News Update

Recent projects have included - - Complete set of cables for a studio set-up - An adaptor box and cables to allow two 4-ohm speakers to be used in series together with a third 8-ohm in parallel to give a total of 4-ohms - MIDI to XLR adaptors to enable the use of Mic cables as MIDI extensions. I have some really nice stereo cable - two individually screened cores in an overall round jacket - for making genuine stereo jack to jack cables and good quality headphone extensions. I've also made a few changes to the bassic-bits website Due to some changes of material costs I've also had to adjust some prices. A couple up and a couple down. Instrument cables are now £9 for a pair of ends, right-angle or straight plus £1 per metre for the cable. Still available in red, blue or black Patch cords are £9.50 up to 500mm and £10 from 550mm to 1-metre. Starquad mic cables £10 for a pair of ends plus £1 per metre for the cable. EH/Proco adaptors down to £5 for either type. Speaker cables unchanged. If you can pay by any method other than Paypal then I have some room to manoeuvre so pm or email me.
  3.
OK - probably an obvious one here. Amp send/return. Never really used it but my GA140 has a single send/return jack whick I presume needs a stereo jack input but what goes on t'other end? I've always used inline effects until I got the POD XT, and I now use that in the send/return to bypass the amp, but need to have it only part-way in to make the proper contact. How is one supposed to use a single Send/Return socket?
It'll be the same as a mixer insert connection. Stereo jack socket. Tip and sleeve is one connection, ring and sleeve is the other. To determine which you have to read the manual although if it works half way in then I bet the ring/sleeve is the return. You can buy mixer insert cables or get the bits and make one.
  4.
You'll have to bear with me guys, as there are loads of variables here... I've got a Superfly rack mounted with a Behringer V amp pro and an AKG Bug wireless transmitter (also a Korg tuner). I'm currently running one side of the amp into a Peavey 1x15 cab. At rehearsal last night, the sound would cut out for maybe half a second - and happened maybe a dozen times. New battery in the transmitter, and no lights flickering on any of the gear (including the Superfly). Only thing I noticed was that the Superfly was VERY hot (running it at 2 o'clock on the volume). Any ideas? Could the Wireless unit be overheating inthe rack case? there is 1u space above the Superfly, and the wireless only occupies half of the width of 1u above the space. Any ideas? The 'bug' was plugged into my Fender Precision, with the aerial resting on the bridge.
My initial thought is that the aerial should be out in free-aitr, not close to any grounded metal like the bridge. It just sucks up all the RF.
  5.
Has Andy left then Dave? This could be a really good little gig
Yes he has Nick. Shame as he was doing very well. and Yes it could be!! Good fun bunch of guys.
  6. My good friends, C:ountry R:ock A:coustic P:op covers band, Six Miles Away – www.myspace.com/sixmilesaway - are looking for a new bass player in time for their next gig on 24 May. Playing pubs once or twice a month for the last year, they have built up quite a following and have 11 gigs lined up until Christmas, up to 26 miles away from Guildford. The band members ages range from 42 to 51 – they’re not bothered about age but you might be! They play covers, some unusual, from the last 50 years of popular music as well as the odd, very odd, original – the sort of thing that goes down well with a wide ranging pub crowd. They usually practice once a week for a couple of hours - sometimes knocking off 2 or 3 new ones - and then go to a local jam for a pint or two and a try out of what they’ve practiced. They promote their gigs well and aim to make their hobby at least cover their beer and petrol! Whilst professional in their approach, they don’t take themselves too seriously – as they say, you can’t have too much fun! If you are interested, please message them through their myspace page.
  7. Aeros have black/white twisted pvc insulated wires. Fralins have blaack/white cloth covered wires. Lakland have red/black and green/black.
  8. Sorry to hear this Nick. As you might know my hearing is seriously cr*p now augmented with a lovely NHS digital amplifier in each ear. Call it all-day in-ear monitoring. I take them out when I'm gigging but I have to be away from other instruments, especially guitars in order to hear myself. If possible I like to be on my own on the drummers left where I can see his kick pedal. I also use a two cab stack so that the upper, more middy cab is closer to my ears. I'm a great believer in active basses so I can give the low mids a real boost which enables me to hear more clearly. The general concensus seems to be that the bass sounds much punchier, you know, you've heard us and of course you know the bass as well, it was yours.
  9. According to their latest email newletter GAK are shortly to become a Lakland dealer. Prices here Just done a quick check Thomann are cheaper.
  10.
OT? occupational therapy? occasional trousers? old trout? ohhh you mean oTt question... you ever been to north east Manchester?
"Off topic" and yes I have.
  11.
