Warwick - Give me the good, the bad and the ugly.
morsefull replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
I wonder how many people regret moving on from Warwick as they became "unfashionable". I've owned a 5 string streamer stage 2 now for about 2 years ( traded with Ray on here) and for me, nothing comes close for tone and playability. It's awesome live and in the studio. I own or have owned a vintage Fender Jazz (1974), a Jaydee supernatural session (1980), a stingray (Pre EB) and played loads of other basses. Since getting the Warwick I've been totally GAS free. I've got a feeling people will be coming back to Warwick again in the future and used prices will pick up , especially the high end. (and no, mine's not up for sale!) Talking about used prices I posted this on the Ebay links thread a few days ago. "Is it me, or are things starting to get really tight http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:B:WNA:GB:1123 I thought this would sell for at least £200 more." A nice example of a vintage fretless streamer sold for £511. It just shows what can happen when the market turns. My advise is to buy yourself a high end used warwick while they're cheap. -
The reason I was so amazed is that having owned a SS1, I know what awesome basses they are. It's a good job I'm GAS free or I'd have been bidding the price up.

This is a great youtube cover, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_KKrmUzhyY&NR=1 It really helped me with my fingering. Fabulous technique,so smooth it's almost effortless.
Tried the Hi-Beams but i don't like the feel and tension, and they seem to lack the bottom end of the Black Beauties which I'm going back to. Lovely strings.
Silddx, I don't post here much but visit frequently and I seem to agree with you rather a lot. Hence, since I value your opinion, I've just ordered a set of Black beauties for my SS II 5 string Cheers.

Does it only happen when you fret 2 strings? Let's say"C" on the A string and "G" on the E string. Sometimes when you play the C then your finger follows through on to the muted (on the 3rd or G fret) E string, pressing it down onto the fret and making a distinctive "click". I suffer with this quite a lot and either have to use very gentle right hand technique or avoid double fretting.
Get a used SSII
Best thing I ever did! Just an awesome sound and playability too . It keeps me up at night it's that good.

That'll be fine. Until you find youself picking out the bass lines in every song you hear

Ive got a 74 Jazz, a very early JD supernatural session, and a Streamer Stage II 5 . After 30 years of playing I've been totally blown away by the Warwick. The Tone is ................addictive. The neck is obviously going to be "chunkier" than both my other basses but I found it's sound so jaw dopping that I made myself get used to it. It took about 3 weeks. Balance is really good, and it sounds so good in the studio I never think about recording with anything else. Check on here and the warwick forums to see if there's a stage II for sale reasonably close to you and give one a try!! If you can't find anything close then wait. yes they're that good. But then again, I haven't played a stingray since 1983

As far as feel, great timing and improvisation is concerned,I think Sharay Reed is hard to fault; eg, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcvr3zAhg He remains a constant inspiration to me when I get dispondant with my playing.

As your student I shouldn't really say this , but what you play from 4:23 to 4:40 is a bit special.......................... .................................everything else is crap though

Just bought "The improvisors bass method" from Joe. It's my first purchase here and it went faultlessly. Great comms and I saved £9 on the new price so I'm very happy. I got all exited when the postman came................... How childish.

I had my first lesson with Steve today and really enjoyed it. He's easy going and certainly Knows his stuff. I felt both challenged and inspired to learn. Let's hope this is the start of a new chapter in my bass life .
The standard nut is white plastic I think, the brass roller nut has two tiny ball bearings inset into it in the slot for the G string - I used to own Mark King's red JD (the one on the Live at Wembley dvd) and that had such a nut - nice for doing the string bends behind the nut!
My mark 1 has a plastic nut but not "any old plastic". It's PTFE, which is what they coat non stick pans with. VERY slippery! John can be quite a high tech guy

I just took the plunge and booked my first lesson with Steve.( I thought it was about time I learned about what I've been doing. ) A big step for me as I've been playing on and off for 30 years. I must say I'm rather looking forward to it.
I would, but there's no steering wheel at the back of the minbus.
How the other half live!
I've been thinking about buying one of these: http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl...icker%26hl%3Den On longer journeys to gigs I reckon I could be warmed up by the time I get there. Anyone tried/tested/bought one of these?
Why not do what we all do, and play along on the steering wheel whilst "inadvertently" tapping out drum pattens occasionally during song.

I'm considering the whole issue of in ear monitoring after our church received a complaint about noise levels last Sunday. Although I have to say I would want control over headphone volumes myself. I won't trust my precious hearing to the sound guy I'm presently using an old Ashdoiwn ABM C115 combo as a monitor. Angled back on a stand, facing stage back and DI'd to FOH.

Warwick have changed the shape of their standard neck this year
morsefull replied to peted's topic in Bass Guitars
What! 20 posts and nothing from Warwicksell?............................... er I mean hunt. -
I own streamer stage II 5 and can honestly say it's awesome. In terms of tone and playability i've not found anything to touch it It's also great in the studio, with great warmth without sacrificing presence . Totally recommended.

CS Warwick Thumb NT 5 String - Trans Red
morsefull replied to Dubs's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Hasn't this been "beheaded"? It'd definitely put me off especially as the luthier who repaired the break is in the U.S. He's quoted as saying"the neck will never break in that spot again because of the strength of the epoxy he uses". Maybe, but too much risk methinks
