1.
+1 Jaco would agree as well, and Tower of Power would sound very different if Jerry hadn't been about. Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Loy55z4GpA Not only does Jerry have cool in spades, he's playing with Bernard Purdie, Cornell Dupree and King Curtis. Makes my heart beat faster!
Cheers for that Scalpy - fantastic
2. Stunning, and they don't make tort like they used to
3. +1 on the Chartbusters CDs (no 5 is my favourite) Also, Stevie Wonder's "Signed Sealed Delivered" album is pure gold from start to finish, with superb bass from both Jamerson and Babbett
4. Clarky - really loving the Rattlin Bone music on MySpace Bit far for me (not to mention it's my anniversary that night) but will look out to see if future gigs coincide with one of my trips to London
5.
Depends how much attention you want. I want a lot so I make sure I get it by wear daft clothes and dancing like a twat
Not to mention day-glo strings!
6. That's a really nice slap bass sound. I'll do my usual defense of the lowly Marlin Sidewinder - my first bass and served me well for many gigs and even some recordings. Has a mother of pearl fish on the 12th and P/MM style pickups
7. I swapped out some 6550s (EH) for KT88s (JJ) and never looked back. I won't go into all the cliches describing the sound, but suffice to say I love the KT88 tone. The KT88s have a bit more headroom too, which is something I welcomed on my 100w amp, as I could squeeze a bit more volume out of it. Not tried the shuguang ones - maybe I'll give them a go when the JJs die - thanks for the tip Umph
8.
This and the similar sentiments expressed by others in the thread surprises me. From my perspective, these instruments are tools and I would no more consider the visual aesthetics of a bass than I would those of a screwdriver. In most musical situations, the instrument will be heard far more than it will be seen. I own several instruments that played and sounded great, but I did not initially like the look of. Over time their appearance grew on me. My Black & Decker powered screwdriver looks crap as well. Jennifer
You should see my chisels! Beautiful. When I'm making furniture, there are three criteria, in order of importance: -Does it do what it's supposed to do? -Does it fit in well with the human body? ie ergonomics -Does it look good? Looks are not the most important thing, but I reckon there are enough high end instruments out there to enable you to love the sound, feel and look of at least one of them.
9.
Robbo and his Warlocks are a lovely bunch of guys who are really supporting live music. They will look after you AND your gear and you will have a great time. Money depends on your pulling power andhow many times you've been in/proven yourself...
Cheers for the replies. We've now committed to doing the gig. To be fair, the money was offered on the strength of a phone call, so can't expect too much! They said that if it goes down well, the fee would go up in future. I'm really looking forward to it now - nothing better than a good sound AND an enthusiastic crowd. Let's hope they like Bowie!
10. Yes. Have to keep relogging in All avatars had disappeared Some entire sections such as Off Topic had disappeared
11.
Anyone got any sugggestions for a bass which plays like this but isn't a Warwick? (now there's a long shot)
Warwick have a couple of Gibson copies - the Jack Bruce one and the Star. Need to save your pennies, though! Aesthetics are a big part of loving your bass. It could be a superbly built, immense sounding bass, but if it looks wrong, you'll never feel totally comfortable playing it.
12. Is Leeds too far? http://www.scottdevinemusic.com/live/ He's on BC too
13. If this is a 78 P census, mine has the 'made in usa' on the headstock
14. I had the same problems. I recently discovered Dropbox. Once signed up, upload the file to the public folder, then right click 'copy public link' and paste that bad boy into the thread.
15. I can't get the file either. For what it's worth, imo you come across as being totally upfront about the bass and its origins - not pulling the wool over anyone's eyes. It looks great, and real value for money. Good Luck.
16. Thanks for the replies. We seem to be getting a lot of biker venues for some reason - one next week in Coalville and a biker festival in the summer. Anyway, I think it would be worth the trip; if the sound is good and there's an enthusiastic crowd, I'm sold!
17. Some of the funkiest hip hop I've ever heard 'Slicker than most' by Guru
18. We've been offered a gig at Yardbirds Rock Club, Grimsby It's quite a distance to travel for not a huge amount of money, but have been assured it's a cracking venue and worth the journey. Anyone had experience of this place?
19. OK - enough of the deluge of posts! We've pulled out altogether, so dep no longer needed.
20.
Has anyone considered Andy Fraser from FREE?- Very underestimated IMHO
Totally agree LB, IMO he's very influenced by Jamerson and the like, and brilliantly transplants that style into rock with a lovely distinctive tone too. Jerry Jemmott is another favourite of mine. Perhaps not as technical or intricate as some others, but his sense of timing and groove really do it for me.
21. Cheers for the kind words Lord S, it was a really fun band while it lasted. The vocals were never my favourite part of the band, but he made up for it by being a great trumpet player. I know what you mean about Jay Kay - for me that style is very Labi Siffre - and very hard to do well.
22. Hopefully sorted now. Sorry - I'm a bit of a novice at uploading etc.
