1. I can't believe this. Karl is a genuine no-bullshit guy. Couldn't have been more helpful when i bought his Berg HT322. He told me if i wasn't happy once i tried it then we could cancel the deal. I couldn't have asked for a more genuine, pleasant transaction. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in buying from Karl again and to be perfectly honest i think he undersold the cab to me. It was an absolute bargain as far as i am concerned. I think this borders on slanderous behaviour against Karl who certainly doesn't deserve it. If the guy is now doing it with someone else should we not have him removed from the site. Constructive feedback on a deliberate misleading sale is different but that aint Karl. All the best and you have my full support mate. Stick with us - you are a good genuine guy and it would be an absolute shame if you took umbridge with Basschat over one guys unacceptable behaviour. Dave
2. I think the corrosion normally comes from being stored in lofts or garages in damp environements rather than the PVA but i have noted that myself and it is a valid point worth further investigation. Dave
3. Gave the roadie a row for sitting on my Bergs first rehearsal. If he wants to sit use the chairs. That's when i realised i was obsessed with keeping my gear in good condition. Yes if my gear gets a genuine knock i will be pissed off but that's life in a band but i won't accept general carelessness or lack of respect for others gear. I don't mind putting cups on my flightcased amp rack cause it was 2nd hand and pretty used when i got it for nothing but would never dream of doing it directly on my amps more so in case it got knocked over and killed the amp. Liquid and electrics don't really like each other too much and have a novel way of letting you know they aren't happy - OUCH !!!!! I also didn't work up to buying good playable gear for it to be ruined by careless roadies or anyone else for that matter. Rest of my band are all pretty conscious of looking after their gear. They have worked hard to get it and what better reason to make sure it is kept in relatively good condition. Dave
4. Screws appeared to be exact same size but will check on that. That would probably explain it. I may go back to original buttons. Cheers Dave
5. sorry to disappoint most but i like the jam from the OP and the harmonic track where i could hear an actual bass but the rest sounds like a jumbled box of noises to me and can't see the attraction especially the live stuff. A little too extreme for my taste and poles apart in style - I'm not sure whether he's a bassist or a DJ. Its probably an age thing cause a lot of the live stuff sounded like old Rave material. I guess he's trying to cover as many styles as poss but that's a bit risky IMO. He's certainly a very talented player. Dave
6. Does anyone else have a problem with their strap lock buttons loosening off. On both my Fender and Overwater J4 they have loosened themselves on the body at the horn end. Bridge end is fine. Thought maybe it was because the strap now sits further away from the body and therefore a bit more strain on the button itself. Original buttons would have the strap sitting close to the body. Can't remember the mfr. Got them on ebay but they work well otherwise. They are pretty well made so its not a quality issue i think. Dave
7. I've had my Thumb from new back in 89. Its the NT model with EMG's and plays like a dream. It is a little neck heavy but you get used to that quite quickly. Its by far the easiest bass to play but doesn't suit all types of music IMO. All the best with it. Dave
8. Nope - afraid not. Little weird. Would hate to sit next to you at a gig - it would be funny though. I reckon its not the strangest way to learn songs though. I bet someone else can come up with a weirder trend. All best Dave
9. [sub]i need to listen to this later tonight at home. can't access at work. I'm intrigued.[/sub] [sub]Dave[/sub]
10. appears to have a wide string spacing or is it just my eyes playing tricks. Dave
11.
His brother Quincy is
brilliant made my day
12.
Thanks Dave. The Talkbass thread is exactly that. A guy takes a block of wood - and he went out of his way to get the cheapest nastiest old block of wood that he could find. He then adds the neck, bridge, PuPs etc. So essentially it is a Jazz bass (or was it a Precision) but without the "proper" body. He then records the bass under very strict conditions. He puts the mp3 up online and challenges people to see if they can tell the difference between the block bass and a real bass that he had recorded at the same time. Don't just believe me - go have a listen if you can find it - its impossbile to tell them apart. It was after seeing and hearing that when i decided to use a Squier body. The only reason i'll pull it apart and split is that i have grown quite interested in BITSAs and bought a really old Squier (80s) that i prefer the look of (i am old school) and want to pimp that one too. Its mildly addictive. I want to put in some of the vintage wiring in on my next build. Anyways, thanks for the interest. I mean look at this bad boy...
