sound a little less balanced than what you're used to? I can really recommend the Mi10, its a great little cab, enjoyed a little light noodling through mine yesterday while it was too hot to be outside! You can get them pretty cheap now too >> http://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-cabs/pid24234/cid686/ashdown-mibass-mi10-1x10-cab.asp P.S. it doesn't have a speakon jack, if you do get one, not fine finding out you have the wrong cables...
Cheers. I've got a 300w head, but it puts out a lot, it's definitely loud . Just have to persuade the Exchequer of the Household now...
Should be plenty then mate, best of luck! Eude
Would 2 Mi12's keep up with a drummer and two guitarists? Rock covers band sort of thing, average volume for a band - we don't make ears bleed put it that way
I would certainly think so, as long as you have a reasonably powerful amp, say 400 or 500 Watts would be plenty. When I get gigging again, I'm hoping my 2 X Mi10s and my MiBass 2.0 head will keep up in a similar setting, if not I'll move them out for the 12s Eude

Nice one mate, look forward to hearing how you get on! They are very well built aren't they, my Mi10s are solid as hell A single Mi10 would be fine for a small acoustic gig and is a treat for home practice, but I reckon it'd struggle in a 7 piece soul band. 2 X Mi10s would be just fine though. I find I have to push the low end a little with the smaller cabs, certainly when using just one, so the Mi12 must put out a nice thick natural amount of bass Eude
Apropos of absolutely nothing I've utterly convinced myself that I "need" a 33" (or 32" bass). Oh dear. This is how GAS strikes, isn't it?
It has begun... On a serious note, you should definitely give it a go
-
I've got a few 33" basses and have owned several others, 4, 5 and 6 string flavours and I've never found the low B to be lacking whatsoever. I moved to 33" for very similar reasons and would recommend trying a shorter scale length to anyone! 32", might be pushing it a little depending on who has made it, but a good luthier can make it work, and it'll be even better if you play with a lighter touch. Who is the maker in question? ACG recently built a 32" 6 string Harlot (MkII) ( http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/0152-harlot-mkii-6-short-scale/ ) and the low B on that was just right, it wouldn't stand any death metal chugalug style playing, but for finger style and a bit of slap, it's great. An incredibly comfortable instrument, and its available too It'd be mine if I had funds available and didn't already have an ACG 6er... Eude

Dood, that looks awesome! Great work! I did wonder what you were up to... I'll bet that sounds beastly. What are you planning for the preamp? Eude
-
That is going to be a very nice looking bass mate! Amazing Eude

I popped Fender flats on my ACG Fretless 5 and I'm VERY impressed! I'd also recommend SIT Silencers for a more modern fretless tone, they really are wonderful strings and feel fantastic, but if you want a more uprighty tone, I think the Fenders are a very good shout. I found a 5 string set from Ebay for about £20. Eude

The Mi12 looks pretty bargainiferous. I went for 2 Mi10s, but part of me thinks I could've gotten away with just one Mi12...
Best tones in bass, good idea.
Well, it won't get the growl and sizzle you get from a modern jazz bass setup, but my 6 string can get that in spades, but this should cover everything else. The preamp will be switchable active/passive, so I should hopefully be able to get a pretty good version of a passive P Bass along with an active MM tone. I imagine combined, it could sound enormous Oh, I'm hoping to have the MM style pickup switchable too, series/parallel/singlecoil too, so if should get close to a PJ too Eude
Woohoo! Another build thread to watch? This is becoming a bit of a habit. Therapy needed.
Haven't actually started one yet, but it's on my to do list!
-
Nice one mate! I have an ACG being built right now and I'm planning on having one pickup in the MM position and one in the PB position, trying to ape the tones of both a Musicman and Precision bass in one, I expect the layout will end up similar to what you have there, if a positioned a little closer to the neck. Eude
-
Well that came out nice Congrats mate. How do you like the pickup location? I appreciate it's early days of course... Eude
Thanks dudes. I thought about it loads before decidin, and if it's anything like my graft finn then it'll be amazing. I chose a 33" for the obvious ease of playing benifits, weight saving and the added tonal pallette it'll give in conjunction with the bridge pickup being moved slightly further away from the bridge. I'm already counting down the days.
You're gonna love the 33" scale mate. It sweetens the upper register without sacrificing anything on your low E, and it really does make things that little bit more comfortable. The change isn't that noticeable but you're hands will thank you on long gigs and you'll find you can play some things you couldn't previously... Eude
That's the first time I've been cool then, never mind VERY cool.
Welcome (to your Doom...)
Very cool. Will hopefully join the 33" gang soon huh Eude Si
Its a VERY cool gang
Well it's here... And I am very impressed. Instant classic Ashdown tone (if that's not your thing, this really isn't the amp for you), very warm (not muddy) but with plenty of grit and bite if you want it. Excellent drive control, despite the absence of any valves, and very reminiscent of my old ABM 500 but without the size and weight. I've been using a Mibass for a while and really haven't got on with it - the comprehensive EQ and tone shaping isn't something I need and I found myself constantly twiddling the knobs and sliders. With the Rootmaster, it sounds great straight away, before the EQ is even adjusted. It's heavier than the other lightweight amps I've owned (GK, Markbass, Ashdown) but it is a bit larger. I'm not even sure if it is in the same category as those, but it's certainly much lighter than the ABM. So far I've only played it indoors but so far I'm really chuffed. I think Ashdown are on to a winner here, and I'm very happy. Live test on Saturday!
Nice one mate! I nearly went for one of these but ended up going for the MiBass 2.0, don't make me regret it What cabs you planning on using with this? I reckon a Rootmaster 420 and a Mi12 cab would make a really great gigging/rehearsal set up! Edue

Very nice mate! I've had similar plans in the past, that's a really nice looking J Type Nice choice in the scale length too Eude
