1. Nottingham-based guys as follows: Valves: John Chambers (Champ Electronics) http://www.chambonino.com/ Solid State: John Wood (his contact details are on the above website homepage) If it's hybred, I guess contact one of them to see who would be best suited to sort you out. I can vouch for JC, and am one of the many testimonials on his site. Regarding JW, see below quote from JC's site: "I don't personally enjoy working on solid state equipment, although I am very capable of doing that type of work. Really, I'm a valve man! (or should that be tube man?) However, my friend in Nottingham, John Wood, does like to get involved with transistors and such-like. He also carries out a lot of work re-winding or building transformers from new. In fact, I am one of his best customers when I don't have time to build a new transformer myself!" Hope this helps
2. Ah, ok So no matter how much signal you pump into the little rascal, it will 'limit' the signal that goes into the power amp? How annoying. Can it be bypassed, or can you 'raise the ceiling' a bit?
3. I'm by no means an expert, but my theory is as follows: The single volume control you mention acts as the 'master volume' ie only controls the output volume The input is set at an optimum level. The input of your bass, therefore, is of crucial importance as you'd need to crank your bass volume to overdrive the preamp. Also, I find that the real grit comes from driving both pre and power amps, so you may well need to turn both the bass and amp up. I'd liken it to a stereo, where there is no gain control, and the input stage is set to 'average CD output' level, and the volume control is for output only. I could be wrong, and won't be surprised if the more techie types come up with a more convincing theory!
4. I don't feel I need five. I understand it's about more than getting to those lower notes, it's also about the ease of access to the notes you want all the way up the fretboard. When reading a similar thread in the past, I was struck by the words of the wise and diplomatic BurritoBass, something along the lines of "I like the limitations that four strings place on your playing"
5.
I don't think 99% of people would know if you were playing a Jazz or a Ray. I do think however that at least 75% of people will think the band sounds better as a whole if the gear's right, especially with bass where a bad tone will make the band sound either thin or muddy.
+1
6. Was browsing the web and came across myself on You Tube! I feel famous and defiled at the same time. It was a first and last gig - great singer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEa_wbBBIgU...feature=related
7.
First one, prearloid too Las Vegas, C&W for me. But before that you need to straighten out the bridge and pickups which have gone a bit skewiff
+1 and I'm not a fan of the frets, either ...I'll get me coat
8.
I think my T-40 weighs about 11lb or so. I don't actually like basses that are too light as they make me stoop!
How would a light bass make you stoop?
9. I just got silence when clicking on it - maybe I'm doing something wrong? Feedback so far - everything is WAY too low in the mix
10. Great song, Great video. Average overall = Great
11. Hi, Sounds good - nice one. It's a pretty good mix instrumentally, and a good song. I find the vocals a bit quiet in the mix, perhaps this is on purpose?
12. A crack can zig zag a bit along (and slightly across) the grain. Like the other posters, it looks like the truss rod is pushing on the skunk strip (a new term to me, thanks Nigel) You could get a new neck, but resale would plummet, so I'd go for the refund. note - I'm not a luthier, but work with wood every day and know it intimately. Well.....not THAT intimately!
13. Ouch! I notice the word 'had' Did the weight adversely affect the resale value? I sometimes wonder about that with mine. When I bought it, I didn't even think to consider the weight, I just picked it up, played it, loved it and bought it.
14. I was flicking through an old BGM and was reading about the Yamaha BB1024x, which apparently weighs 12kg/26lb (I assume it should be 12lbs, either that or the bridge is made from dark matter) Mine (78P) is a healthy 11ish lbs - hefty, but feels fine to me. No back problems yet after ten years, but I'm 15st and 6'1" myself, so maybe we're a good match. Anyone play a real backbreaker? note: I am aware that some people have had real problems with their backs due to heavy instruments, and I don't mean to make light of your pain (npi)
15. If anyone fancies a bit of glam rock, check us out tomorrow night. It's a good live venue and always has a good atmosphere. Cheers, http://greyhoundbeeston.co.uk/Greyhound/Gig_Guide.html
16.
Me rocking the EBS HD350 & Neo 212 at a gig last weekend! Great rig.
How did the gig go? The Maze is a good venue, but I couldn't make it. I would be interested in coming to check out your pedal madness in future.
17. If I were ever to convert to the wonky side, a Super J would be the one. What a stunner!
18.
I really love Squarepusher, but not really for his bass playing as much as his music that he produces. That said he's clearly a good player!
+1 Not too fond of his bass tone, but musically I love almost everything he does, ever since I happened upon the 'Budakhan Mindphone' ep in '99. He's the only artist where I make the effort to buy all of his new releases. Great live too From a bass player's perspective, an interesting track is 'The Modern Bass Guitar' from the album 'Hello Everything' - I think it's bass guitar given the mental midi Squarepusher treatment, and the results are superb imo He produces truly original music - a rare thing these days
19. I've never been a fan of the 'mwah' of the fretless, but like some other aspects: For spaced out sliding harmonics, something a bit different, I like this clip from a fellow BCer; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMFQGYcnL-I...player_embedded I also like the percussive funkiness that the decreased sustain of a fretless can help provide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F4j2SacgN4 Gary Willis is the daddy btw - I saw Alain Caron playing with Mike Stern a few years back, and thoroughly enjoyed his playing
20. I think aesthetics are very important to many people. I have no doubt they are great instruments, and beautiful to many. Personally, however, I don't like the look of 'modern' looking basses (except for a perverse attraction towards the Pedulla Buzz). The only Warwicks I've seen that I like the look of are the Star and the Jack Bruce EB3 one, and even then I'd prefer the Gibson versions. I know it's illogical to choose form over function, but that's human nature sometimes. edit: remembered another one I like - the Fortress Flashback
21. Been appreciating the Specials' Horace Panter today
22.
http://www.bravewoodguitars.co.uk/
I gathered incorrectly! I wasn't being lazy - somehow my original search (pre posting) brought up a page where an existing bass was refinished in distressed Olympic White. Must have gotten confused. Thanks for the clarification.
23. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Bravewood. From what I can gather, this is a later Fender P which has been 'restored' to look like it's a '63? It looks lovely. Do Bravewood just distress the body, or overhaul the entire thing? - what is the actual year?
24. I notice from his Resume that he's an inventor too.
