1.
index finger 'flamenco' ftw!
I've not tried that that much - getting the speed up with 2 1/2 fingers is enough for me !
  2.
Ahhhh a lovely wall.
Thanks - I painted it myself you know
  3. It's really up to you - you can get the speed of a pick with your fingers (learning Rush basslines got my speed up !), but some songs are just pick songs to me so I play them with a pick. It is good discipline to learn to do both so give it a go if you're into it, but you're not obliged to do one or the other - the strap's over your shoulder, so you get to decide ! Yay ! As for the difference in sound, you could buy a EQ pedal to even up the sounds if you like.
  4. Thought I'd add a family shot - the wall of jazz !

    Buffers

Dannybuoy and Sibob have nailed it. I think the thing to bear in mind is that there are guitarists/bassists out there who don't use any effects (yes, i know......weird isn't it ? ) so they may have just a cable between their amp and instrument. In this situation you're going to notice the effect of a long cable a lot more than if (as Sibob said) you have a buffered tuner in there, which I think most bass/guitar-ists do. So some people put a buffer in to get round the tone suck of long cables.
  6.
I sometimes find when i (haven't ) consume halucinogenic substances that my hands appear to me in all sorts of shapes.
That's when you can see inside your hands isn't it ?...like I could with a duck once. But that was a long time ago and I don't do stuff things like that anymore...officer.
  7. The little fold that sits about at the end of what 'palmists' call the heart line ? Everyone has one to some degree or another...it's just your skin folding isn't it ?
  8. All I can see is the outside of my hand....can you see inside your hand ? Cooooool Think a picture might help
  9. I realised last year that Jazzes are the basses for me. Tried lots of different makes and types over the last 20 years or so, but the bass I'd always pick up as my gold standard would be my 1985 MIJ 60s reissue Jazz. Everything just feels natural and 'right' about Jazz basses to me. So I sold most of my other basses and now have 3 Jazzes: A MIJ Geddy Lee Sig The above-mentioned 85 MIJ A MIC CV Jazz All have Badass bridges and I've changed the pickups on the MIJ and the CV Jazz. Oh, and I never, never use the bridge pickups (Jaco fans may gasp now )
  10.
I know - I was being an elitist, London-centric arse to deliberately annoy everyone.
Please....there's a good 8 million of them already...
  11.
Easier to find originals bands in London's famous London. Less so in the Godforsaken provinces. Ew!
I've lived in Leeds, Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle and have found numerous originals bands to play in in all of those cities, in fact Newcastle was easier than London. If you live in the sticks, I can understand the difficulty, but not that tough in a city IME I've played in metal bands, folk bands, indie bands, techno bands, arty post-rock bands, psych bands....all sorts....
  12.
But no one wants to do originals it seems.
I do ! I appreciate that it depends on where you live, but it's not that hard to find people doing original music IME - you may not get to make you ideal sort of music, but I'd rather do that than play covers. But I guess it's all down to why you're playing bass in the first place.
  13.
indeed... I doubt many tears will be shed for its passing. I'm convinced it's entirly to blame for the standard of London studios... everyone else thought "well if enterprise can get away with it so can we"
You may indeed be right there ! How they got away with beign so unabashedly crap baffled me. Every time I went there after the 1st time I did so under extreme duress. The place made me want to check up on the dates of my last immunisation boosters.
  14.
It has been...
I've not been down that part of town for a while (as you can obviously tell !) The world of music is a better place for its destruction.
  15. Just to add my tuppence-worth - my absolute favourite place in London is Bally Studios in Tottenham Hale. Great people, lovely rooms, easy parking and often as not you'll find them hoovering in the room you're going to use with a bit of incense buring to get that 'overheated drummer' smell out of your nostrils The odd time amps haven't worked they're straight in with a replacement, but very much a rarity. http://www.ballystudios.co.uk/ Enterprise in Denmark Street ? I refuse to use it...it should be wiped off the face of the earth with copious amounts of Old Testament brimstone.
  16.
....and originals acts. These projects usually fall apart before they see their first gig.
Not at all my experience, not by a long way.
  17. It's certainly not the way I'd do it...
  18.
Might be a Satellite photograph?
/Stands up, applauds/
  19.
...the person comes across like a moron or are reponses from those people who have decided exactly what label to give themselves like 'post pre modern gothic christian hardcore jazz metal band'. Those type of Ads leave me feeling like I'm completely clueless about music as I have absolutely no idea what the bloody hell they are on about!
If I were you, I'd stop deciding the band isn't for you before you've even met them ! Meet up with them/go to the audition, and then see. At the very least you'll have met some people who know you're on the lookout for a band, and even if you don't decide to continue playing with them, you might have your phone no. passed on to someone who does. Hey, you may even make some new friends ! Both have happened to me more than once. Writing band ads is always awkward - a "post pre modern gothic christian hardcore jazz metal band" might just turn out to be the band you're after, with people who are more on your wavelength than you think YMMV but I'd say turn up, turn it up, have some fun and then decide.
  20. I thought only people who had roadies used all-valve amps !
  21. You're right - it wouldn't work. I needed a footswitch for my Ampeg preamp and got the company that turned into Bright Onion pedals to build me one. I'd be after a footswitch with indicators on the pedal as you don't get any visual indication (like a lamp on the front of the Ashdown) to show you've turned on, for example, the Subwave.
  22. Hmmm....I suppose if it were a super fitted case it might be too snug for a strap.... Which is why I can put my basses away with the straps on
  23. Do yourself a favour - get a NOS Bakelite plug....tone for miles
  24.
An update: I emailed the folks at Warwick on Sunday explaining my situation and asking for some information on how to replace the tuner with a Warwick part. I got an email from them today apologizing for my inconvenience, and advising that a replacement tuner is on the way -- gratis, and giving me a tracking number.
Thought they might Shame about the tuner - I'm surprised as to how many people this kind of thing has happened to. Glad it turned out OK.
