I swapped out some 6550s (EH) for KT88s (JJ) and never looked back. I won't go into all the cliches describing the sound, but suffice to say I love the KT88 tone. The KT88s have a bit more headroom too, which is something I welcomed on my 100w amp, as I could squeeze a bit more volume out of it. Not tried the shuguang ones - maybe I'll give them a go when the JJs die - thanks for the tip Umph
This and the similar sentiments expressed by others in the thread surprises me. From my perspective, these instruments are tools and I would no more consider the visual aesthetics of a bass than I would those of a screwdriver. In most musical situations, the instrument will be heard far more than it will be seen. I own several instruments that played and sounded great, but I did not initially like the look of. Over time their appearance grew on me. My Black & Decker powered screwdriver looks crap as well. Jennifer
You should see my chisels! Beautiful. When I'm making furniture, there are three criteria, in order of importance: -Does it do what it's supposed to do? -Does it fit in well with the human body? ie ergonomics -Does it look good? Looks are not the most important thing, but I reckon there are enough high end instruments out there to enable you to love the sound, feel and look of at least one of them.
Robbo and his Warlocks are a lovely bunch of guys who are really supporting live music. They will look after you AND your gear and you will have a great time. Money depends on your pulling power andhow many times you've been in/proven yourself...
Cheers for the replies. We've now committed to doing the gig. To be fair, the money was offered on the strength of a phone call, so can't expect too much! They said that if it goes down well, the fee would go up in future. I'm really looking forward to it now - nothing better than a good sound AND an enthusiastic crowd. Let's hope they like Bowie!

Has anyone else had trouble with Basschat tonight?
Roland Rock replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Site News
Anyone got any sugggestions for a bass which plays like this but isn't a Warwick? (now there's a long shot)
Warwick have a couple of Gibson copies - the Jack Bruce one and the Star. Need to save your pennies, though! Aesthetics are a big part of loving your bass. It could be a superbly built, immense sounding bass, but if it looks wrong, you'll never feel totally comfortable playing it.

Is Leeds too far? http://www.scottdevinemusic.com/live/ He's on BC too

Thanks for the replies. We seem to be getting a lot of biker venues for some reason - one next week in Coalville and a biker festival in the summer. Anyway, I think it would be worth the trip; if the sound is good and there's an enthusiastic crowd, I'm sold!

Some of the funkiest hip hop I've ever heard 'Slicker than most' by Guru

We've been offered a gig at Yardbirds Rock Club, Grimsby It's quite a distance to travel for not a huge amount of money, but have been assured it's a cracking venue and worth the journey. Anyone had experience of this place?

OK - enough of the deluge of posts! We've pulled out altogether, so dep no longer needed.
Has anyone considered Andy Fraser from FREE?- Very underestimated IMHO
Totally agree LB, IMO he's very influenced by Jamerson and the like, and brilliantly transplants that style into rock with a lovely distinctive tone too. Jerry Jemmott is another favourite of mine. Perhaps not as technical or intricate as some others, but his sense of timing and groove really do it for me.

Cheers for the kind words Lord S, it was a really fun band while it lasted. The vocals were never my favourite part of the band, but he made up for it by being a great trumpet player. I know what you mean about Jay Kay - for me that style is very Labi Siffre - and very hard to do well.

Hopefully sorted now. Sorry - I'm a bit of a novice at uploading etc.

I dug this track out from an old band. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold the MuTron

Some really cool relicing you've done there mate
Roland Rock replied to Soloshchenko's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The body has been relic'd (aged) to emulate the wear and tear from many years of playing. I screwed up. Badly. The relicing is very unique to this body and not a generic pattern. You won't see another one as bad as this in a hurry. There a lot of chips round the sides of the body, and marks on the back, but this is all part of the relicing. It's supposed to look like that. No, really, honest it is. The wear marks on the front of the bass are quite deep in that they go into the wood a little, and not just the laquer. Those Dremel grinders are right little bastards to control, aren't they?
-
As Chris2112 says, it could be to with the nature of the company. I believe they're made in the US and you can only buy them direct from the company, ie no authorised distributors. Keeps overheads down, but that approach also seems to diminish the prestige factor. It might make things a bit harder to market overseas.

Lovely! I'm still obsessing over the '59 in the Gallery. Flame maple neck mmmmmmmmmm

*** Warwick Streamer LX 4 Electric Bass Guitar ***
Roland Rock replied to REDLAWMAN's topic in Basses For Sale
Yes, German LX. AAA Flamed Maple, but this one is spalted AND quilted!
Hi, Lovely bass, the wood is stunning. On a pedantic note, there's a difference between quilted and flamed Unusual to have spalted too - it's subtle and beautiful. Good luck with the sale -
First Bass: Marlin Sidewinder - seemingly the only good one ever made, talking to other Marlin owners Go to bass: Alder/Maple P with East P Retro (on the wish list) My bass: I want two very different sounds (super modern and super retro) and GAS has told me I need two specific and expensive basses for this, so no one bass can do it for me (I'm sure that's not the case, but you know how GAS is)

From a superficial angle, maybe yellow is out this season. The distinctive colour scheme/looks may be a factor. The current trend seems to be more for the vintage fender/valve amp look.
