Imo body wood is the least influential factor regarding tone. Especially when the finished article is no longer the solid ingot of wood it started out as - cavities are routed, objects are inserted and mounted onto it and finally a finish is applied (remember the finish goes into the wood, it doesn't just sit on the surface). Most influential, in no particular order, is neck construction (for proof just think of the difference a carbon neck makes) and how well the union between neck and body is carried out, pickups, strings and of course electronic implimentation and design.... and fingers. When you consider how some of the most tonaly specific benchmark basses started out, I think Leo knew this..... From Leo's G&L workshop (Fender® basses were designed exactly the same way)...

UK Border Agency and import charges - please read!!
Ou7shined replied to Stacker's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for this. I'm expecting a bass to be released from customs today - the bastard charges will be in the region of £200. -
I think the hypothetical concept is getting lost now. Perhaps we should rename the thread... Imaginary place with an infinite amount of possible amenities, excruciatingly and somewhat ironically the only rule is "you're only allowed one of your basses" bass.

Status players, which model(s) do you have?
Ou7shined replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't own one but I having heard the likes of Dave Perry's and some others since, I've discovered that I really like the Status sound. It's just a matter of time before I get one. I do own a Series 4000 pup though. Does this count? -
anyone got an ampeg head with valves or something from the musicman family to swap??????
What's the big plan to sneak yet another rig past the missus this time? BTW to all interested in a deal, Steve's a topper of a bloke.

Have a gander here if you get stuck.

In short, yes. But it should be quite minimal and the adjustment decreases the less you raise them. Adjust each string in turn. Get it in tune, raise it, then tune it and check that it is still in tune at the 12th fret. If it is flat lengthen the sadle screw so that it travels toward the neck. If it is sharp tighten.

Don't get rid of it. Some madmen will actually like pay you extra for it if you come to sell. Wood expands and shrinks all the time lacquer is less flexible so it cracks. As long as there are no playing issues just leave it be.
-
That's not really extreme tbh. Extreme would be taking you E down to A and beyond.

Seriously though, how out of touch are you if your only option is to use WU in this country? Presumably they have access to a computer if they can get on Gumtree, therefore they have access to PayPal and/or bank transfer. And if you are a bit out of touch there are cheques, even bloody postal orders.

The best advice in this situation is do a test piece. Spray the primer on a similar material, let it rest for as long as you can resist the temptation (a day minimum) then try on some nitro. If it behaves ok then go for it... and pray it isn't a slow reaction.

Great basses. I had a black 'ray guard on mine. God I miss her. I wish to feck I knew how they though the check plate was a good idea though.

I like the bonsais. The E and G do look like they have a higher action in that last pic, yes? I wasn't directing the 2 saddle thing to you. I'm just so fed up with the comments from those that don't have the wherewithal that they are any less configurable than brand X's super bridge. I think I need to start a thread.
-
Dude I'm confused. How has fitting a BA improved it? You already followed the rake of the curvature with your 2 saddle bridge. If you haven't just recreated it with the BA, presumably now you have levelled the strings in line with the pup therefore making the action on the E and G higher. Btw I think the 2 saddle bridge gets far too much bad press on here. I managed absolutely fine with mine (we're talking perfect intonation) - although to be fair it did take a little longer to set up as when you pull one end forward (for example) to adjust, it's counter part goes backwards, which knocks out what you've already done - annoying but it just takes a little patience.
...which is why after 3 phonecalls to the man and the fact that he couldn't be bother initially to make a custom order one I nagged him and even offered to send him back the other one for him to keep/resell whatever and work on my new one, eventually he agreed to make one special in his spare time...
To be fair it did sound like you hassled him a bit earlier.
Yes, seems like a reasonable response to me, but sounds like he hasn't made the connection between the query and being bullied into making a one-off pickup in his spare time. ^_^
He he. I wasn't going to say.
Must say I like my 51 RI P a lot better since I started playing it through a Markbass combo, rather than a Hartke HA3500 and Ashdown MAGs, and I'm not convinced the SD Antiquity made that much difference.
I though the Antiquity was the tamest of the lot I tried - the original was better. You should try one of the others and you might like it even more. I'd love to hear what the Fralins can do.

You may have to readjust the truss rod and intonation but yeah it should be fine.

Qualitat. S.P.
Gillian Taylforth! That's rough. He ought to know better. How did he not hear it? Did someone send his monitors through a pitch shifter?
