1. On a budget go for a Korg DT-10* or a Pitchblack. The Boss ones are too flakey imho, even if they are "the industry standard" apparently. If you really want a great performer (and with drop D tuning software installed) invest in a Polytune... it'll be the last tuner you ever buy. I'm waiting for the CGCFAD tuning to come out - I mentioned it to one of there team and he said they'd be looking into it. *I still have my DT-10 boxed up somewhere as I couldn't let go.
2.
I'm having real trouble getting my PW mini headstock tuner to pick up a dropped D, and it just does nothing when I try to tune the B on my 5er! Anyone got any tips, or is it just not up to it?
Mine works ok on my drop C bass but it does have it's occasional moments of cluelessness. If it does, I just ping a harmonic on the 12th (or 5th). Truthfully I wouldn't trust a clip-on for down-tuned basses at all as you really have to be uber accurate (especially if like me, you play the occasional chord)... that's where my Polytune comes in.
3. Interesting vid. Amazing how so much of it seems to be just done by eye in it.
4.
....This is currently across the room from me and very much not for sale. ....
Trades?
5. Sounds like a wee squirt of switch cleaner might be in order.
6.
MB1. "The audience will be impressed whatever you decide to do with it?" Really?
Depends on the audience I suppose...
7. Hahaha check this I'm actually shouting at my screen - It's a very f*cked up Bronco. Stop bidding you muppets.
8.
.... im not sure about the boomy 7th fret thing. It sounds to me this could be a certain freq that is getting boosted somehow, maybe the amp or cab is causing this...
Exactly this ^ Try different settings on the amp (frequency sweep if poss) or plugging it into something else to see if the phenomenon persists.
9.
Thanks guys. Theyre actually going to be put through an East U Retro if it makes a difference! Any other offers? A
Ah in that case just fit a pair of appropriately sized carrots... everything sounds hot through a JE.
10. Don't you think you're underselling it a bit Matt? That homemade trolley was expertly crafted by a local luthier. This cab used to be mine type bump.
11. I've got Bill Lawrence j45s in my custom 5er (genuine ones - not the naughty ones that use his name) along with a Schack pre. A more broad ranging, open sounding set of pups I've never heard. Like hen's teeth though. If I didn't have these I'd probably go for Nordy NJ5FS's (although NJ4SE's fit mine).... but they are a different kettle of mid focused fish.
12. Yep. I had a seasoned player round mine yesterday noodling on a fretless P I'd put together with an SPB-1 and a varitone. And in the 5 minutes he was playing away to himself he nailed (what to me is) the perfect P tone about a dozen or so times, lots of the time it was just "a fretless P tone" but those dozen or so times were "hair on the back of the neck moments" for me.
13. Just because it's played on a nice P bass and associated with a famous "P sound" player it needn't be putting out a trad P sound. To my ears a lot of these examples could be just about almost any muddy bucker bass. For me, using the examples so far and despite the vastly differing playing styles, the trad P sound comes in somewhere between the Santana one and the Blues Brothers/Aretha Franklin one (even though the 1st Duck Dunn one didn't hit it on the nail for me). There's an almost imperceptible (yet obvious) pinched woody overtone... that to me screams trad P. my 2p
14. Yeah that was a great demo. Thanks for sharing. Actually Luke you aren't too far away from chez Cringean. Why don't you give him a bell and see if he can spare some time to give you a guided tour and explain the filter in more depth. He's a top bloke and is usually always up for a natter of the bass variety. If you don't end up ordering something on the spot, the very least you'll come away with are few more tidbits on real basses than you did when you arrived... I always do.
15. Direct sunlight will do the trick but it may take one or two decent British summers to get there. If you want it now then get your mate to refinish it with a tinted lacquer. If you don't get tinted in the type that he used then a few more coats of the same (unless it is extremely pure) should deepen the tone slightly. Or just leave it. Who's going to notice when you are on stage anyway?
16.
I've just noticed this but any reason why the last fret on the neck only covers the D and G?
Well spotted that man. In all honesty there is no real reason. Basically it's quirky and I'm showing off.
17. I'm sure there are some samples on yt.... I know for sure there are some live performances. I'd find you the links only I'm on my phone.
18.
It's for drying your socks, I think.
Ahhh right. It's so obvious once it's been pointed out.
19. That's not what Mel says. /smut I was thinking that it was sprung loaded with the pups like some crazy whammy so you could wobble them for a tremolo effect.
20. They certainly broke the mould when they came up with that one. What does that big bar (which looks like one of my kitchen cupboard handles ) do?
21.
Oops so it is, I stand corrected
It's easy to get distracted while watching such awesome playing* (*well miming)
22. It's hardly surprising, as I build my own, that most of my herd are one-offs. Here is my main player for the foreseeable.... And of course there's no show without Punch....
23.
You can see him miming with a maple necked PJ in this video from TOTP 1978
Is that the right vid? That just a P.
24. Yep a few porkie pies there like.
25. +1 about the lazy seller. Also for that price it will most likely be disappointing... unless of course you are intentionally going for a thin dull sound.
