I used to have a main bass, but seeing as each of my 4 basses is in a different tuning it depends on what I'm doing or which band I'm playing with at the time.

Good choice! I prefer passive basses myself, just put in an order for another 6 string Grind for my new band Only problem is I have no idea when they'll get it in stock!

Ibanez and Peavey both have nice slim necks, along with pretty much any Jazz bass.

I've heard the overdrives are pretty good. Though as another option for overdrive, there are a few basschatters selling a Marshall Jackhammer pedal for (I think) £30. Actually very good on bass! And they have bass, treble, and adjustable mid contour knobs on them. Sounds great as a mild overdrive, and if you've got a blend pedal to retain your clean low end, it also sounds amazing at high gain settings.

I always have my 4x10 on the floor, with no fancy gizmos isolating it. I set my EQ flat, except for a smidgen of VPF and VLE to taste.The way I get rid of boom is to then adjust the Lows until I get the desired effect. It's slightly different for every room. The worst bass I ever played was a Tanglewood precision bass copy. felt and sounded like wet cardboard! Second place goes to (and it pains me to say this) a Yamaha RBX775. Now I have heard some incredible sounds come out of these things, but when I got hold of it there was just wayyyy too much bass and not a lot of midrange. Also, and I've felt the same way about all Yamaha basses, it just didnt 'feel' like a real bass. Like it was made of plastic instead of wood
