Preamp for IEM option paralysis... please help!
Killerfridge replied to Jackopie1's topic in Effects
I know you mentioned the Sansamp was a bit "grindy", but have you tried the VTBass? I use that currently for my IEMs and that gives me a nice fat warm sound. There is also the Two Notes Revolt Bass which I absolutely love the look and sound of. And as Boodang said, the SpectraDrive is great (assuming it has essentially the same circuitry as the old RH amp heads, or at least can sound like them). -
I hear it as the difference between a P (Stingray) and a J (Bongo). The Stingray sits in the mix, whilst the Bongo more punchy and wants to push through the mix into your ears!. I'll upload a couple of clips compared to a (fretless) Stingray. Whilst not a true comparison it gives a good idea of the sound profile!

The figuring on that Thumb is beautiful. Also your playing, but mostly the Thumb

Have I Made A Mistake? The Great Conundrum...
Killerfridge replied to binky_bass's topic in Bass Guitars
What an absolute beauty of a Bongo, and they sound absolutely incredible (I should know, currently have a 5 string for sale on the marketplace wink wink). The only sellers remorse I've had was a Stingray 5 HH that I wish I still had. It's not remorse as such, I just wish I'd kept it a bit longer than the 3 months before I traded it for something more special! -
**SOLD/TRADED** I said I would never sell this monster, but the time has come to admit that I just prefer the sound of a Stingray, and I'm fed up of switching the fretless neck out on my 4 string! Here we have my session bass that has for the past 10 years mostly been used in studio or pit, having only made it to the stage once or twice; my 2004 Music Man Bongo 5HH in stunning Lava Pearl. It cuts through the mix like nothing else, and the 4 band preamp is just nuts. It has a couple of small marks, including the customary chip on the headstock, but nothing that you'd notice unless you looked closely (all pictured for full disclosure). **EDIT** - I've just noticed a couple of extra nicks on the body that weren't originally pictured. As such I'm dropping the sale price by £100 as it's only fair. Pictures showing the dings will be added soon, but they are both on the back/underside of the body, so pretty unnoticeable unless you go hunting for them **EDIT** It has action so low it plays itself if you look too hard at it, and is probably the easiest instrument to play I've ever had the joy of encountering. Last time it went live (link corrected): Some home recording too: Serial number details: Serial #F10925 ManufacturedNovember 5th, 2004 Build Code162-29-22-01-00-CR ModelBongo 5 HH ColorLava Pearl NeckRosewood Painted Bong PickguardBlack Pickguard Bongo 5 HardwareChrome Hardware It comes with the generic hard case (no official MusicMan one unfortunately) + shipping. Preferably I would be looking to trade for a Stingray 5 (Special, Piezo, H, HH, I'd consider any variation) but if you've got something interesting I'll hear any offer!

I pulled this one from the archives, but I found a video of an old band I was in playing Travelling Without Moving:

There is an argument that the frets vibration would be affected by the wood they are embedded in, but surely this would be too small to be discernible (in my opinion) compared to all the other variables that make up the sound. Hell, I don't know why one wouldn't consider something like "room humidity" to be a important variable to sound!

I've just changed the pickup height on my Thumb BO to the "Warwick recommended" height, and it feels like a different instrument. They had sunk over time as the springs had been replaced with foam, so were really low down. Other than volume, it feels more responsive? It's probably psychological, but I am so happy
