Would treating it to a fresh coat of gunstock oil help do you think?
It couldn't harm eh. Just make sure that moisture isn't being trapped in.

I've just noticed that this thread is about a MM. I'd noticed that the OP was looking for an Ibby Musician the other day and my dyslexia read it as the same word. Re : my earlier post I'm not suggesting that all MM necks are balls... although mine is my only bass that needs a seasonal tweak.
... what does it Rich, porous grain or something?
Yeah that's my guess. Just wood that's a little less dense than normal reacting to jumps in temperature and expanding in directions that for us ain't too handy. I've heard of maple boarded necks with the finish chipped or missing can also suffering from this - I guess the natural oils in rosewood and ebony etc. help protect against moisture ingress in those that would normally be susceptible to it.

Yeah some necks are balls - the woods are susceptible to temperature or humidity change... best case it just needs set up - worst case it needs set up and you can't leave the house with it (or get a new neck). Why did you buy the bass if he told you it was unplayable under such conditions?
5. Or place your location under your avatar.
6. Send Ashdown CS a friendly email and see what they say. It wouldn't harm to tell them your on Basschat
7. Bump for a very beautiful example at a knockout price.
8. Woohoo I just found (what I thought was) my lost vid of Mike ^ having a mad moment playing my toilet seat bass (The Pee Bass) at the last bash. (apologies in advance for my lame vocals )
9. You have some damn nice basses Oli.
10.
A Marlin has High action if that counts?
Touché.
11.
I think there could be an age gap thing here to some extent, not so much with the £KKK's stuff but those who are mad for cheap stuff are either too young or possibly started playing later to remember what cheap tat was like ,please dont take offense and I know some people will of played some old Jap crap thats better than an Alleva etc, I like old cars in the same way as some people like 'interesting' basses, but Im not that old and the beginner stuff which was not that cheap really maybe £150 was terrible and Im 100% certain there are people out there that bought them/had them as Christmas presents who gave up playing long before they would if they had something like a Sue Ryder P never mind something as good as a new Squier. Im sure many of us remember all the sh*t makes Audition, Marlin, Hohner etc etc unplayable in many cases IME.
Ah right that clears up an earlier question from someone - so anything over a Marlin is high end.
12.
All I wanted to say was that I find it really hard to agree with a view that says people's abilities, or needs, aren't good enough to own more expensive equipment (whether it be musical instruments, golf clubs or anything else for that matter). I've heard this argument soooo many times and I never understand it. I can't see why someone's abilities should have anything to do with what instrument they play, club they use or, a very common example, what car they drive. ..... 13. Was going to ask the same. If so for the record I'd be interested in the bridge cover provided it's not too new looking.
14. Bought a pair of Eminence drivers off Adam. Great guy to deal with. Smooth transaction all the way. Cheers mate. Rich.
15.
...I have no idea what it is. I bought it years back off ebay and it's been in the loft for most of that time - your guess is as good as mine!
Eeeh <- *buzzer sound* You are not allowed to say on here that it was in a loft for years unless it was Entwistle's loft.
16.
You have a PM
Replied. Stick a couple of bob in the BC coffre when you get it.
17. Good stuff. Do you think it might have been an errant vibration that was being picked up which you have now "fixed" by playing harder? Playing hard to clear the path of the pot wiper sounds a little like blowing down the phone to clear the fluff at the exchange... if you're old enough to remember that one? Regardless, get some switch cleaner on your pots just in case.
18. Could it be that the bassier the tone the hotter the signal? I have to be careful with my 'ray's settings depending what I'm playing it through as it can do this.
19.
I will have an ask round a few music shops about a cardboard bass box on monday to give me something to ship it in then.
Cycle shops have perfect bass sized boxes too.
20. They are worth it. The more expensive your bass the righter you are on bass forums. Seriously though, I suspect a lot of the uber expensive bass' price tags are unjustified in terms of incremental real-world improvements. I'd hope that a portion of the price goes toward an exemplary after-sales service.
21. That's the nicest tits I've seen on any bass.
22. Weird, it does look look like 2 tones (obviously the pots are earthed) and an unnecessary anti-pop resistor at the jack. Someone's been playing sparky. If you've got 2 pups in that OLP then yeah make it vol/vol... unless you prefer a balance knob.
23. Yep I figured it is the tuner ear that was stiff. It need not be and should in fact move as freely as your original ones. The tightness of a tuner is mainly down to how firmly the rear capstan screw is torqued down however excessive tightness is usually due to the capstan being impeded by the front bush. If this is the case with your extender you will have problems getting a constant and accurate detune. The wiggle trick I mentioned before helps re-seat the entire assembly to the point where it is most comfortable.
24.
Extender fitted and seems to work fine. Tuner slightly stiff, but hopefully its because its new (turned ok in slot before extender fitted). Just need to give it some welly next week at rehersals, before trusting it to a gig. fingers crossed it will be fine! no more detuning or changing guitar!
If it's too stiff it may be down to a bit of misalignment and you could wear it out prematurely. Slacken off the screws slightly and give the tuner ear a few wiggles back and forth to bed it in then while still under tension tighten them up again. Swathe all moving parts including the face where the lever presses against the plate in Vaseline and it will last you a lifetime.
25.
... nothing to say about this bass except its immaculate, beautiful, and plays great!! .....
What's it's DOB?
