1. How stupid am i. It was a track called WHY and on the Demons & Wizards Deluxe CD that i just happened to buy along with several other classic rock CD's earlier this year. Hadn't played it as i forgot i bought it and was still using the vinyl. I think its Mark Clarke who's playing bass on this omne as it sounds very much like a Gibson EB3 type of bass rather than Gary Thain who tended to use Fender Jazz. Have a listen to it - classic rock bass playing especially the solo. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kscXG8ro6hQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> thanks guys Dave
2.
I had to slim down my rig because I moved into a first-floor flat in an 18th century building and I couldn't get a 410 up the narrow stairs on my own. Fair enough if some people find compact neo cabs to be lacking, but if you're going through the PA anyway it doesn't really matter. If you consider your backline as your on-stage monitor then you realise it's actually beneficial not to be swamping the stage with a load of bass. FWIW my rig is currently a Shuttle head, Schroeder 212 and a pedalboard. I can carry all of those plus a bass and bag of cables from the car in one trip. It's a bit awkward and involves some shuffling, and hopefully no doors, but I can do it!
yep have to agree with you on that point. whats the point if its going thru a PA anyways. Dave
3. Wasn't on an album that i know off but i don't have them all. Have Demons & Wizards and huge fan of Gary Thain too. It was either Gary or Mark Clarke i think but haven't been able tfind it. I remember reading that when it was recorded no-one knew which bassist actually recorded it so it might have been a lost recording of some kind. Met Mick Box and Trevor in 80's when they played Glasgow and John Sloman was vocalist. John was brilliant guy to talk with and Trevor is an absolute gem and what a bassist. He did a bass solo that night and tripped backwards on his lead and didn' even lose a beat. I was extremely impressed that night. He was using a Kramer with the Di-Marzio twin precision pick ups if i remember right. Dave
4. Really nice. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Liked the bass - very cool. Good quality vid and sound recording so well done to all. Liked the idea of live strings too. Don't see it very often. Hope to see more. Dave
5. Pretty sure i was told by Chris May from Overwater to use Linseed oil on my Overwater fretless when i bought it a few yrs back. Haven't actually usedcanything to date apart from a wipe with a duster so this is an interesting topic. When watching my bass being set up Chris used linseed oil when finishing off the bass cleaning before handing over to me. Dave
6. I have an old NAD 3020 from 80's and still going strong. Only servicing done was to clean the volume pot with switch cleaner when it started crackling. I've used this at some quite high volumes too during the odd drunken party and no issues what so ever. Dave
7. yep enjoyment for me too. Fits the band nicely and looking like such fun into the bargain. Dave
8. yep - like it. not sure i would defret my jazz. i've been looking at squier fretless jazz basses. Great song too from my namesake - LOL Enjoy - they are great fun and allow much more freedom and expression in your playing. Had a fretless precision in early 80's playing in a rock band - that was fun. Dave
9. Cant open Vid link - states that its private ?? Any ideas Dave
10. I came across a track by Uriah Heep somewhere circa 1972 era which had a fantastic bass riff running all through it. It stated that no-one knew whether the bass player was Mark Clarke or Gary Thain. Does anyone on BC know what the track might be. I've tried the various sites trying to locate but no luck and can't remember where i originally heard it. Any help appreciated Dave
11.
If Carlsberg made basses, they would be mass-produced and utterly bland :-)
bit like Fender then and i have one too Still love it though. Dave
12. Sympathy to you but word of caution. I went down the light weight Bergantino cabs and found they lacked a bit in rock band set up so ended up buying the heavier HT322 cab from Karlfer. Sometimes its good to have a back up plan just in case. Have you tried the exercise route first and strengthen back muscles. Save losing your well earned gear Dave
13. agree - i don't sell gear very often but recently sold some for a deceased friends family and always try to leave a donation. I try to aim for somewhere between 5-10% of sale. Its a bit like leaving a restaurant tip i guess. Always nice to reward the waiter. And you always get a nice personal thanks email from the team which is a really nice touch and makes you feel good the rest of the day. Everyone's a winner Dave
14.
Cheers Dave! Yep it's a cracker of a bass - will be sad to see it go but needs must... See you at Lanark!
Missed your vocals at the Lanark gig. Made quite a differance. Hope your back to full health. Great night once again. Had to leave just before the end though - sorry didn't catch up with you. Next time !!! Dave
15.
He's from Falkirk, they're more interested in sheep
Don't think its very nice bringing relatives into this topic So it was a red bass then - Mmmm interesting Cheers Dave
16. One of mine from the mid 80's at the Heathery Bar in Wishaw. This was one of the largest "pub" venues in UK at one time holding 300+. Great place and had many great nights there. Toured UK and recorded with this band Gypsies Kiss. Had an absolute ball with them. Just remembered i toured with a broken leg too. Great cause i had roadies to do all the work in them days. Plug & play - LOL !!! Cheers Dave
17. great gigs. Good to see your pics. Long may it continue Dave
18. Don't remember this one but can remember picking the bones of International Musician mags for bass articles. Dave
19. Full rig run from DMX Showtec desk. Using Maplin side stage stands with added light supports to take max 8 pars (£39 each) and also the Maplin goal post type (£79) behind drums. I have 4 pars each side with 2 on goal post along with various effects incl lasers, projectors, scanners all for effect. Positioning some effects or pars on floor without blinding musicians is also a great effect. I've also looked at the block wash type you are talking about as I've found the LED pars don't flood a stage but have a 20-25% beam angle. Secret as mentioned is to get as much height or depth as possible to cover more stage area. Dave
20. Nice bass. Been thinking about getting one of these - still for sale ??? Watching one on ebay that finishes today and its also central belt area. Dave
21. Nice bass and great price. I'm maxed out on basses at moment. Looking forward to seeing you again at Lanark in few weeks. Have a good one Dave
22. Nice looking bass but i already have 2 Overwaters and a Fender jazz. Don't think i would be allowed another bass but she is a beaut and hope she goes soon. All the best. Dave
23. Yep agree these are great value for the money especially at this give away price. Great playability and range of tones. IMO they give a very MM style of sound but very adaptable. Good luck with sale. Wish it was here when i bought mine last year at considerably more than this offer. Dave