I HATE YOU FOR THIS. DO YOU REALISE HOW MUCH TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY HAS GONE INTO MY LITTLE COLLECTION I'll need to get a look at the talkbass item at some point although i like the look of the wood on my basses. Still a little Ronseal on any old block of wood would do just the same I can appreciate the addiction in building your own but i just can't get over the fact you are dismantling a gorgeous bass to do it. Did you ever agree on a selling price out of curiosity. Its a real shame you are so far away cause i might have went for this. I like it. Here's a thought - why not just give it to me and that will make up for all the distress you've caused me with the block of wood comment I've just noticed I'm addicted to adding these stupid little faces to everything. Damn !!! Cheers Dave
13. Is there much diff between the 2 Mockingbirds when playing. ? Dave
14.
Thanks. It is an attention grabber thats for sure. I really want someone to try it as i am sure that it would sell it. After all, its an Amercian Precision except the body - anyone who has seen the test on Talkbass with the block of $1 wood with a neck stuck on knows that the sound is in the electrics. All the important bits are high quality.
I haven't seen the Talkbass test. Please don't hurt my feelings after spending a lot of dosh for my Overwater when a block of wood with a neck would have done same job. Wood (excuse the pun) think that the choice of body woods does make a difference in sound. When buying my Overwater i tried same basses with different woods and they all sounded quite different from wood that gave you that mid range growl to others that were more suited to slap bass with a hi end twang if that's the best description. Can't see that in this case though the choice between American or Japanese wood for the body would make a huge difference. My example above was more extreme from Bubinga type woods to Alder and lighter woods. Please note I'm no expert in wood. At the end of the day if i new what i was getting and it looked and played good i would be happy with any reasonable price. Hope it works out for you as i don't think i would want to dismantle a bass i had built just to make a few quid extra on the sale. I would be too proud of my achievements and rather take a slight loss baring in mind the enjoyment you had building it. Its not all about the money - i think. Its still a very nice looker. Cheers Dave
15. I like it. Again i would probably prefer to try first. I would only buy from someone i had 100% confidence and trust when its a project bass. Must admit though i do like this. Dave
16. Nice one. Its mine - can i have it back please. Enjoy Dave
17. Nice collection. Especially like the Mockingbirds. Do you have a particulat Fav. - a goto bass. ? Dave
18. not too keen on that one i'm afraid
19. Good thread and good to see you picking up Shep. I'm open minded on this one but think that as we get older we generally exercise less. Simple things that we took for granted as teenagers become a bit more strenuous. Many minor problems could be helped if we all stretched and took some light exercise to loosen muscles before holding a heavy bass for 2-3 hr sessions. I'm pretty lucky that I don't have many issues with my back but find on a 6hr rehearsal my lower back starts to ache a little. I only do this every couple of weeks and gigs are generally up to 2hrs so it's not a real problem for me. Make sure you get someone to lend a hand lifting your cabs in and out of car / van though. Dave
20.
I thought Percy Jones was black.
Only with the lights out
21.
They are and sound very 'vintagey' and bassy when you change the neck on the Geddy to a rosewood one. It's the thin neck that gives the thin sound not the pickup. I know as I have one on my present Jazz and it changed the sound completely.
I like the sound of my Geddy Jazz. Had no idea the neck would make that much difference though. Nice fact to keep in mind if I decide to buy another. Now that you've pointed that out and i think about it the jazz basses I've always thought stood out a bit more and preferred have nearly always been Rosewood necks. Whow ! thanks for that. Dave
22. That's one very nice bass. Whereabouts are you. Dave
23. Thanks Gusto It is the classic heritage bass on ebay at moment. Black ripple and looks very nice but not having heard or played one wasn't too sure. At £199 it wouldn't be a bad buy i think but depends on where bidding goes. I may take a risk just to say i have one. They are gorgeous basses. Cheers Dave
24. I have seen one of these for sale and wondering if they are any good. I like the look of them but have never seen one in the flesh and never tried one. Obviously not an American one. Made in China version. Any thoughts ? Is it worth a serious look. ? Cheers Dave
