1. so what? honestly, and I'm being serious and not wanting to be rude, but so what if you can't do something? You'll never be victor wooton/jaco pastorious/mark king or whoever - you may never have a cd in HMV. But then I probably won't either and nor will 90% of this forum. Maybe if you practice you'll be able to make those stretches, maybe not and your fingers never will work that way - but you WILL improve as a musician. Django Reinhart changed the way people played guitar and he didn't have half his fingers- maybe physically you'll never be able to do x y and z on the bass. But that doesn't stop you. Enjoy your new bass.
 2.
At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs... That sounds like you've got it in passive mode and you've not found the passive/active switch. Does one of the pots pull up, that will then make it active and the other 2 pots are your EQ. Well that's how my SS1 works. It would be a steal at £750 btw. I love mine.
the bass with the switches is a 1985 thumb bass.... so no passive mode - the active jazz pickups from seymore duncan have 3 switches on each pickup, one is the resonance of the pickup, one of the others is an eq curve... but I don't know which is which and there is also a 3rd that I don't have a clue what it's supposed to be doing!
 3. send 2x18 a message - he's got some experience with that power amp I think....
 4.
but if you not getting noticed in the mix then that a problem that starts at the beginning got nothing to do with the pa? or if you get lost in the mix could be a sound guy thinking he needs to eq your bass a certain way. the sound from your amp really does dictate the sound your going to give the pa. andy
How are you defining getting lost in the mix? I agree for some sounds like we were discussing in your other thread the amp and cab add a lot to the sounds, but for others... when I was gigging more I lost count of the number of times the PA would take the bass DI before the amp- you chat about what it should sound like if you need but otherwise I've tended to just trust the PA guy's professionalism.
 5.
it depends very much on the sound you go for, if i when't to a cleaner amp it would defiantly be noticed in the mix the sound my swr amp had in the mix was very different to my orange. andy
but you go for a clean sound... well you end up with something approaching your bass... through a DI with a bit of Eq. The current preamp I used for the first time live today is based on a console channel strip - which is great - sounds good - but... you're not going to be noticed in the mix any more or less are you. Want be be noticed in the mix pick a mid freq and boost it.....
 6.
It's a shame there aren't more customers like you. We had a gent today who came in, unlocked a guitar on the wall (ie helped himself despite 2 of us asking if he was ok or needed help etc, to which his response was a flat 'no'). He then dropped the guitar (acoustic) cracked the back, passed it to me and said 'here *passes instrument*... Sorry', walked out of the shop and so we now have to recoup the items cost despite the damage which he hasn't paid a penny for. Personally, I think it's this kind of issue that is killing the high street music shops. They can hold less stock so don't get bulk order discounts plus staffing costs and damage of stock pushes the price of instruments up and makes it so difficult to compete.
I try and avoid going at weekend too, you would like me as a customer! That fella sounds awful. I get really annoyed with how you see some stuff getting treated. guitars especially.
 7. pooh this is tempting fumps!
 8. Bass amps are a funny thing. I'm in the process of changing my rig around, and been spending a lot of time trying to work out what it is exactly that I'm after. Anyway I tend to go for a fairly clean tone. It struck me while playing today that live and in the mix the differences between different rigs isn't that massive and that if you've got PA support then half of the things that you look for in a bass rig are redundant and there's a different set of priorities. anyway just my thoughts - I took the very nice helborg preamp today into the effects return of the roland combo - honestly it sounds nicer - in the mix.... I dunno if I could tell. .... makes me think...
 9. Would I pay a small fee to try out a bass? no- put this way, it's my money in my pocket they want me to spend- and if they want me to spend it with them they'll let me try things. I do have a policy of not trying anything unless a) I'm actually looking to buy or the shop offer to let me have a go first.
 10. I would suggest that ashdown heads aren't awful - make sure the pre shape button is out (i.e. off) to get rid of the muddiness. I don't like ashdown cabs at all.
 11.
Fantastic news! I'm working on the theory that when this sells, the next one up in your originals list must be next!
I'm wondering what rick's going to replace it with!

 13. it depends what you're going for tonally. If you want the sound of a sealed cab, well you need a sealed cab. If you want valve power section... well you're going to need to have a valve power section. if you want hi-fi like full range reproduction, well a power amp into a full range speaker would be where you put your money. So it all depends!
 14. I have a roland D-bass 210 at the moment it's great, and in terms of technology a lot more high end than the genz benz combo, the cube combos aren't as powerful I think but have a fair few bells and whistles on them - like muzz says really really good gear- for some odd reason very unfashionable. I like my D-bass combo a lot, that said I do plan to be selling it in a few weeks so what do I know!
 15. I'm so lucky to have been born in the 80's!
 16.
Awesome stuff, figured out those pickup switches?
Nope! Just set them in ways that sound good. No idea what they are actually doing. Theres one that is the equivalent of rolling off the tone on a passive bass.....the other two - no idea!
 17. do either of the cabs have two sockets? if they are wired in parallel then just plug the second cab into the first as well?
 18.
The one in my avatar is a 2005 SS1. According to Warwick it's swamp ash.
it's maple, it's a nice bit of flamed maple, warwick told you wrong. If you don't believe me google what they both look like (corvette $$ tend to be swamp ash)
 19.
That's a good price. Its probably swamp ash. To my knowledge Warwick don't use maple.
err the Streamer stage one has been pretty much all maple since about 1989 before then it was maple with wenge neck, and before that wenge neck and cherry wings.
 20.
(how are you getting on with your thumb?? )
used it the first time on monday practice... honestly it's the bass sound I hear in my head, flipping amazing!
 21.
Depends on what it is really. Unfortunately, that image gives very few clues! All maple construction.....that's about it! Think you can just about see it doesn't have a brass nut so its probably a 00's bass, possibly recessed straplocks so would say 2000-2002. On that basis, I would say anywhere between £1k and £1.2k depending on it's condition, which does look good. Worth watching if you are local!
the price of them seems to yo yo about all over the place! I thought it was about that much now. I'm not going for it- honestly the wife would kill me!
 22.
Why do I find myself thinking the OP should try out a G&L Tribute L2000 (if he's wanting a Swiss Army knife, to cover all the bases, for not a lot of money)?
because you are a highly intelligent man with a lot of experience of musical instruments?
 23. How much do warwick's make at the moment? This came up on my normal ebay browsing Odd one this... one photo, local pickup only, pretty crappy advert really - might be a good deal there for someone, my wife would kill me if I accidentally won another auction for local pickup! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/warwick-streamer-stage-1-neck-thru-bass-/261376101418?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cdb3acc2a
 24. Yes, but not really You need some motor and co-ordination skills which some people have and some rant as good at. and you need to be able to listen and hear well - which some can do and some can't as well but that's where you start - and everything can be overcome with practice and just playing with other people and learning - and you'll still have your strengths and weaknesses.
