1. Excellent review. Great read and good to see you didn't go over board on the sales pitch. Honest review from a genuine pro-bassist. Well done and many thanks. Dave
2.
but at my age I just love the days out.
Like it. Good to hear jazz73 got there in the end thanks to BC. Wondered how that went Dave
3.
By the way did I mention that i would either meet halfway or deliver (within reason) or on the way to a gig! How's that for being nice?!?
Shame but unless you want a 400mile round trip to meet me halfway or you are playing North of border its still a wee bit too far for me. Nice cab and great price too. All best Dave
4. Yep I'm wondering what you fancy changing too. Thought you had found your perfect set up with this one. Dave
5.
This. There's a Warwick WCA 600W 4ohm for sale on here at the moment http://basschat.co.u...ge__hl__warwick Very underrated cabs IMHO, and at £155 is not to be missed. I have no interest in or affiliation to the seller!
Had a look at that cab. Like Warwick gear in general but its collection only so not an option for me at 400+ miles away. Will keep looking though Dave
6. I once tried to hire some picks with limited success. Well none to be honest. They offered to lease them on a 99yr lease but couldn't justify that commitment. I would have thought there would have been a greater variety to pick from. Sadly not and i ended up putting a down payment on one and the rest is history. I am now in serious debt and can barely afford to live. Picks have a lot to answer for IMHO. Dave
7. I covered one of my plastic picks with denim back in early 80's. Gave me a nice rounded tone rather than a sharp click. Still have it although i had to put patches over the knee areas. Also had a 1/2 pence flattened and shaped like a pick. Wasn't a great success that one. Good for metal type songs though. Still have my very first pick ever from mid 70's which was a big heavy tortoise type shaped and curved. Heavy though. Also a felt one which was a bit wobbly but that's another story. Dave
8. I've seen some of these Marshall 8x10 cabs go for under £200 virtually new. I guess that says a lot in itself Curious to know how they sound though. Dave
9. Having spotted a few for sale recently i was curious to know if anyone had tried them. They don't seem to stay with their owners for very long. Any reason for sudden changes of heart and selling on quickly. I was thinking of buying one. Cheaper option than an Ampeg for example. Dave
10. You London guys are pretty lucky you have these kind of jam sessions on your doorstep. Must be great to go along locally and hear some of these famous players. I'm so bloomin envious now. I think its a bit of a shame we don't have them up here as far as i know. ? All best Dave
11.
HiWatt clone? looks like the internals are totally different.
Must be a modern clone using solid state replacements Sorry couldn't help myself there. Dave
12. At rehearsals on Sun i found that certain notes on certain strings were dropping out ie B on the E string most noticeable. Playing at higher volumes with GB stl 600 and Berg cabs mounted on a Gamma board. Couldn't understand it so decided to try the studios EBS amp in parallel with my GB and into seperate cabs. Still same so put everything back together however when doing so i noted that one of the plugs on GB wasn't in fully and clicked in place. Hey Presto problem solved. One for the note book to all to double check plugs are in and secure i guess. Cheers Dave
13. Geddy Lee - Moving Pictures era Glenn Hughes - live Purple era and Hughes & Thrall album 1982 Jeff Berlin on Bruford's album One of a Kind. Pete Hurley from Lone Star. Jack Bruce with just about anything - mainly his Warwick Thumb sound though. Cheers Dave
14. I had a twin neck Shergold 4&8 ring back in late 70's / early 80's. This is the bass i wish i had always kept. Fantastic and a piece of British history which has sadly gone. Good luck with sale Dave
15. Well done. Good luck. Some class musicians and those vocals are incredible. Not quite sure which genre it fits into but its good foot tapping stuff no matter what. Liking it a lot. Cheers Dave
16. Take into consideration older relatives who simply don't like or understand rock music but would like to pay their respects in the traditional manner. They may not have been in regular contact with the person but blood is thicker than water and all families tend to show their respects when it comes down to it. Like the idea of acoustic set to start and explanation of why its being done this way and request for proper rock set later. That gives people time to pay respects and leave before it gets too loud or heavy for them. Sounds like you've given it enough thought to make it work though so all the very best. Don't envy you on this at all and not sure i personally could play at it - I'm a bit of an emotional git so this would be hard to pull off for me. Dave
17.
Bongo's = look like toilet seats.
Agree - accurate description too. Can't quite take to single cut away basses either. Too weird for my tastes. Kinda like the BC Rich basses shown earlier and the Mockingbird for some weird reason. Dave
18. New to me too but just ordered on Amazon. Thanks for a nice little eye-opener. Great stuff. Great bass sound. Also added a few others to my wish list for later. Cheers Dave
19.
Got my black Classic J last week. Noticed that the volume pot is wobbling, but I suspect that is because it had two days of abuse at LBGS'12. Anyone know how the knob comes off to tighten it? Is it just a pull as I cannot see a retaining screw hole? Plays nicely and looks good too. Had apparently been set up for the show by Chris May, unfortunately with a lighter set than I use normally (38-98 as opposed to 45-105) but I shall live with those for a while before getting a heavier set on. Thought that the J pup was quieter than the P initially, but actually I think not after yesterdays noodle, it is just that it is thinner (probably not the right word) being back at the bridge. We also have to bear in ming I have been using active basses since the Wal was converted by Pete in '96 All in all I am currently pleased with the deal I got railroaded (mind it didn't take that much for the plastic to be flashed ) into late in the show last Sunday
Keep us posted on how that sounds. I've looked at these too but have to say your black one looks very nice. I already have 2 active Overwaters but would be nice having the P/J set up. Sometimes feel my Fender J lacks a little depth for some songs. This could be the answer. Chris and his team make fantastic great quality basses and they are all good guys which helps a lot. Dave
20.
Sorry Dave but we, the collective, will NOT allow you to retire. You will have to come up with a much more sensible plan.
Nice - i like a plan
21. Probably a bit late with this reply but thought i would add my little bit. I have used Roland 6B m/fx pedal for few yrs now based on what most people think - get one and see what you like - cheaper option. I tend to use a touch of comp mostly. Occasionally use the Ampeg SVT setting for Glenn Hughes sound with a touch of reverb. What i do like about them is the fact i can waste many an hour experimenting at home just for enjoyment and when i have a song that needs something a little extra i have a better understanding of the unit and what to look for. I've spoken with other bassists who think similarly but opted for the Boss ME unit which is cheaper. Both these units can be picked up fairly decent prices on BC or ebay. Saved me a lot of money buying seperates. Dave
22.
The amp will travel back in time!..
WHOW !!!!! That's an interesting concept. Do you have any theories to support your findings. Dr Who could verify this with a single quantum time step from the Tardus Brill. like it Dave
23. Finally got to hear this and very nice it was too. I can see this developing into some very intricate music. Nice set up with drums, vibes and bass. Pretty unusual but works well. Good luck and all the very best. Keep us posted with new material. Dave
24.
Carluke is far too polite for any trouble. I actually live in Law Village and the pub there is definitely not polite in the slightest. However, the Indian take away is the business! I actually mean that areas like the OP is speaking about (and Viewpark and the like) have an attitude along the lines of taking the law into their own hands. One does not call the cops. In my experience, most of the bands I have played in take the same attitude. I wasn't brought up like that (in quiet Yorkshire) but there you go...
Ah the LAW (no pun intended) village - i know it well. Several friends live there. Yep agree never managed enough courage to go into the pubs though. Cheers Dave
