1. Good on you mate. Some people don't hear it and poo-poo the idea that it makes any difference at all. It may be worth noting too, that the quality of the union between neck and body also affects the tone.... although this again is subjective.
2. I only ever use genuine Fender parts for this kind of thing. They aren't as cheap as the alternatives but they are high quality and tough - they also have a nicer deeper chrome colour than the cheaper "bright" chrome ones. Trust me, you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to screws. You can pick them up from ebay.
3. Nice one Steven. Don't worry about that fret buzz - it's kind of part of the 'ray sound. To my ears it adds a glassy/ceramic quality to the tone. As for the strings? I only ever use Sadowsky Blue Labels on my 'ray (have to buy them from the States) they have light blue silks on them. If you are very lucky you may have inherited a set of these. I'll post a pic later so you can compare. Rich
4.
A couple from the 'School of Rock' battle of the bands I organised a couple of years ago at my old work:
Are you a presenter on T4 in your spare time by any chance?
5. Did you have to solder an earth wire to the outside of the pot? If so you may have overcooked it a bit. De-solder the terminals an test them for resistance with a multimeter.
6. I got a shot of Neepheid's one before he sold it and it got [s]butchered[/s] customised. I was pleasantly surprised at the ballsy tone and how comfortably it sat on your shoulder. The neck is quite wide and because of that extra bit of wood running up the middle there is no possibility for slapage (well popage). I would have one if I needed one.
7. Does the truss rod work ok?
8. Wood veneer. You can either jam bits in as needed then fit the bushes or as what I've done in the past is ream out the holes and glue entire veneer collars in place which when dry allows you to sand out the holes exactly to the size you require.
9. In full mythbuster tradition, I'm gonna stick my neck out here. I have a feeling it might be mainly down to a combination of "bad technique" and the size of the players hands. I have huge hands and find it easy to play most width necks. I haven't always had good technique though so guess my big hands may have helped. When you think about it P necks and J necks all have the same sized heels and it is perhaps only after about the 7th fret that major differences appear in neck width and string spacing. If you are the type of player that loops their thumb over the neck then you might feel the difference in width more because you are "gripping" the neck. If you play with your thumb on the skunkstripe then you can pivot around it and the difference between the neck sizes feel less - the only important measurement becomes the distance between the G string and the edge of the neck rather than the entire neck width. With the luxury of my big hands I can play both necks and use both techniques as and when needed - I use the "bad" technique for Steady Eddie pentatonic stuff and also to reach my freakishly big thumb over to damp the E and A strings of required but can revert back to the skunkstripe for the more intricate stuff that needs "finger per fret technique".
10. I think 'rays sound frickin awesome with rounds, in fact they're probably integral to their punchy sound. Unless you are intentionally aiming for a specific sound I can't see the point in trying flats.
11.
MB1. ...I know you love a Challenge! ...Candy Apple Red it is then!
Bar steward.
12. He he I voted "any colour". I know you're mad keen on originality but speaking as a player and not a collector there's a satisfaction that a (well done) refin has over a restoration. Besides I'm the one painting it and I can't be arsed with CAR. I kinda like the white from those above - also the yellow looks interesting to me, although I'd imagine it not getting too many votes (probably why I like it ). As far as the serial number goes, if it were me I'd take pictures as proof then sand the neck as much is as necessary to remove the scorched marks. You could always stash a pic under the p/g for future owners - not that you'd sell your dream bass anyway.
13.
Much better bridge too. J.
Ooh controversial.
14.
God, I remember these!! They popped up (guitar and bass) in a shop in Edinburgh back in the '80s and I nearly went for one! That Baddass is non-original, though. Hideous to look at now but thanx for the memory and good luck with the sale.
That's not a Badass it's a Schaller 3D
15. You might be pleasantly surprised Steven. Yes the neck is P width(ish) but the front to back measurement is less, making for a very comfy fit imo.
16.
Sorry, all done by post. I had to print the pix off and send 'em.
Okey dokey skip. Cheers.
17.
Well, there you go! Write to them at:- UK Border Agency Coventry International Hub Siskin Parkway West COVENTRY CV3 4HX.....
Cheers. However I think I'd like to include attachments as proof. Do you have an email address I can use for this? I've been on their site but can't find anything appropriate.
18. I've looked all over on mine and can't find a commodity code.
19. Sold Frank my lovely '70's classic series Jazz. Smooth transaction, as they say. Nice guy to talk to too. Cheers Rich
20. That looks sweeeeeet.
21. Here's one. What if you think the item's value was way off on the declaration slip? I paid the duty, then queried the seller about it and he agrees that he put the wrong figure down.
22. Calling Neepheid!
23. If you get a click when you tap them (I presume that's what you are experiencing) then it is just a bad earth somewhere.
24. In case anyone on there asks, your beautiful "90's" ray serial dates it as a Jan-Feb '96.
