Ah, the best thread on basschat Here's one from Mandrill, criminally underrated IMO - when they get going it's the heaviest funk around (ignore the outro to prev track on the LP, the funk is worth waiting for!)
Wow, that's the funk right there! I'll be seeking these guys out, thanks for posting!
Yes, do post up a pic, you may be the first in the world to do so!

love to see a pic of a 69'er
Not quite the first - these are from the Barefaced Facebook Page. Very excited, if the FedEx guy comes and leaves a card while I'm on the bog or something, I'll go nuts :-D

Well, I've just been told by Alex that '69er number 1 is finally ready! (subject to final testing). I've just paid the balance and will get it on Friday. I plan to stick some nice pics of my full setup in the porn forum as soon as the '69er arrives, so I'll post a link on here. Re. Breaking the speakers in, yes I had read that thread with interest. I'm glad gigging it immediately won't do it any harm, and am prepared to reserve judgement on tone until it's been gigged/rehearsed with a few times. Prime Bass, we mostly gig around Nottingham so come and see/hear it for yourself (if you like reggae)

I don't make instruments, but I do hand-make furniture, and clients always seem to want oak, so I have a lot of experience with it. Observations from my experience: - 'Green' oak cuts is as soft as a turnip, but useless for anything other than outdoor applications, unless you want big, rustic movement. - Oak is heavyish, buy not bonkers heavy. I'd say on a par with mahogany or maple, but nowhere near as heavy as bubinga/cocobolo, wenge etc. - It is quite hard and open-grained, but works reasonably easily. Not the cleanest of cuts in the world, but nothing a bit of tidying can't sort out. - it contains tannins, which, when in contact with moisture and metal, goes black. The sort of moisture content in seasoned oak is that doesn't get wet has never been an issue. I've never had an issue with oak corroding metal. - It finishes easily enough. I've never had an problem with uneven finishing, unless it's a very heavily figured piece with wildly varying densities, such as a burr. - aesthetically, the tangentially sawn stuff can be a bit boring, but not always. The quarter-sawn stuff can have some spectacular medullary rays. - tonally? No idea, I'll leave that to the luthiers. I had no idea oak has such a bad rep! :-)
Oak ... needs to be "green" to be workable.
If you mean you can't work with seasoned oak, I'd have to disagree. I do it all the time. I'm talking about air-dried or kiln-dried.

I don't know about sound, but I work with woods a lot, and maple is softer than rosewood. By a country mile. IME Play both, and you will like the sound of the one you think looks best ;-)

Dilemma (4x8 Ashdown Mini, Genz Benz 2x10, Other?)
Roland Rock replied to Ultima2876's topic in Amps and Cabs
I ordered one of the GB 2x10 cabs after reading the referenced thread. I've hidden it away until Christmas ....
That is some serious willpower. There's no way I could do that. -
Talking of riders, we were provided with free bottles of Carlsberg as the only option. Which is a bit like being offered slightly stale tasting water. I bought my own bitter.

Really good gig tonight. The last time we played there (also a Thursday) it was really quiet, so I was expecting more of the same. The two other bands were the trip hoppy Emily Needs (downbeat atmospheric stuff) and The Lunadogs, who were quite excellent with their quirky rock. By the time we went on, there was a reasonable crowd, and dancing as soon as we started. The coolest part was being taken by surprise when the audience all sang along to our first chorus, especially as we didn't know half of them! We were able to relax, enjoy and play a great gig. Obviously an eyes-closed moment!

Do you think this is a genuine 1978 Fender Precision?
Roland Rock replied to Rothers's topic in General Discussion
i think the bottom line is avoid it mate
I know that intentions can be misinterpreted on forums, so apologies If I have mistakenly detected a patronising tone in your post. I'm not in the market, but I stand by the point that if you can get a great playing and sounding bass for a price where you wouldn't lose out if reselling, then go for it. Don't be put off trying something just because something is not original or from an era of ill-repute. As long as the price is right. :-) -
Do you think this is a genuine 1978 Fender Precision?
Roland Rock replied to Rothers's topic in General Discussion
As soon as I played my 78P in the shop, I knew by the way it sounded and played that I had to have it. I didn't know anything about Fenders at the time and didn't know how old it was - just that it was the nicest playing and sounding bass I had ever played. I traded my Stingray for and have had no regrets. Investment was not a factor (despite my inexperience, luckily the price was fair). The weight and neck pocket gap have never been an issue. I suppose the points I'm trying to make are: - If it's a great bass, it's a great bass regardless of year/brand, but yes, in hindsight ensuring that you're paying the market value is prudent. -Not all late 70's Fenders are dogs -Try before you buy! I wouldn't dismiss that ebay one, as it could be a great bass. I'd try it out, and if good, check the gubbins/establish exactly what is original, and negotiate a substantial price drop based on the findings. -
Turn the volume down on your bass a bit?

I voted for the same one again. On the issue of listening to all of the songs, I don't listen to every second of every song. Most songs I'll listen to in their entirety or at least the vast majority. However, if I'm not keen on the music, or if think that the music does not fit the pictures too well, I'll whizz forward to any other sections just to get a flavour of the whole song. Were some people saying that some people were only interested in the tracks with most votes? I don't get that as you can't see that info until after you vote. Anyway, I start at the top and work my way down to the bottom. Mates signing up just to vote? Bad form, unfair and very much not in the spirit of the competition or BC in general!

Voted. Really high standard this month, but one for me was head and shoulders above the rest

He bought it from the states in September, can't get the link to work, but there are better pics, and it came with those tuners Edit, trying link again http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1978-FENDER-PRECISION-BASS-GUITAR-IN-BLACK-HAS-CASE-LIGHTWEIGHT-/360476589753?nma=true&si=CHteMqBJApS96925jZPWGGROpJk%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 -

The photos are bad, but I'm struggling to see holes for the pickup cover and thumb rest. The knobs look to be dome headed, shouldn't original knobs be flat on top*? Obviously the strap locks are not originals. Also, 9lb 7oz? that's half the weight of a real 78 :-) *based on the fact that they are flat on my 78P Edit, sorry, just noticed I'm echoing what Wooks said -
I stand corrected

Would you buy a bass or amp from Tesco?
Roland Rock replied to brensabre79's topic in General Discussion
I'd have a Tesco Value Bass, white with the Tesco value logo emblazoned right across the front. Made in a sweatshop, tested on animals and comes flat pack. £19.99 -
I understand that proggy stuff is now called math rock or technical metal. I'd like to create a sort of technical prog early rock n roll with complex time signatures. The genre could be called Algorithm and Blues.
