2.
Yeah...that happens What two tunes have you learnt and what parts-melody?,walking over the changes?
I've learnt "So what" and "Maiden voyage", with a walking bass line for most of the former (obviously ) and eyes closed and concentrate on the rhythm for Maiden voyage. Both very fullfilling. Found a liking for Bill evans on spotify tonight as well.
  3. Well, I must admit it. Even though i didn't think it would happen........................................................ ..................................................................... it seems........... i'm starting to............................. rather... um.... like................................................................................................ .......................... jazz Is this normal?? I've only learnt 2 songs.
  4.
Sorry,I think I've confused you a bit there...When I say 'Rhythm Changes',I was referring to a common set of chord changes that are based on the chords to the time 'I Got Rhythm',and are used for a large number of tunes-'Oleo' and 'The Flintstones' being just two. These changes are almost as common in jazz as blues changes are.
I understood what you mean't Doddy, it was just my feeble attempt at trying to be funny.
  5.
oh and plenty of pros lose the form in a tune like so what... it usually depends on how good the soloist is at pointing out the form with their improvisation.
I must admit to being a little worried about getting lost, but if i concentrate on Doddy's advice and listen to the rythmn changes, if it goes a bit wrong I'll just stay calm look confident and half the punters will think the others angst means they've cocked up not me!!
  6. Who would've thought it. I've just learn't the first part of "So what" including a walking bassline. Until the chord changes threw me off! I'm really enjoying my first try at jazz. It took me 2hrs to get the first 2 mins though. Loving it. Thanks to you guys for helping me out. My voyage of discovery continues.
  7. Spotify here I come!!
  8. I've recently been approached by a few Jazz dudes who are performing at an outdoor gig to do a 1/2 set with them. Without thinking i said yes only to realise that my "by ear" approach might not work too well in a jazz set. I'm hoping someone here might point me in the right direction as far as recommending some fairly simple (perferably repetitive) songs. I don't read the dots or Tab. The line up is Bass, Drums, Piano,Trumpet and Sax. Cheers in advance.
  9. Sounds great to me! Simon Davies.
  10. Just recieved an EBS octabass from Denver. Super fast delivery, pedal in great condition. Recommended
  11. I couldn't do it . I tried, but I couldn't.
  12. Not any more..........
  13.
Well i think i've had enough of fannying about and looking for the newest best thing, as that there was when i was happy with my tone and sound and everything.
GAS, driven by the "Grass is greener on the other side" syndrome can cause us to make odd choices. In the early 80's I had a peavey rig that sounded great, but chopped it for a trace elliot rig, then subsequently spent the next 2 years quietly reggretting it.
  14. I've noticed rather a lot of posts recently expressing love for Warwicks past or present. lots of people seem to regret "moving on" from that Warwick tone and crave to get it back Are they still "unfashionable" or are we about to see a resurgence of Warwick Luurrvvee......
  15.
Is it normal for the machine heads to look so dull and oxidised in a Fender of this age? Or is that some kind of "custom finish"?
My 74 jazz has this same "aged" oxidation of the machine heads. Must be normal for this period I suppose.
  16. I've played (chronologically) a Shergold marathon, a Fender Jazz 73, a JD supernatural session 1980 and i recently acquired a Warwick streamer stage II 5 string. I still own the JD and the Fender but only play the Warwick. The tone is just awesome. It plays beautifully and the build quality is good. The only thing I don't like is having to wax it. I know they're unfashioable at the moment but surely that means now is the time to buy. I can't recommend this bass enough ( if you can find one secondhand, as new prices are ridiculous)
  17.
Based on the clip in the OP, I'm very glad he wasn't. FoF usually has a lovely understated groove which Mr. Wetton manages to drown in noodling.
A classic case of overplaying and totally missing the point of the song. It's great to see the likes of JW doing what I'm still trying not to do, after 30 years of playing ... (OK overplaying)
  18. "I guess if you were in your mother's womb in the 1980s, music would have sounded like Everything Everything." Unfortunately I was in my mothers womb in the 50s.
  19.
I'm not a Jamiroquai fan, but quite liked that song from the Godzilla soundtrack. I thought the reworked version was nice and chunky, but was missing a lot of the menace of the original because the bass sound was too clean - needed some fuzz and synth. Undoubtedly a good bass player, but he looked so lifeless too.
My wife seemed quite enamoured with Paul Turner, I seem to recall her commenting along the lines of " Who's that bass player, he's a bit tasty" I of course replied "What? Do you mean his playing?" She smiled. He'd better address the good looking thing soon, or he'll be out of a job One can't be seen to be competeing in the centre of attention stakes now can one?
  20.
Just watched them and must admit the new song's a bit bland, loved the re-worked Deeper underground though. I was saying to my wife that so much stuff's been done before that it's all a bit samey. Then Everything Everything came on and it was fresh , different and exiting. I'm listening to the album "Man alive" on spotify as I type. Reminds me of a cross between It Bites and Thomas Dolby............ Really rather good
I take back my "It Bites" quote after listening to the album

To try that is . Can anyone help me out regards what model this is? Neck feel/width etc? and if they suffer any issues? Status basses are a bit of a mystery to me.

It's people like Si who make this place what it is, a great online community. His posts made me laugh many times and he was obviously a real gent, always ready to help people out. He'll be sadly missed, whether you're a frequent poster, or more of a lurker like me. (another) Si,

  25.
i dont think i have ever seen a guy play the bass like this guy can...hes a magician...IMO there is nothing that is not good about Sharay's playing...solid sh*t with fills that just take ur breath away...the more i hear this guy play the more i think he is the best in the pocket player in the world... Utterly awesome feel. Ever since I watched the youtube link to the live worhip in chicago, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_KuD0AjWdE I've been hooked. From what I can gather he's a very modest guy who's driven by his religious beliefs, otherwise I think we'd've heard much more of him. He's my main inspiration to learn and improve as a player. God Bless him!!
