1. THE man....... IMHO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiTzD1jSXXM
2. I should really have posted this before but after taking some photos for a prospective sale, I thought I might as well put them up here. This is a very early Supernatural session. It was custom made for me in 1979, (that was John's guess anyway as is was pre serial numbers) It's the first white bass John made. Mark King saw it at the Moseley factory and ordered the infamous "Starchild bass" based on this instrument. Condition is pretty remarkable for a 35 year old bass. It has a bound neck and head stock, no Xlr (I couldn't see the point). Maple wings, (I think ..... the original order was for birds eye maple wings and headstock but I changed my mind at the last minute and went white ). Ebony fingerboard and pickup facings. Mother of pearl dots. Custom P.T.F.E. nut (handmade by John). Solid brass hex pots. Hand crafted ebony Pre-amp pots with abalone inserts. Machine heads are chrome (John and I agreed they were asthetically more pleasing than gold against white). The neck is perfectly stable with no dead spots.(I've never had to touch the truss rod). The colour is now a beautiful aged creamy white It's been to John twice in its life for a service and the last one, (could be 10 years ago?) he replaced the onboard preamp for the "new" version. I gigged with it extensively around the birmingham area from 1980 to 1985. It has a fantastic finger funk and slap tone as you'd expect from a Jaydee of this pedigree. The tragedy is I only play 5's now. Oh......... and it's called "Gandalph" I hope you like it.
3. http://italiastraps.com/new-sale-page.htm Fantastic quality and BOGOF !!
4. Another big fan! I'm off to see him tomorrow in Oswestry and then at the Robin on the 3rd Nov. As usual with Frank, it'll either be laclustre or totally wonderful. Massively talented.
5. I'd say there's definitely some chorus going on.
6. I suffer with this problem and AFAIK it's due to the plucking finger "following through" onto the next string and pressing it onto the frets. Rounds clank, flats thump. I've tried for ages to change my right hand finger style to be less aggressive and pluck more across the string rather than down and through but when I get exited I just revert back to bad technique. I suppose I could force the issue by turning up loud and having to play gently but it's just not me. Any other tips on how to overcome this?
7. What a fantastic player this man is. Such an inspiration :)
8. Avalon U5 is, I suppose, the industry standard. But £500 ish new
9. I bought Ians J-Retro last week . A fast, easy transaction. Posted quickly and packaged up great. Buy with confidence
10.
They're two expensive bits of kit - I know it sounds like you're chickening out, but have you considered getting a local (more experienced) BC'er to have a look for you?
Good news! I was talking to the guitarist in the band and his brother works at an electronics switchgear company soldering for a living. He'll do it for me for nowt Thanks for all the advice though guys, I think I'm going to learn how for the next time. Hopefully this thread will be helpful to others in my situation in the future.
11. I've just received a J-retro from dodge bass and I'm going to fit it to my Lakland JO tomorrow night. Now I understand the new pre is "easy to fit" with screw fixings for the pickup wires, but I'll need to desolder the pots and the ground wire. I've never soldered or desoldered anything in my life. I've borrowed an old weller soldering "gun" which I think is rated at 100w. I don't want to ruin the pots or leave a mess in case I want to reinstall the passive electronics. Any tips for a first timer ?
12. Sounds like I'm back on a diet then What's the betting I'll lose the weight and they'll say it's made me look old and haggard !
13.
A hat is only OK if your not 6'2"and 18 stone. while the rest are only 5'6 and skinny.
Ha Ha ,you guessed it. I'm 6' 1" and 17 stone and the rest are all 5' 8"ish and skinny.
14. "And play the bass - that makes you cool all on its' own" I've got to agree with that
15.
Wear one or more of the following: a hat a skull ring sunglasses a ZZ Top beard : D
I've tried the hat and sunglasses. Made me feel a pratt .............
16. I'm bald, fat , 52, currently in a good covers band, and I've been made aware that I can be quite capable of moving in a somewhat dated, "Dad dancing" style on stage............. Think 80's Whilst trying to humor my rather younger band mates in their 20's and 30's. I've resorted to trying desperately not to look to "uncool" by remaining rather static. Now I'm looking "Bored" or uninvolved" Any tips on how to remain cool looking in ones' latter years ? I'm sure It's hard for them, playing in a band with someone old enough to be their dad. I know it's hard for me playing with a group of guys 20+ years younger than me. And yes, I'm being quite serious here, I really need some help.

Just bought a JO5 off Simon. Great bloke, great bass, buy or sell with confidence Cheers Bud
18. No, I haven't. But if I want to buy or sell on this forum I want to do it with the confidence that comes from knowing that people on here act with respect to each other. I think what you did was disrespectful to the buyer who offered the asking price.
19. "This is just ridiculous. For a start I cannot believe how much Jon underprices his instruments....BUT £400 for a luthier built bass of this quality is INSANE!!!" I wonder how much It's going to be up for sale for next.........................................
20. I set my warwick passive, with a nice growly middle for finger funk, and active, with bass and treble boosted a bit and middle cut completely for slap and a more aggressive sound if I need it. No fiddling with the amp, I just push/pull a pot. Surely this is what active electronics were designed for, to make switching between sounds easier ?
21.
See what you can source second-hand?
+1
22. Alex just bought my Aguilar DB 924 . Instant payment and great comms. Don't hesitate Simon.
