A simple compressor with a 'Make up gain' knob would do it - it would also even out the dynamics for you, so I'd be tempted to use that rather than an EQ.

I keep my "thrown together in a shed" 1x12 in my shed (cost about £20) to make. I wouldn't put my hydrive in there though...

You could always use some old 5 string strings and use them to enlarge the existing grooves.
