1.
It would take more than some gear being stolen to dampen Paddy's spirits for long, always a silver lining - the most upbeat guy that I've ever met! Gets a bit annoying at times...!
I'm extremely envious of guys with that upbeat attitude to life. Dave
2.
When i told my bass teacher i had been to neil murray masterclass at LBGS he was dead impressed. He has had lessons off him himself and rates him as a top player.
He has been a huge influence since first hearing / seeing him with Colloseum 2 many yrs ago and then with Whitesnake and the many many guest or session spots he did. Wide and varied styles and terrific punch and attack when needed. Neil and Jack Bruce probably the ideal Rock bassists IMHO. I'm now jealous and wish i had taken lessons from Neil - that would be a highlight in anyone's career. thanks Dave
3. The HT322 cab is definitely far heavier and after today's rehearsal as a trial it may only be used for gigs and the AE's used for rehearsals or smaller gigs or "lighter" style of music mainly due to weight. It's not physically a huge cab and i am able to lift on my own for short distances but getting in and out of car / van requires 2 people. Once on ground it has wheels anyways so not so much a prob. I definitely fancy a TF amp after reading about them but cost and availability might still be an issue. What's reliability like for TF amps. ? With regards magnet not having any significant effect on sound i would have to question that otherwise all speakers would virtually sound same cause there isn't much more to the actual speaker itself as far as i know and it would then be down to the design of the cab. I don't think that is completely the case but stand to be corrected by people in the know (maybe Alex could comment on that one). I've always taken the approach that it is a combination of all parts that make a difference to a cabs sound. Otherwise you could put a cheap speaker in a great cab and it should in theory sound as good as an expensive speaker. ?? Interesting point though. I'll keep you posted on HT322 later today. Dave
4. Loved it Nick. Fantastic technique, very fluent. Great song and i would buy this. I can feel your excitement from here. Its given me a nice feeling just reading this thread. Dave
5. Thanks for that JTUK. The AE112's are my first venture into Neo lightweight cabs and jury still out for me too. I love the clear crisp sound i get but at higher volumes with classic rock band i find they lack a little something. Adding my Warwick amp to another cab with very slight boost appears to give the Berg's that little extra Umph that i feel they need. I think they would be ideal cabs for a more professional style in respect that jazz or studio session bassists would gain more from that Hi-fi type of sound and not require the extra boost. Used the Warwick into Ampeg 8x10 with very little volume from it and running that in parallel with my GB and Bergs from my Roland MFX it does produce a very filling clear sound. I'm not convinced as yet that it is the speaker and it may be the GB amp. Some more investigation required on that front. I'm hoping the new HT322 will produce the required sound from my GB at Sundays rehearsal. Its good to get soemone else's views on these lightweight cabs and amps as I'm not entirely sure they provide the sound I'm looking for. I read up on the TF amps and Warwickhunt told me a lot about them few mths ago when i met him. His was in storage on the day so couldn't get a chance to try it. They are quite rare though but they do appear to have that Mosfet power and depth with a warmer valve type sound. That might be my next purchase if this GB and Berg thing doesn't work out over next few weeks. Appreciate you keeping me posted on your findings and i likewise. Good luck and all best Dave
6.
Cheers Dave Obviously it seems like a big thing at the time and it p155es you off but no one died and all it costs is a bit of money and inconvenience so you have to put it in a bit of prospective. Still, great to get it back - luck of the Irish eh...! Funnily enough, he's just arranged to buy another amp, even going as far as negotiating an "endorsement deal" to get it a bit cheaper. Dunno what he will do now??
Maybe a blessing in disguise in a round about sort of way. If he gets an endorsement that'll be a nice bonus and lift his spirits a bit. You still get very attached to your gear though and its annoying when someone takes what you've worked hard for over the years. Its still good to see a happy type of ending though and that bit definately cheered me up as i read through the post. Well done and good luck to him with the endorsement deal. If he wants i could keep his old gear for him in a very safe place. Dave
7.
