Does he anchor his thumb on the body sometimes, and other times play with his thumb, anchoring his fingers under the strings? Or maybe he just picks diagonally, occasionally striking the body above and below the strings? I guess you're the expert

I like that. I don't tend to listen to much of this type of music these days (apart from RATM occasionally) but went through a big phase of loving 311, Downset, Dust Junkies etc. and this fits right in these, both stylistically and in terms of quality. Good luck with the single.

I'm really enjoying our band. It's very diverse in terms of age, ethnic origin, experience, gender and even class. Obviously these differences are not important, as we gel so well musically. Socially, the conversation doesn't flow like with a close bunch of friends, but we like eachother. I think that side will take time. We can survive five hours in a car together with no issues, so I think we'll be ok! My last band was a six piece with a hard hitting drummer and loud guitarist, and enjoyable though that was, I'm really enjoying the space that our simple setup creates now. Since buying a five string a few months ago, the four hasn't had a look in. Five is better for my band, and as my band is my only musical outlet at the moment, I don't see things changing, unless I need a more old school sound for recording, or old school sound/look for future bands. Edit. Obviously I'm not saying that all fours sound more old school than fives, but it's true in my case.

I neglected to tell you that the drumkit collapsed, the guitarist threw up mid song and the singer got electrocuted ;-)

Took me a while to get that you were talking about the fretting hand :-D Anyway, I'm a bit of a stickler for one finger per fret, and I find that with practice, index and ring is both comfortable and articulate. If playing the Phrygian or locrian modes, the second/ninth octave would be played with middle/pinky respectively.

I have an M80 and a Protec Contego. Because the Mono is moulded to the shape of the neck, the top of the shoulder straps have to be very close together, which I don't find comfortable. The Protec is wider at that point, so the tops of the straps can be a bit further apart, and I find this more comfortable. The Protec is heavier, but the comfort factor wins every time.

I didn't find him pretentious. Is it interesting? Yes!

Even if your active bass has a particularly high output, it also has a special control which helps you ensure that the optimum signal reaches your preamp ;-)

Love the Meters. When I was playing in a funk band a few years ago, I was a bit obsessed by them. We were about to jam Cissy Strut, when the trumpet player suggested we play it "funkier than the Meters". It turned out he meant faster. I became irrationally pissed off and couldn't speak to him for a week for fear of physically ramming my opinions on the true nature of funk down his stupid blasphemous throat. Anyway, great band, check out Dr Johns Right Place Wrong Time album, what a backing band to have! Soul Machine is my favourite track of theirs, beautiful simmering funk.
