iirc the covers dont come off the 5 string pups. will need to check mine to be sure beautiful bass btw,I would have loved this and bought it if I had seen it sooner
Ah fair point. I've only ever had 4 stringers.

I love a happy ending.

You make it sound like a gradual process. How exactly is it dying?
-
Sounds like it might just need soldering. What actually needs soldering is a different matter - it might just be a lead around the jack or it could be something a bit trickier on it's pcb.

MM pups actually come out of the plastic casings quite easily. You could just drop them out and fit spacers (blu-tac comes to mind as that's what I have in mine just to stop them dropping out when I'm fiddling with it but you could use double-sided sticky foam pads for extra depth) between the pups and the casing and that way you retain the original tone plus it is reversible should you want to move the bass on. I saw that bass advertised - bargain.
Original or otherwise, I make it a rule never to buy a vintage bass that's been in contact with the sellers underwear ...
Or from people that repeatedly say "brought" instead of "bought".

Pre-empting their vintage status a tad
Depends how you look at it. Early G&L models were produced in smaller quantities than pre-CBS Fenders. It's also a "signature" headstock, which weren't in production for long. Guess it all depends on your definition of "vintage".....
I have one of the very 1st G&L basses ever produced - waaay before the eye gouger headstock. If I could get over a grand for it I'd be well chuffed... but I can't see it... not yet anyway. -
...There is in fact a headless body waering a black greatcoat holding that bass........
Haha it took me a minute but I see it now.
How I would 'sheild' the bass from interference? And hypothetically speaking, would it affect the sound in a live performance? On a similar note.. the spec I saw for the Yamaha SBX 170 mentions - Dual P/J-style pups. What does that mean? Thanks to all!!!!!
Shielding is carried out by lining the cavities with copper tape/foil. There's lots of info on it if you search. Pay particular attention to the pickups in the pic below The bass 2nd from top is a P bass (Precision) The bass at the bottom is a J bass (Jazz) And the top one and 2nd from bottom are P/J basses. Can you see why?

Didn't Fred Flintstone play one of those?
Hi all, Been reading some stuff about 'humbucker' pickups and that they reduce excessive noise. Does that mean that if I buy a bass with single pickup coil or whateva, i will get louder unwanted hum from that bass if the volume is turned up on an amp which is connected to other equipment, effects pedals, etc? How bad would it sound?? Hope that makes sense... Thanks again.
In a nutshell, yep you can get hum from a lone single coil pup. But it is more often down to interference from the locale. There are only a few basses with just one single coil pup, the most famous being the 51 P. A Jazz bass for example has 2 single coil pickups but when both pups are used at the same volume, because of how they are wired they effectively become a single humbucker. Often as not hum can be dealt with by shielding.

Why don't bass companies do sound samples of their basses..
Ou7shined replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
I just don't think it comes across as well, as there are lots of variables lead to nuances between basses which appear pretty obvious in person but end up sounding pretty similar when recorded. It easy (ish) to tell a difference between a Jazz and a Precision, but between rosewood and maple fingerboards, and different pickups or different models, the differences could be so minimal as to actaully make the different options seem unnecessary or just for looks, which is not something companies would want. I don't mind 'ballpark' examples of the sounds of certain models of bass. However, most high-end companies are keen to stress that you can acheive 'virtually any' sound with their particular type of bass. So if they then have a video or audio demo of 'this bass sounds like this' it kind of defeats the point. Also the way I play will be totally different to the person doing the demo anyway, so really how useful is the sound sample anyway? Personally for me it doesn't work for cabs either. I think that Mesa Boogie did a big video blog on the differences between the different bass cabs. To be honest, although there was maybe some difference between the sounds it could have been down to mic placement, or that they used a different bass or for each cab (which seemed to me to defeat the point of a 'cab' test). As my guitar-playing brother would say '...Yep, it sounds a bass. Wow.'
Good point about the "virtually any sound". Totally, have you heard the Schroeder clips of all their cabs - a guy playing along with a drum kit filmed in some random room with the sound recorded by the camera's mic. -
So far then I'm blaming the amp. You need to try a different bass into your amp and your bass into a different amp.
-
There's a few different things it could be. Try another bass into your amp to eliminate it from the equation. If it's an active bass have you checked your batteries?

It is a good idea but it is all so subjective, for a start how many people have really nice auditioning speakers/headphones hooked up to their computer. Would you really want people scratching you off the GAS list because your online samples don't come across well. When I've heard some "corporate" sound samples they've tended to put me off anyway, if only because you invariably have some impresario riffing away as best as he can in a style that's not applicable to you. And who's to say that his fingers are getting the tone your fingers would? I think it might be best to hear a tone you like (maybe by chance) and then go and research how that sound is made. -
What makes you think that? Could it be that the bass is a pile of crap with a dodgy paint job, the strap is held on with gaffa tape and worse than that, the knobs don`t match!! Jez
Oh I thought we were talking about the train ticket.
....£450 will bag a Japanese Fender easy on the used market so it's understandable that this may not sell in a week....
A couple of USA's have gone for that on here recently too. I'm not saying it isn't but the body doesn't look like a Warmoth in these pics. As I said earlier, it looks more rounded and less slab-like than standard offerings. Maybe new pics can allay this?

I prefer maple (sonically and aesthetically) but it is of such a negligible importance to me that I've ended up with more r/w necks than maple.