I really hate it when that happens. If someone doesn't like the song I would rather they just said than dropping this excuse. Especially when someone has put so much effort into learning it. If its learnt, give it an airing and let the audience decide!
Annoyed the hell out of me that did cause I'm a huge fan of Neil Murray. Jack Bruce and Neil were probably my biggest influences so i was really into covering that particular version and giving it my best as a matter of respect for the original bass line done by Neil. Check his live performance using a Kramer. Some of his runs are incredible. Hugely under-estimated bassist IMO. Dave
8. Will check out vid when i get home. Looking forward to it - seems like all good comments so far. Dave
9. Neil Murray original and live version of Fool For Your Loving by Whitesnake and then the band changed their mind and said it was too dated This is a classic rock band doing covers of Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake and Sabbath. Work that one out if you can. Dave
10. Yep would give him my vote as best bass dealer I've ever dealt with and I've never even met him. Helpful, pleasant and hugely knowledgable but never pushy like a salesman. What more does an aspiring bassist need in life. Another bass, a new amp, strings, effects, Mmmmmm ! Great guy to deal with Dave
11. He might notice its upside down Where's me anorak Dave
12.
I feel new string day should really be a Bank Holiday, so you have time to really get into the newness.
+1 totally and wholeheartedly agree with this comment Dave
13. My worst nightmare !!! No words can explain feelings on this one but hopefully the gear is still ok and that maybe someone will know who the scum was. Hope all is well All the very best Dave
14.
Sounds great... I have to say, I have fixed my 2xAE112;s from being as bass lite as I thought, altho rooms make a difference. As always, a work in progress. I still have the amp running flat on the dials and no 4 band parametric switched out I am thinking that there is something in the NEO/Ceramic difference as I am getting to hear a NEO type sound recall with all the NEO units I have tried. So far, that is Berg, GK, MarkB, Ampeg, Eminence chassis' to recall just a few..
Hi JTUK That's quite a selection of cabs you've gone through. Wouldn't mind your opinion on some of them and why you changed so often. Cheers Dave
15. Started on Bass in 76 and plan to continue until I'm good. I have now moved onto the 2nd string down - i think that is the A although my 6 string sounds out of tune when i play it Dave
16. Just bought an HT322 cab from a gem of a guy Karlfer on BC and what a beast the cab is. Its heavy but has a lot more depth than the AE112 cabs i have. Probably down to depth and size of cab. Still has that clear Berg sound although haven't run it high volumes yet. Next rehearsal Sun and will ramp up the GB Stl 600 to see how it compares. 800W 4ohm cab. Not physically too big at 26"x23"x18" so pretty well manageable and fits in the wife's mini. Has good sturdy wheels too so that helps a fair bit. Anyone else have / had one of these and how did you find it. ? Cheers Dave
17. Bought Karl's Berg HT322 cab today. He undersold this cab IMHO. It is in mint condition. Had a great afternoon chatting about basses as you do and his wife makes a fantastic cup of coffee (another fine Scot - enough said) Karl even left the room to let me test the cab on my own with his new EBS TD650 amp and his Lakland Jazz bass. Transaction went perfect. No issues with the cab and when i got home the difference between this and my AE112 cabs is quite noticeable having far more depth and low end punch. I'm chuffed to bits. If you get a chance to deal with Karl then jump at it in confidence. Genuine no hassle guy. The way all deals should be. Nice selection of basses there too with his newly acquired Donald "Duck" Dunn precision. Very nice. All the very best Karl and thanks for making us feel very much at home with you both today. PS Hope you bought your wife something nice. Cheers and thanks again. Dave
18.
Dave has just done a 400 mile round trip to pick up what was my Berg HT322. Decisive, did everything he said he would, supremely easy transaction. Absolutely fabulous bloke, deal with confidence. By the way, he is one Hell of a bass guitarist. Enjoy Dave and my thanks, Karl.
