That looks brilliant mate. Looks like it'll be a race to the finish, which bass will win? Eude

Great review mate. Glad the bass has found another happy home. One of the nicest single cuts out there Eude

You're getting good at this Rich. Top work! Eude
I find them pretty soft under finger but the sound is by no means soft. I originally went from mediums to light to try and reduce friction as I have sensitive little fingers Through my search the Overwaters were the smoothest feeling of all of them. There is great string tension, but the way they are wound just works so well, almost like they are coated... But they aren't. OW strings are one of those things in the bass world that I don't understand as to why everyone doesn't use them. Cost & performance to me nothing comes close.
Sold I'll definitely give them a go next then dude, may as well pop some on the Shuker too, as I'm going to try and give it a proper set up, get the action a lot lower, like me ACG. Now lets get back to drooling at that bass </sidetrack> Eude
Tonally I find the Overwaters very similar to DR Black Beauties (which would look awesome on the Marseer) which a good friend of mine swears by. I have never tried the Low Riders so would not wantto comment. I find them quite bright and good in the upper mids. I tried so many brands I lost track until 2 years ago when I took a punt on a set of Overwaters and have never used anything since. Plus the price in a 6 string set is sooooooo reasonable!
Thanks for that dude! Yeah, the pricing is very keen. How about feel, are they softer than usual or are they tight? As far as I recall, most of the DR strings are slightly easier going, used to use Hi-Beams a long time ago when I "played" 6 string fretless Eude

Looking great matey, Robbie's headstock design is a masterpiece! Not long before this bass is done then? Side note, I don't suppose you've compared the Overwater strings to any DR Nickel strings have you? I've got Nickel DR Lo-Riders on my ACG which I love, lots of midrange but not overly bright, easy on the fingers and flexible, but they need replacing. I've always used Sunbeams on my Shuker until recently, same deal as the Lo-Riders, just slightly less bark, but it's string up with Nickel Rotos at the moment, really really not my bag, quite harsh and firm by comparison, even on the 33" scale and it's stopping me playing the damned thing!... Just wondering if the Overwaters are anything like the DRs, as the DRs are expensive to buy in the UK and it's a pain in the ass shipping them from the US. Cheers, Eude

Owain, those look amazing! Cracking work dude How's the bass settling in then? Shep, Owain is right, every home needs at least one ACG, I've personally got about 4 extra specced up, just need to work out some way to pay for them now... Eude
If I ever get some decent natural light. So, er... probably April-ish?
I know what you mean, I thought when I moved down to London I'd be in shorts all year round, it's baltic and raining like a b**tard today!
Nah, I'll see if I can dig the bounceable flash out tonight and lay it down on the bed for some proper porn shots.
Looking forward to them dude, almost too much... Eude

Very nice dude, great comparison. I personally quite like the buzz and clatter on the lower strings on the Recurve, sounds that little bit more like a Double Bass, to my ears anyway. You can definitely hear the "woodiness" of the Skelf cutting through, there must be some magic in that chambering after all. I promised to do a comparison of the Series/Parallel/Single Coil modes of the pickup on my ACG and I've failed to do so thus far, must pull the finger out sharpish! Any more pics of this lovely bass on the way? Eude
Well, it's here. All I can say is... if you thought those pictures looked good, you'd be completely floored by this bass in the flesh. It's just f***ing gorgeous. Alan is like some sort of sorcerer of wood. Can't wait to get home tonight and fire it up. I've popped it on the scales here at work, and it comes in at almost exactly 4.2 kg, which is 9 lb 4 oz. Pretty impressive for a 5er with a shedload of wenge and ebony in the neck. The body must be very light indeed. Popped it on a strap, and it balances perfectly. Having had the Skelf for a while, the neck feels familiar straight away, but I can immediately hear a subtle difference in the acoustic tone. More of a low-mid grunt, rather than the Skelf's high-mid growl. Obviously, it doesn't have the Skelf's chambered-body resonance and acoustic loudness. I'm hoping the piezo tone on the Recurve is noticeably different from the Skelf, so I've got a tonal excuse to keep both.
Brilliant news mate. I don't think you need any excuse for keeping the two basses, if you have to find something, you could use the "backup bass" excuse maybe? Eude
-
Geez, I keep coming back to perv at these pics! The whole setup balances really well with the Recurve body shape. Previously, I'd preferred some of Alan's other designs over this one, but this bass may have changed my mind. You're a lucky lad Eude

Wow! That looks incredible mate! I know it'll play and sound even better than it looks too. Alan's pulled off another blinder! You're not doing my ACG GAS any good whatsoever though. Fretless 5er, or possibly 6er in the pipeline for me, once I get a job down here in the big smoke, earn a bonus, and convince the missus... Congrats dude. Eude
And no sooner did I say that than Alan emailed me to say the bass is essentially finished. Just final setup and preamp tweaks and we're good to go!
Awesome Awesome Awesome! Are you collecting in person? It's a lovely part of the world Annoyingly, if you were and I still lived in Edinburgh, I could've popped down to say hello, unfortunately, I live a fair bit over an hour's drive away now Eude

How'd I miss this update? Looking incredible dude. New Bass Day soon then? Eude

Beautiful Bass Plays and sounds as good as it looks! Chuffed you're happy as Larry with it mate. Eude
They are indeed. It was an unforeseen addition, but required due to the radius of the fingerboard clipping into the side dots due to the massive width of the board... Thankfully Robbies eye for detail has chamfered the board edges off in a way that looks great and feels very natural. I'm actually glad the situation came up as I really do love the way it looks.
Cool It does look awesome, I bet it'll feel real nice too. I'm sure it was Jim Fleeting who told me that Carl Thomson's bass necks are one complete smooth shape with no edges, so the edge of the fingerboard is radiused into the fingerboard radius and the whole thing into the neck profile. Sounds simple, but apparently it's a real head f**k to do, but probably worth it I'm sure Eude
-
Are the fingerboard edges radiused? Looking awesome by the way. Eude
-
Well I think you made the right choice colour-wise mate. Always loved the gold top Les Pauls, but this is going to be way cooler Eude

Man that looks amazing! Top work guys! Eude