A great Festival, and a little story about it. Many years ago (about ten) I was on the road with a blues band touring Ireland and the UK. One of the gigs was at the Farnham Maltings, at the time I lived in Manchester and having been on the road for two weeks was missing my missus and new son (he's now 11 and has brother and sister) we got to the gig set up and soundchecked and off to the digs to shower etc for the gig, walking back down the road to the gig I walked through Farnham and thought to myself "what a nice place to raise a family" Do the gig, go home and think no more about it. Spin forward 8years and I'm planning a move with the whole family as most of my gigs are now in or around London and we fly regularly from Heathrow for foreign gigs. My cousin helped us find a house in Aldershot a little cheaper than surrounding areas due to being a little scruffier and the Army association, but coming from North East Manchester it feels like a relative idyll to me. Shortly after moving down my cousin says to me "come on I'll show you the area" knowing I'm into music and playing he says I'll drive you past one of our local venues, I say "great" and off we set. I had no idea where we were going then things all of a sudden start to feel familiar, we turn a corner not 2 miles from my new house and f*** me theres the Farnham Maltings. Me..... Smug.... hope it wasn't too boring for you
A bit OT but welcome to the area. I've lived in or close to Farnham for most of the past 50 years.
  12. Excellent. That is a far better response than the one I got. All is now clear.
  13. I now have some nice Starquad cable, the same sort as we used in TV and Radio studios. It is very good for use in electrically noisy environments, like on stage, where there are lighting control cables, power cables, etc. I can do any length with XLR connectors. For example a 10-metre cable is £19.50 plus postage.
  14.
Interesting, Thanks OBBM. Just thought it was an important point to note as karlbbb is thinking about a DHA Preamp (IIRC all DHA stuff is Valve driven) with an Epi cab.
No, no, no!!!! Valve pre-amps are fine. I used an Alembic F1X and a BBE BMAX-T with a QSC and the UL310. You mustn't use Epi cabs with valve power amps or all-valve heads.
  15.
I want to get a P Bass, I like the sound of them but when I tried them out I just could not get used to the thicker neck. Any suggestions guys?
Do you mean neck width? If so, there are some 70's Fender Ps that were made with jazz necks as does the Squier P-bass Special. Also the Mexico P Special. The Aerodyne Jazz has a jazz neck and a P pick-up. The Fender experts will chime in soon. Then of course there is the Lakland Duck Dunn which is a P with a jazz neck.
  16.
I've heard that the Epifani stuff doesn't sound so good with Valve pre/power amps. Is that the case, do any of you run an Epi with a vlave amp?
It's not a matter of not sounding so good, they are not designed to work with low damping factor amps. They are short throw speakers designed for use with amps with a high damping factor and consequently tigh control, which valve amps can't do. Last year I asked Epi about using their cabs with a valve head. This was the response.
To answer your question about the speakers they are always custom made to our specs, that’s why they sound different. In order to use them with tubes they would have to be made differently. Tube amps generally have a different sound fat and round but not necessarily as responsive. The NYC cabs were not made for tubes either
.
  17. +1 for QSC. I ran a QSC PLX1602 bridged into a UL310 for a year without problem. It was excellent.
  18.
No???? Sorry for going off topic but this is good....
It's rather mundane really Nik. At the time I joined Bassworld in early 2003 I was playing for a band called Old Blue Moses so I decided my moniker should be Oldbluebassman. This quickly got abbreviated as usual to OBBM by the forum members and when the opportunity arose to re-register after a server crash I elected to be OBBM. I left that band at the end of 2005 having complained about being short-changed by £10 for a gig and being publicly fired by the band's singer. The name stuck. The story went about saying the band needed 2 vans to go to gigs. One for the kit and the other for the egos. There you are, very boring. Perhaps we should start a new thread about band firings.
  19.
But what does OBBM stand for or mean? 'Overlord Bass Bash Merchant' is my guess
You've never heard the story?
  20.
Who is this OBBM???? lol lol.... See you at the Bash Dave ;o)
Indeed you will!!!
  21. Due to unforseen circumstances this has had to be postponed until later in the year.
  22. I would think it is very unlikely that it would be a 12AX7/ECC83. Radios use the same physical profile valves such as the EF** series for the RF stages and ECLs for the audio stages. ECC83s are more likely to be found in old PA amps (Vortexion, Linear, Grampian) and some high-end hi-fi as well as guitar amps. The only sure way is to remove the valve and see what it says.
  23. If this is the one I think it is then it's a bit of a high class tart. I bought her from Walbasist and then sold her to Paul_C who sold her to .......... So what comes next Al.
  24.
Hi OB, I got mine off of ebay from this guy in the USA, thomasldh copy his name and paste it into ebay. I first saw these about 18 months ago and had to have one!! for the look alone.... I should point out that I am not really a bassist and I only started playing 2 years ago (wife said it was a mid life crisis) so anything I put round my neck feels like a scaffold board!!! but for looks I would rather have the Aerodyne round my neck than my USA Precision. Would be happy for you to have a bash on it if your ever in Watford.
Thanks for your comments. The reason for the post was to try and judge reaction as I'd bought one from a friend to help out his need for cash. It's now in the For Sale section. Like most things reaction falls into two camps. Love or hate. I have had a play with it and as you say it has a great neck. I need to try it through my rig to see about the pick-ups but using headphones it had a very wide tone range. Probably killer with some Wizards. The slab front doesn't bother me as my Ray is like that and my style is such that my forearm is not pressed into the bass so that wouldn't be a problem. I only bought is as a favour and I can't really justify keeping it. The finish is so good that I would be terrified of dinging it the first time out.
