Strange Occurrence on The Dark Side...............
ahpook replied to Jazzneck's topic in General Discussion
This has happened to me once or twice when I've bought a new bass - eventually it settled down to something more like what I was expecting (staggered saddles). I'd say keep and eye on it and see if it shifts in the future. -
Carole Kaye Teaches Gene Simmons Of KISS !!
The other side of the stories - here we go again.............................
-
errr... do I get a free pass to the Rickenbacker forums yet?
No, but R**********r may sue you for using the R**********r name whilst describing a non-R**********r bass !
It could be something inherent in the amp I suppose, as the switch is such an uncomplicated thing.
I suspect the footswitch isn't at fault, unless it's faulty in some way - I'd be looking at a problem with the amp.

Excellent post Meddle, thanks for the info.
Just bought one Hot Tubes yesterday and recorded a short demo: https://www.youtube....eature=youtu.be It is indeed quite dark and muddy but fortunately doesn't lose much low end if you turn up the tone. The full gain sounds too farty and harsh to my taste, I prefer it as a mild boost/overdrive to fatten the bass.
Good work - thanks

Do any 1U rack tuners have a standby mode where the light goes from side to side so it looks like a Cylon ? Cos that's what you want.
Loop - genius. That kind of music can only be written by amazing minds. Still good, still relevant.
Another Soundhead to add to the roster

I find getting a good fuzzy tone is best achieved with a speaker or speaker sim somewhere in the chain. On my home set up I'll record the overdriven sound (via my pedals, a Tronographic Rusty Box and then into an EBS MicroBass for the speaker sim) and a clean version at the same time which I'll tweak with some compression and EQ in Ableton, very occasionally an amp sim plug-in) I do mic up my amp occasionally, but I don't think it's that fair on the neighbours !! I'm a big fan of getting a good sound outside the DAW first
Anyway, more 60's extended widdling in this live version of Neil Young's 'Down By The River'. The solos start at 1:40 and the drummer does a 'kissy-face' at 2:15 but listen to the whole thing - it grooves along nicely.
Superb -
...a bass that is everything sound wise to suit every taste, mass produced and available to every pocket not just one off custom job...
Is that really a realistic aim ? You can please some of the people all of the time, etc....
Yeah, I'm going to stick up for it too - it is rather Coltrane-esque, just executed on a (12-string?) guitar and played in the context of a rock song rather than jazz. I'll admit my ignorance having not been born 'til about 20 years after this came out, but I get the impression jazz and rock shared a lot of common ground at the time, as opposed to these days when a lot of rock musicians refer to "the 'J' word" with a mix of disgust and fear.
I also think it's prefect bit of psychedelic music- it's disorienting, unexpected and just plain weird...all of which I'm told fit the bill. -
Haha, I've edited to clarify a bit more :-)
That's more like it ! I used to love Loop - saw them live many times...brilliant live band. Heavy as hell, but brilliant. The Peel Sessions album 'Wolf Flow' has some much beefier versions of some of the earlier material...well worth a listen. Let's have some more eh ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZlTbuLSIMU
BOOM! That's the one. Thanks very much. I've just listened to it at work, and the memories of teenage moody rebellion came flooding back. Funny how the name switched in my head from 'loop' to 'wire' :-D Thanks B.I.A.P and especially Ahpook :-)
Teenage rebellion ? More reminds me of long nights.....um.....'meditating' with a lava lamp

Very tidy ! Good work that man
Have a listen if you can stand it. 1:43 to 2:20...
Stand it ? I love it...it's an amazing guitar break. Inspired by John Coltrane's "India" apparently. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSViN6lwGKU -
Hope it sorts it for you - worth giving the rest of the pedal the once-over whilst you have it open, to check for any obvious shorts or dodgy connections.

Well, some of you may have read about my continuing troubles with my trusty old Ampeg SVP-Pro, and I've been keeping my on out for something second-hand that could preplace it....and up pops an Ashdown RPM-1 EVO II pre on Ebay for local collection, just up the road from me. Got it for a decent price, brought it home and plugged it in this eveing. A couple of squirts of switch cleaner cured a couple of slightly noisy pots and it sounds great. Can't really crank it up this time of night, but I'm very impressed so far.
...until they see a Sansamp, and then they stop muttering and just plug into it. Makes my life just a little bit easier. Fairly often.
I tell them my EBS MicroBass is 'a swedish-made Sansamp, but better...'
No-one sprang fully-formed from a riven oak one stormy night and was immediately able to play bass flawlessly, all the time. The road to great bass playing is paved with mistakes, self-doubt and lots and lots of practice.
It's worth bearing in mind that this is true of any endeavour. I'm very much in the OP's shoes - I feel I should be a much better bass player than I am, but I've never been booted out of a band for being a poor player and people ask me to play bass on their recordings now and again, so I can't be awful !! I'd say don't try an be 'a better bass player' - try and be good at one thing at a time. Choose a song you like and think is challenging (one of those "I'll never be that good" tunes), and learn it. Learn it inside out. Then think about what you just did....you taught yourself a tough song - one that impresses you. You're now a more impressive player by your own standards...have a break, enjoy your success and then move onto the next tough tune, or bit of technique.
I got mine because the venues my band were playing at were often using shared gear so I didn't always get to use my amp head.
I use a Tronographic Rusty Box for just this reason
