1. A tiny nip up on the t/r should lower that action for you.
2.
The bass? The headstock looks the wrong shape (the G tuner is skew-whiff, though they do look like MM branded ones) and fake tattoos are easy to come by; the neck plate is all wrong (aside from the fact it isn't a MM plate it looks the wrong size and shape)... isn't it? The bridge also looks cheap even though the mounting screws are located as per MM, the addition in front of the bridge is immaterial. I genuinely had that tagged as a fake and wouldn't have touched with a BP at 100 paces!
'Fraid so. All these pics have been lifted from musicmanbass.org The headstock is fine. Here is an '86-7 ... and here's it's skunk stripe (this was the one point I had to check up for myself when this first got flagged) ... As for the bridge (like I said before) it's either off a Bongo or a SUB... Bongo 4 ... SUB 4... The ebay pics aren't great but I thought I could see the "Music Man" embossing so I'm guessing it's the Bongo bridge. It was mentioned earlier that the pup placement was wrong... it looks fine to me but I can see how you could make that call given the extra plate in front of the bridge. Compare it to this one... ... also the controls are fine for 3eq. As for the 4 bolt plate? These were used up to '90-1 and look a lot smaller than you think . Part of me wonders if it had a refin but there isn't enough firm evedence to say so... apart from that it all adds up to me.
3. I'm fairly positive it is genuine.
4.
He may not thank me for the challenge, but he's certainly built for the job! ...
Yeah thanks a lot mate. Yeah looks pretty doable. A shot of the heel would be nice. Although the beauty of a one off job like this would be that you could shape the recess to fit whatever it is to be mated to. Not knowing the original, I presumed that it would have been chambered but looking at all that metal at the head it might knock the balance off.
5. OK then, here's a wee sneaky peek. Totally unpolished, the overcast skies and my dodgy camera doesn't do the vibrancy of the purple any justice but... (I've put this pic in your folder too Dave )
6. Sometimes the top (handle) screws on amps like this hold the chasis frame too.
7.
Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe V Neck. This item has a cracked truss rod thar needs replacing. The neck is also warped and fret board is held on by a poxy resin.
Be he perchance of tha poirate persuasion?
8. Never. These old Series E's are like hen's teeth over here - do not mod it in any way, shape or form. This bass will be worth something in years to come.
9. I'm not sure you should be looking at a Fender Jazz as a back-up bass to a Stingray, apples and oranges - fair enough if you just want to take 2 basses along for diversity though... which leads us neatly by default to option B - your luthier. He should be able to build you something that can do both sounds - in this case a J/MM is relatively easy... ... and then you have the 'ray as a back-up to your custom.... at least the for tunes that you want a 'ray sound for.
10.
Very neat job!
Merci beaucoup. Actually I think this bass (the whole thing not just the bit I did) may still up for sale on here... whoever buys it will be getting something rather special for for their money.
11.
Not sure that its even a Fender given the position of the bridge screws....
I think it's just a MIM V. The CNC hole in the pocket is a dead give away... should be one under the p/g too. In fact I recenly did a custom refin on one for one of the lads on here... same bridge.
12. Ah well there you go. They started using the "non-dot" logo the very next month.
13. Bangin' bass... and one of the early ones too by the headstock logo.
14. BTW, cheers for the kind words guys.
15.
I spoke to a well known British bass builder a while back and asked how long it takes him to a build a bass from scratch including neck, body, custom active circuit and winding the pickups and he said 2 weeks I asked if that included letting the paint harden and polishing time and he said sure, 2 weeks from start to finish. But he made it clear that he never gets the chance to focus purely on building only one bass, he's always got urgent repairs and setups, sourcing of figured wood, hardware, accounts, phone and emails to answer, shows to attend. Plus a waiting list for new builds. As a result it can take up to 12 months to get a bass from him.
Yep that's closer to the mark (although you need at least 2 weeks for your final paint/finish to gas off)... but some of us can come in quite a bit sooner than that.
16.
Selling on behalf of my uncle....
Why is it that uncles never sell their own basses by themselves?
17.
And it's a fiver. MB1. Is that the "Buy it now" Price?
I wish it were.
18. Hey, no problemo mate. Next time you're passing through Aberdeen....
19.
...The bone nut on mine is spot on, the assembly is superb, he re-does the neck pockets so they're super-snug and marries the bridge to the body perfectly, despite not being 'string through body' my p resonates unlike any fender I've ever tried (and I've had a few), it's much more like the piano like Lakland I have!...
He must be painting them too if that's the case. Adding or removing material from the neck pocket will always require re-finishing.
20.
Thanks! 4-6 weeks is pretty quick in my humble opinion. Did the price include shipping? Were there any problems or extra charges re customs and that sort of thing?
A little too quick... for full custom builds methinks. edit : Ah there ^ you go.
21. G&L L-1000. Leo's own upgrade to his original design. The humbucker setting stays true to the original tone but it also packs single coil and special split coil options to add some variation. I put flats on my '81 for that old school P sound and it kicks ass.
22. What about an Epiphone Ripper? I think I read a review that said Epiphone got the sound wrong and made it sound more like a Grabber. It would kill 2 birds with 1 stone if you want to keep the Grabber look as well as the sound.
23. Big fan of the trans blue-burst and maple. Sweet.
