1. I know what you mean Doddy. IMO a signature bass should be their tried and tested bass, and it seems a bit rude and insincere to then change brands. Mark King: There was an article in BGM about how hard Ashdown had worked to get the perfect amp for the Mark King signature, only to read the next month that he's gone on tour with a TC rig! Flea: He went from playing a Stingray for years to suddenly bringing out a signature Modulus, then going down the vintage Jazz route. There are other players where I'm a bit cynical about their motives. Of course, everyone has the right to try new stuff and switch brands, but IMO putting out a signature bass should mean "this is my go-to bass, it's a major part of my sound and has helped make me the player I am today" rather than "I quite like this one at the moment"
2. Play! Experiment! Try a smiley (mid scoop, bass & treble boost) EQ setting and then a frowny (mid up, bass & treble down) EQ setting* Play with fingers and a pick. Play with flats and rounds. Play a vintage bass and a modern one. Play a valve amp and a SS amp. Mute with palm/foam. Play near the bridge and near the neck. Play soft and hard. Some would argue that the material used for the nut, body, fretboard etc. has a significant effect on sound. Try many combinations of the above till you eventually (hopefully) hone in on your perfect tone. This will take several years and much money. *For eq, what sounds great in your bedroom at low volume may get totally lost in a band setting.
3. Red one = nice Blue one = pimp ass daddy groovetastic Which one reflects your personality best?
4. I needed to have a driver replaced for a CXL 110 and just dealt with the UK retailer (it was Chris May/Overwater in Carlisle, but not sure if they are still EA dealers, or indeed amp retailers) They seemed to have all of the spare parts needed to be able to repair any EA problems in the UK. Perhaps try a EA authorised dealer in the UK.
5. I don't think you'll be able to get a standard Jag body from Warmouth, let alone a five string one
6. It's useful for a variety of purposes - check out the reviews. (sorry to those who have seen this before on BC)
7. "All I look for is simplicity and truth" I like that
8.
I have what I believe was one of those. Has Fender in solid black on the headstock and a previous owner has removed the tiny 'squier by fender' decal. I bought it as a wreck thinking it was a genuine Fender, and it's served me well over the years. I has a veneer rosewood board, and is really due a refret sometime soon.
Hi AM, is it really veneer?! How thick is the rosewood?
9. Plenty of room to lay a cable
10.
does anyone know if this is a good sounding amp?
I never really got on with mine. The 'Aural Enhancer' didn't really do anything, and although the tone was always fine, I found it to be a tad woolly (mostly played a Stingray 2EQ through it) There were some differences to yours - mine did not have the SWR logo on the centre of the speaker, and the model was spelt 'Bassic Black' IIRC
11. I don't like lager. Can anyone recommend a bitter that has these free straplocks on them?
12. I love pigeon holing music - it's a rocksteady song given the dub treatment
13.
I use a 125 watt Vox V125b valve amp and its very loud, clean and will compete with a drummer with no problems. Wattage is a strange thing, Valve watts SEEM louder than solid state and you need four times the wattage to go twice as loud. For example.... if you take my 125 watt head and want something twice as loud you will need 500 watts. Best thing to do is get a very sensitive cab, something around 100db and run it with lowish power.
I'd agree with that. My 100w valve amp is as loud as my old EA i Amp 350 was
14. Hi, I used to have one of these. In terms of value, I bought mine new from the bass centre in 1999 for something like £549, and sold it for £220 a few years later. Guy got a bargain!
15. Hey, we're playing at the Rock'n'Bike festival too Will make sure I catch your set and say Hi
16.
correct me if i'm wrong. This an audition to play in a festival that they charge £58 and £33 for day tickets to the punters and the band get F*ck all. I have two words for that :-)
Two words that rhyme with 'duck fat'? From Doddy's reply above, it seems they pay decent money for bigger bands, but seem to take advantage of less established bands
17.
There has been a really interesting series of articles on this topic in BGM recently - called something like "But this one goes to 11". Worth checking out as it will definitely inform your choices. If you don't buy it PM me and I'll scan and e-mail them for you.
These articles are online on the Barefaced Bass site, courtesy of Alex C
18.
I think a lot of stuff from China & Indonesia is really good these days. Some players will turn their noses up because it's not USA made leaving great bargains for the rest of us. I played a great Aria Mosrite copy recently and I am also thinking of the cheap Hofner stuff that comes from China
Hey BB, Was the Aria you tried the DMB? I really like the look of it, and for £185, looks a bargain
19. As well as watts, number/size of speakers is important. I've had a 350watt 1x10 combo in the past which struggled to be heard. I reckon 200W plus through a 4x10 would be fine
20.
We've got an audition. A Tuesday night @ 11pm!
Good Luck - hope it all goes smoothly.
21. It's the first MB head I've liked the look of - probably because I can't stand the yellow! For heads with valve preamps, it would be interesting to a/b/c a digital poweramp (eg. Terror), the Tube Emulator (TTE) and a valve poweramp (AD200)
22.
Bah... no Rebel Rebel @ Glastonbudget! Was looking forward to it...
It is a shame, BJ - are you guys playing there?
23.
Was this festival by any chance "Glastonbudget" ? You can PM me if you want but we had exactly the same experience.
Yup - I snuck the link into the OP - interested to hear your experiences - will PM you
