1. I've got a ruler on my desk now - 22mm does look massive! That can't be right!! Thanks for the link though - that will do just lovely!
2. I have a lovely Jap P bass, but the string spacing is a little wide for me - I've not accurately measured it but IIRC most Fender 4 strings are about 22mm at the bridge, and most of my other basses are about 19, or even 18 on the 5 strings. I'm happy with the existing BBOT bridge as long as I can use replacement saddles to narrow the spacing a bit - but there are choices. Current USA Fenders come with 3 or 4 quite large grooves cut in the saddles to allow adjustment. But vintage Fenders actually seem to have threaded saddles where the whole thing is grooved, but not as deep. Does either of these have an advantage over the other? And just as importantly - where's the cheapest place to get them? ta
3. Must not buy item 5 from Dan, must not buy item 5 from Dan......
4.
Very cool - I'm off to find out how hard it might be to add frets to a Status fretless. . .
Board off, in the bin, new board on.
5. sh*te. The digitech BSW is different but nevertheless far better.
6. I had one. It was very good. Would have been excellent if it had a clean blend
7. Depends a lot on the amp. If you have a valve in the preamp (or solid state drive function) then any increased input signal will give more grit. but if you have an FX loop then you get a level boost after the preamp stage. So something like the TC Spark / Suhr Koko Boost / DOD BiFET Preamp etc etc in the loop will give you an increase in volume without a tone change unless you actually want one. Sometimes a boost is not about increasing the volume equally, but making it cut more. So sometimes a mid boost is better than a flat boost. A good EQ pedal gives you both options.
8. I have a TM5 and it's brilliant. I actually bought it as a backup to my Marleaux, but they are so different it has become another first choice, depending on the job. The only thing I would say is that they can be quite heavy, so try them out and take your scales!
9.
Hi there, I have made a video using my NXT 5 (with a high C). I have used some EQ and reverb and the sound goes through my GK 200MB amp. I hope that helps!
That is really nice! What EQ and reverb unit did you use? And what settings? thanks!
10. Another vote for Bergantino here. Either the CN112 (1x12) or the CN212 (2x12) I love them - and they seem to work with a variety of amps. I have 3 very different sounding amps and the Berg cabs play nice with them all.
11.
Wouldn't mind trying a set on my fretless 5 string but I notice the "B" is a 136 gauge, I don't fancy taking a file to the nut only to find a woolly B string. Has anyone tried a set on a 35" five string bass?
I use them on my 5 string Marleaux. It's a 34 scale and sounds nice and deep.
12. You oughta know - Alanis Morisette. Bass by Flea on a fretless. Great bass part and enough space to play with it.
13.
It says these are discontinued on the GAK site ?
Fender bought Genz-Benz and then closed them down. If Fender had simply re-badged the Shuttle and Streamliner amps then it would have been fine. Instead they discontinued some of the best modern amps in the world and only made a half-arsed attempt of using the tech in the Fender's own amps.
14.
Just to go somewhat the other way, I've largely stepped DOWN from Fenders to Squiers. I mod them a little, usually just tuners and pickups. Sometimes not even that. More than ever, I could never justify huge costing basses. The law if diminishing returns applies!
Of course! But you don't buy a Ferrari just because it's a car.
15.
I'm absolutely not trying to get into an argument or anything - I'm genuinely interested to understand whether there is something very, very special/unique to justify their prices compared with say a custom ACG, Ken Smith, Wal, Overwater, etc.
I'm guessing an awful lot of it is paying the mental New York rent on their workshop. I bet they could be half-price if they moved to some derelict sh*t hole on the outskirts of Detroit
16. Deal number 4 with Dan. This time for a rack mounting kit for my Genz Shuttle 9.2 Super quick shipping, item looks unused! Thanks again!
17. I like them too, but I find them to suit some basses far better than others. Great on my Precision and on my Marleaux, but horrible on my Sandberg TM5.
18. ^ Can't argue with that. Ishibashi has a couple of Moon basses used at the moment. Excellent basses just without a Fender logo on them
19. I got my Jap Precision directly from Japan. It was used and in great condition. It's been a few years but I'm pretty sure it was about £575 ish including shipping. If you want a Jap Fender then get one from Ishibashi or one of the well respected Japanese ebay sellers. Ishibashi have new and used stock - you just have to move quick when you see something you want. Top service from those guys.
20. I've got an Urge 2 which I really like, but I'm as clueless as you are! Are the electronics in the Urge 1 the same as the Urge 2? Or did they get cheaper with the 2?
21. I do it because I love to play music with other people. I'm long passed any ideas of being paid properly for it so I tend to try to look for things that will be fun or will increase my musical knowledge. I don't really care if there is an audience or not anymore.
22. I did the same - had a RH750 but it wasn't the sound in my head. Then I got a 9.2 and all was well with the world!
23. Both in excellent condition, both have velcro on the bottom The Wampler Sovereign is a cracking distortion box. It's a guitar effect that works well with passive basses, but it does fart out a bit with active ones. Andertons have them at £167.00. Selling mine for £120 delivered. Skreddy P19 is a Muff made with Dave Gilmore in mind. But has a very bass useful mid hump control - it's probably a bit smoother in sound than a regular Muff. RRP's at £175 and seem to go on ebay for about £120 + delivery - so I'll do £120 including delivery in the UK. I am looking for trades in particular: EQD The Depths Wampler Velvet Fuzz ta
24. Denmark Street hasn't been a go-to music shopping place for me for years. Don't think I've been back since the Astoria closed.
25. Stunning amp. Needs cranking though - not for idle noodling while watching telly!