Thanks Karl, Coming from someone with your background and knowledge of bass your comment is extremely flattering and cannot thank you and your wife enough for putting up with us this afternoon. I'm off to leave feedback for yourself and thanks again. It was great meeting you and talking basses all afternoon. All the very best Dave
19. I had a great holiday in Ireland. Started at Belfast from ferry port up the coast to Port Stewart then down to Donegal and onto Sligo to Galway then Limerick and onto Killarney for the Harley Davidson bike rally where Whitesnake, Roy Wood and Bonnie Tyler played over long weekend at Gleeagles Hotel. Weather was a bit wet on the first journey to Port Stewart but from there it just got warmer and sunnier. Last 4 days at Killarney were glorious. Couldn't have asked for more. People were friendly and helpful everywhere we went. Ireland doesn't sell itself well enough by any means. Dave
20.
The HT is ceramic. The design of the cab will have more of an influence on the sound than the type of magnet. The guys on TB rate the HT322 as one of the best cabs Jim Bergantino ever made. If it wasn’t so heavy I’d have beaten you to it! Bergantino cabs seem like they are “bass lite” but it's just a different kind of bass. They don't do pillowy, woolly or muddy (choose your adj); they are tight, focused and defined down low. On stage it might sound different but stand out front and a ton of bass will punch through. I use 2 AE112 cabs (supposedly lite on bass) and I've been told that out in the room I have a fat and full bass sound. So don’t be put off by the lack of boom or mud, you can still rattle fillings out at the back of the room.
The HT322 was too good a bargain to miss. Plus Karl appears to be a top guy based on his feedback and his comms so far. I'm really looking forward to hearing it at full throttle (loud anyway) next rehearsal a week on Sunday. I think that kinda stacks up with what my band say about the bass sound. That out front and where the drummer sits those AE112 cabs are by far the best bass sound they have ever heard. Maybe because I'm standing directly in front i'm just not getting the full brunt of them. Have never compared like for like cabs between Ceramic and Neo so can't comment really. You would need to compare similar styles of cabs with same size speaker to really do justice to the trial and have them running at various volume levels. I think we may have hi-jacked the OP's original question a bit here. Obviously I would recommend the Berg cabs with GB head. Dave
21. I'm more than likely gonna use the HT322 alone with AE112's as portable back up if required depending on gig. The HT is 4ohm. I have ran my Warwick amp into an Ampeg 8x10 to see how it all sounded along with my GB and Berg 112's. Oddly the Ampeg and Warwick gave it more bottom end or it could simply have been the fact there was more speaker displacement and it just felt bigger or fuller. Volume on both amps decreased a fair bit when running both. Completely different types of rig but overall it was a very full and clear sounding set up if not a little big to be humphing around without a road crew. I'm kinda still in experimental mode with the GB and Berg 112's. Love the sound but occasionally i feel something is lacking. It could well be that it is the number of actual speakers rather than a size of speaker if that makes sense. The other thing with the HT cab is that it isn't rear ported although has a front port and that may affect the sound. The other difference will be the type of speakers - although the AE's are 12's they are Neodymium whereas the HT are i believe ceramic but could be wrong on that. That will also affect the sound a bit IMO. Don't pick the HT cab up until tomorrow. I'll keep you posted as to my findings. Dave
22. Watch it - those Canadians are ganging up on us. That's two on this page. That makes a gang. Welcome to another friend from Canada. Fantastic country and people are just great. Have friends / relatives scattered from Niagara to Vancouver Island and places in between. I'll have a look for the mags you need and if i have them you can take them. Probably a long shot though dating back to 2006. I have a wife who cleans a lot. I'm surprised i haven't been thrown out All the best Dave
23. Welcome aboard from me in Scotland. Any offer of friendship, advice and general good-will is always appreciated on here. All the very best Dave
24.
PS was watching Malcolm in the Middle last night and heard this "If I wanted perfection I would have employed a robot - or a swede" :-)
Malcolm in the Middle - whow i haven't heard of that in yrs. Is that the Winnie Cooper series. ??? Brilliant. Sorry - got carried away with flashbacks for a minute. Welcome aboard Inti. Will check out your vids later at home. Not able to open at work. Good comments about them so far so looking forward to that tonight. All the very best Dave
