1.
I wonder if LaBella could be approached about making a set? I've heard of people ordering other custom length sets from them, so they might be open to the idea.
I asked a couple of years ago - There was a minimum order amount. 6 or 12 sets I think. I didn't have £300 to spend on strings so I didn't go for it.
2.
+1. Intuition says that horizontal drivers will give wider dispersion, but the opposite is true. Where the behavior of sound waves is concerned intuition is usually wrong. That's why acoustical engineers aren't born, they're made, through education.
There's a guy on another forum who claims he can hear the difference in his hifi depending on whether the IEC power cable is straight or curved.
3.
I've got a Retro Two10 and at 13Kg and -125dB I can't see the point of having 2 separate 1x10 cabs. I use mine for quiet practise at home to full on gigs with a very loud drummer. Apart from packing considerations in the car / van, am I missing something here?
Yup. When you play with an educational group that has maybe 8 room changes during a day you don't want a single ounce of unnecessary weight.
4. The first one was bought from Bass Gear in about November 2013 The second from Bass Direct about 6 months ish after that. Might have been a bit longer. I'll see if I can weigh them. I'm not convinced my 10 year old bathroom scales will be any more accurate than the official figures, but I'll give it a go. Obviously I can't say whether the scales weigh light or heavy.
5. At some point I'm going to build one too - but I'm going to do a 5 string. My far off plan is to use a Sandberg VS5 passive as the basic instrument and work from there. There are some small pickup builders who will do custom pickups to fit. Maybe in 2020!
6. Vertical is actually better for dispertion in the room.
7. As soon as some one buys my Bergs I'll do a review.
8.
That's settled then. You get the cab and we all form an orderly queue to come and hear it.
At least I've got something to aim for then - try to play properly in front of you bunch of drunks!
9. More photos to come. Selling a pair of Bergantino CN112 cabs. They have mostly been used at home, and when they've been out I've used them with the local educational trust orchestra that my kids also play in. They have not had a hard life at all. They are in very good condition. I bought them both new. One from Bass Gear and the other from Bass Direct. Although I can't remember which is which! 350W handling 8ohm Only 28 lb in weight per cab. Collection only from Northants, near Junction 16 on the M1. Cash on collection. I paid £625 for each of these - On sale at £425 each, but if you want both then £800 for the pair. Not interested in trades. Thanks.
10. I like using a single cab for small stuff - playing with woodwind instruments etc. the 2x10 would be over kill.
11. I think I'm going to do it. It's a great sounding cab, and I don't play full on rock much these days - I'm playing more left hand piano scores, big band, swing etc. The missus will be happy if the Berg stack is removed from the lounge!
12. I'm getting more tempted by the minute. I might have to take the plunge.
13. I've got a One-10 and I love it. On it's own I don't think it is enough to cope with a raging drummer - so is anyone using a pair for that purpose? If so - how are you getting on? In my constant battle for weight loss I'm wondering about selling my Bergs and using a pair of One-10 instead.
14. I use the 110 on it's own for the local educational music trust orchestra that my kids play in and it's great. I'm not sure one would cope with a raging rock drummer though. Two might do the trick. Not sure I'd want to sell my Bergs to find out though.
15. That's why I'm confused. I thought all the heft came from the power section - but there's a definite difference in changing preamps.
16. I had pretty much decided to sell my beloved Ampeg preamp and I took a load of good pictures. I was planning to sell because I'm downsizing in general, and I also find myself needing a guitar amp and need to raise some funds. I hadn't turned it on for months so I wanted to make sure all was working perfectly before I listed it. I plugged it into the FX return of my little Puma 300 and just into a Barefaced One-10. Power amp and cab far removed from the Ampeg ethos of everything being massive. It sounded amazing. I'm actually really annoyed for 2 reasons. Firstly I was only checking everything was working and I did really want to sell it. Secondly - Ampeg - FFS!!!! - take the tube preamp design and add a good Class D power amp! The power units are so small these days the whole thing could probably fit in a 1u box. I've been reading the Class D / "Heft" arguments with interest and I'm beginning to wonder how much of an influence an older style preamp would have with a Class D power amp, even if the weight went up a bit. The Demeter I just sold had that approach and was stunning (my favourite amp I've ever owned), but I was still surprised to discover that assembling the same concept with a standalone old fashioned Preamp and a Class D power amp had a very similar outcome, especially when the preamp was designed when Class D wasn't available for instrument amps. Unfortunately I don't have the technical knowledge to begin to explain - but I can certainly hear more weight / heft just with using the ampeg rather than the Puma's own preamp. Still, the Ampeg has gone back into the "don't sell it" pile, and now I have to find sale items in the stupid pedal collection instead.
17.
In purely financial terms, yes - both cost about the same (i.e. about £1300 new). But in terms of build quality they are not on a par at all - the TT leaves the Am Standard in the dust. And the TT will be infinitely customisable - any colour combination you like, blocks, dots or plain fretboard, your choice of fingerboard wood, matched headstock if you want, etc etc etc ...
Fully agree. I only sold mine because I'm only playing 5 strings now.
18. Pickup hole shape is different in the older ones too. Mine is a 2005 - holes don't have the ramp sections, just a rectangle.
19.
What amp are you using?
Tecamp Puma and until Owen bought it, a Demeter head. I found the Bergs had a bit more character to them than the Vans. I think a super clean amp with the Vans would be a bit soulless.
20. Selling a Hipshot Ultra-lite D tuner HE6C It is the larger of the 2 sizes - the 11/16 suitable for Fenders / Stingrays etc. You'll need your own low profile screw because I have no idea where it went. These seem to be about £90 new (as per Axesrus site) so I'm after about £60 ish including delivery in the UK ta
21. Used Roland Cube 30. Works great with a low B. I now have a tiny Barefaced One10 and Puma head which actually weighs less than the Roland, but I can't bring myself to sell it. It's too good.
