1. Yeah it can be a pain sometimes. I have a wee boost button on mine which takes it from a 25w iron to a 130w in seconds just for such jobs.
2. It's kind of hard to see from the pic but it doesn't look like the solder has flowed onto the pot correctly, hence the sort of bubble effect. Maybe that's why it's not working.
3.
The nitro 'can' react to the rubber on certain stands/hangars but only if left on for a long period. The answer is to either wrap a piece of soft cloth around the stand or put it back in its gigbag/case.
Ah I've had this happen. Now I know why.
4. How long after the auction ended did you get the offer?
5.
Just looked up the serial number (E30634) which dates it as 2002 I believe. Do correct me if you know better.
Yep. April/May '02 to be exact.
6.
I'm pleased we've had some really common sense answers here. Ultimately it comes down to tastes and without being a visionary, who's to say what will be collectable in the future. The Japanese Fenders were panned in the early days and nowadays the JV Series are highly regarded. A lot of rubbish *can* be spoken about musical equipment (often by people who haven't actually played what they are slatting) and it's pleasing that this thread hasn't (yet) descended into the can of worms predicted.
Right. It's the naughty step for you for mentioning the F word in this thread.
7.
I own 3 OLPs. Nice. Not as nice as the EBMM Stingray, but I love those OLPs. Enough said. *very soon* I'll own a SUB ray 5-string... then I'll be able to see just how "Stingray-like" it really is.
Niiice. I've heard that the SUB 5 is more like a ray 5 than a ray 5 which is more like a Sterling 5. If that makes sense?
8. Those basses are like chalk and cheese. For me the choice is easy keep the SUB and ditch the Jag but my advice for you is do not make any rash judgements on sound based on what you hear at rehearsals, you get a better idea at gigs - if possible get yourself out front during sound-check.
9.
Warwicks, maybe, but only German made ones and only from certain periods. I'd say that ACG fits more of the collectable criteria than Shuker (except the JJB Signature) as most ACG basses have certain defining and unique features the most notable being the filter pre-amp. Shukers have too many differences between individual basses for there to be a definitive Shuker style. Same goes for Sei - fantastic basses but they are all too different.
The thing with Shuker is that you can tell it's Shuker without even looking at the headstock - they have a crispness and vibrancy and an attention to detail all of their own. Alan's basses are more organic to look at but sound fooking amazing.
10. Haha classic.
11. Sounds like a dodgy connection, you've got a +ve going to earth somewhere. Trace the route from your hot line from your pup all the way up to and including the jack socket. Luckily the wiring on a P is pretty simple.
12.
That's a nice looking ACG. What's the weight ?
Under a year. Boom boom.
13. I've found a good pic of a '74 P body and mine can exactly match all the screw holes (with some extras ) including the p/g centre one, the two upper thumb rest ones, the one on the north-west of the E/A pup, the one on the south-east of the D/G pup and the one to the front of the control cavity - all of which look to have been filled at the same time compared with other holes. I don't have the bridge rout though. click for bigger pic With this evidence, I think I'm gonna have to agree that it was a P and the humbucker is an after thought.
14. He he I was looking for example pics and found this. :brow: Don't worry, I wouldn't.
15. Nah that control cavity screams P. A Tele would just have a wee straight rout.
16.
Maybe it was supposed to be a tele bass, but then last thing on Friday afternoon someone realised they were a p bass short of an order and just monkey'd it together on the sly. Because he had a hot date to go home and get ready for and CBS weren't gonna pay him overtime were they? Money grabbing, neck mounting screw stealing (from the jazz) bastards!
Now this I believe.
Nice avatar... it took me a while to realise it was you despite looking at it with attention
Aye, it's easy to miss the bass in that pic.
17.
Im going chubb fishing Sunday can you send me 2 tins PLease????
Of course my serious answer for the op would be G&L.
18. Yeah I'm a bit miffed at mine too. The plan was to make something resembling my G&L L-1000 out of it... ... well that's obviously not happening now, unless I go for a solid finish which is a shame as I love the grain on it. I guess a pickguard is another option. [s]Regarding the mods, the thing is I'm almost certain that both pup cavities are original. The P pup lugs were obviously added to the cavity later on meaning that the pup could only have been held in with surrounds (I think). If so it's fair to assume that the same system was used for the neck pup too and there is strong evidence of that.[/s] edited presumptuous horseshit
19. I don't think it's all original.
20. Blinking flip. It's kinda fishy though isn't it. Brand New, Only Played Once Just To Try It Out And I Felt It Wasn't The Bass For Me. Stick it back on the rack and walk away then, don't buy it then try and pass it on at a profit.
21. You guys might be able to help here.
22. Just for fun, anyone wanna have a pop at ID'ing this body? I bought this solid wood, 2 piece (I'm guessing ash) body off here the other day. As you can see it had a great wodge of copper tape from the pup cavity to the neck pocket. I just thought someone was being overly cautious with their shielding. So I got quite a surprise when took the shielding off and found.... And that's not a wood infill.... it's cataloy. It appears to be a good quality body - 2.4Kg. The neck pocket dimentions and screw holes match that of Fender's. The P pup cavity seems to be original (eliminating a tele bass from the equation - the control cavity shape supports this too) however the lugs have been amateurly done at a later point. The wiring rout between the P cavity and the control cavity is very shallow ~5mm (big clue?) and the same "surface" rout was used from the neck pup to the P pup. There are some filled holes around both pup cavities suggesting pickup surrounds. It has 03-78 in pencil in the neck pocket which I'm taking to be a date. The only P bass I know of with a neck humbucker is Billy Shehan's... Was there production model that fits this description?
23. I've got to put in a good word for Status Hotwires. Tried most of the above but for me the Status shine through.
