http://www.facebook.com/events/365271943570978/?ref=2 Next gig is at The Maze, Mansfield Rd, Nottingham on Saturday 26th Jan. 8pm £5 on the door Here's what you'll experience: JIMMY THE SQUIRREL One of Nottingham’s finest dancing bands! Having been together for nearly a decade and in that time seen their sound evolve from Ska/Punk to Ska/Reggae, the Squirrel’s have been working hard over the last year to get a new album out in 2013 with once more a change in sound and maturity! Having toured the UK and shared stages along the way with the likes of The Beat, The Selecter, The Slackers, Jaya the Cat, Chris Murray and many more and had members of Pama International and The Big work on their last album, which was released on cult Ska label, Do The Dog Records, JTS have big plans in 2013….and this is the start, with the release of their brand new single – See Me Smile. Supports come from…. UJAHM Recent additions to the Nottingham music scene, Ujahm play an upbeat mix of traditional reggae, 2 Tone Ska and punchy bass pop! The 4 piece have been playing in many bands in the city in the past and since forming last year have had crowds bouncing and high praise from all that have witnessed their shows! Certainly one to be watching out for this year! TOO SPICY Reggae, ska, dub and a bit of punk hailing from the north. Born just over 2 years ago they came together mixing ska, reggae, punk and the occasional dub tune. They’ve already had the great pleasure of playing alongside all time legends Toots and The Maytals, Fishbone, The Beat, The Selecter, Bad Manners and current heroes Gentleman’s Dub Club, Random Hand, New Town Kings, By The Rivers, Jeramiah Ferrari, Spunge…To name a few. WILLIAM BAILEY Local legend, William Bailey comes to get the night started off with his catchy, sing along punk, folk and ska songs. Known as the man behind comedy punks Arse Full Of Chips and Ska/Punk band Gone and Lost It as well as a former members of Nottingham Ska band Breadchasers, Will is a master song writer whose songs stick in your head long after the end of his set! Just a quick update - a local radio station have a weekly roundup of live music, and an annual top ten live acts of the year. Ujahm got in there at number ten! Not exactly a Grammy, but nice to have some appreciation!

Is no band better than just any old band?
Roland Rock replied to 4-string-thing's topic in General Discussion
Looks like I might be testing the theory. Since this thread started I've been in contact with a band who don't play the sort of stuff I'd naturally gravitate toward and they are all much younger than me. Not been in a band for a year now so about time I got back into it, will be interesting to see how it pans out. They might just bin me after an audition of course but I'll see what happens, first meet scheduled for Jan 26th.
Good luck with that Kev. I was in a 'classic rock covers' band a few years back, and didn't like all of the songs (e.g. I liked Won't get Fooled Again, Rocket Man and Dear Prudence, but not China Row or How Long) I had to weigh up the pros and cons, and in the end told myself that if I ever found myself reluctantly going to rehearsals and gigs, time to quit. Luckily the things stayed enjoyable, but there were some "I'm not playing that cheesy Billy Joel song" moments along the way :-) -
Wow - so that's Gretsch and Stingray hated too! I'm coming to the conclusion that any bass with any kind of distinct styling will offend someone's eyes. The only ones missing from this thread are the more blandly styled instruments, which can't offend as the styling is so unimaginative (IMO) I'm talking Bass Collection SB, Ibanez SR, Yamaha RBX etc. So, in conclusion, you should only be upset with this thread if your bass is NOT mentioned
I was listening to some Aretha Franklin the other day and was struck by how prominent and how tasteful the bass in 'Border Song (Holy Moses)' is. Anyone know how played it? Kaye, Jamerson? Truckstop
Chuck Rainey. The whole of the 'young grifted and black' album is bass gold!
-
I just heard "Men in black" by Will Smith for the first time in years, and realised how funky the bassline in that was
That song samples Patrice Rushton's 'Forget me Nots', with Freddie Washington on bass, if you're interested. When I was young, my parents had a tape of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs - not my bag at all, stuff like Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Send in the Clowns etc. Then, BOOM, this gem.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvVr2uks0C8
Any Gretsch
+1 Gretsch are gorgeous things
-
Well, this thread has pretty much covered them all! Is there ANY bass that is universally liked, or at least not hated, aesthetically speaking? Stingray? Gretsch?

Nice muted tone, and I think the little slides you throw in work really well :-)

Poplar is also pretty soft stuff, so with a mere oil or wax finish, you may find it dings easily

Fairly cheap new rig - , 8x10, 6x10 or 2x10/4x10 combination?
Roland Rock replied to RussFM's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd have hoped that the OP is sorted by now. It's been nearly four years! :-D -
Hi Phil, Fair enough if you don't have the inclination to do it yourself. Another thing to consider - is it a solid finish currently? If so, you don't know what the wood will look like under the paint. Luthiers will keep the prettiest wood for natural finishes, so stripping a bass can be a bit of a lottery. The bass will probably be made from two or three pieces of wood, and complimentary grains or even colours is not guaranteed.

New Kit Richardson Music & Video - TRUST
Roland Rock replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Really good, Nigel. Love the arrangement/structure of the song, good lyrics, and a great fun video. Fingers crossed that things move forward this year! ps, needs lots of slap bass -
The body shape of the Vigier Excess always bugs me. The top contour is too shallow, compared to the rest of the body, to have any kind of visual flow/balance.
-
Warwick Vampire and Dolphin. A couple of months ago I'd have said the Fodera AJ sig, but have warmed to its simplicity.
-
Strip, then oil your own body ....oops, sorry, wrong website :-) Stripping is relatively easy, and oiling is even easier. So if going for oil, try to do it yourself. Refinishing with a gloss lacquer is the hard part, as it needs a grain filler, and lots of time and elbow grease to get right. If you're going down that route, probably best to get a pro to do it. Maybe £250? People seem to rate Martin from The Gallery in Camden Btw, there is no bass in your avatar, as your sig suggests :-)

Seems expensive for a coffee? Anyway, people will pay that for coffee because they can't get it for free. If there was a way to get it for free easily, how many people do you think would pay? I have paid for any songs that we're covering, so can take the moral high ground. Secretly, the real reason is that I don't know how to download music for free :-) If i did know how to do it, I'd like to think that I'd still pay.

Got a set of half-rounds... Which should i put them on?
Roland Rock replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
Ah, ok, reading HighFox's post again, I can see the confusion. I read his post as meaning that flats ARE slidy and silky. It would be pretty hard to argue against flats being the smoothest of the string types. They are flat after all :-) Obviously, some flats are smoother than others, and some may say that they prefer rounds for whatever reason, but in terms of smoothness, and lack of friction when sliding, I can't see anyone disagreeing that flats are where it's at * *Actually, scratch that, this is Basschat after all :-) -

Roland Rock replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
Why can't a decent set of flats be easy to slide though? that's all i'm wondering.
Smoothness/slidiness/silkiness are what good flats do best. Much more so than rounds or half rounds. Or am I misinterpreting what you mean by 'easy to slide'? -
Massive difference, ie a difference in mass. :-)
