1.
Sounds like a StingRay to me...
+1 That's what I heard too... but I though it would be so predictable for me to bang on about 'rays yet again that I left that bit out for someone else say.
2.
Apologies in advance for a slight hijack but I am looking at a few Stingrays at the moment and was wondering if any of you MusicMan aficionados would be able to comment on price for me? I am looking at a 87 Stingray for £1300 and was wondering if this was about normal for an early-ish Ray? seems a little hight to me? Thanks, Nathan
I'm going to be a bit controversial here. £1300 isn't awful, considering that people have asked 2k for early Musicmans.... and got it. The controversy comes when you consider what you actually get for your money over a modern 2eq 'ray... the answer is not a lot, other than the panache of being able to say "I own an early MM". Stingrays have hardly changed in design since they first came out and the minute changes that have occurred certainly haven't been to their detriment. When faced with the question of buying a piece of MM history you should consider this £1500+ for a used bass + bragging rights or £750 for a newer used bass with (to all intent and purposes) the same look and awesome sound.... of course you could always pay £1300 for a brand new one + case, + warranty. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with owning an old one, it's just that before owning one, there are financial considerations with respect to bang for your buck. Are you a MM player or a MM collector?
3. I see a Ric but I can't hear one.
4. ^ Second hand Stingray prices go up and down like a tarts drawers. At the moment prices do seem to be on the up again. I wouldn't balk at paying £800 for a good one in a shop but realistically you could get one for less on here. I paid about £600 for my '97 a couple of years back. I agree with Pete, go for it if it feels right but see if you can get mats and a full tank thrown in.
5. Modding and tinkering our basses isn't always about getting your money back. It's a little sub genre that comes with the territory. Sometimes I think that I'm more in to modding than I am of actually playing basses. The first thing I think when I get my hands on a bass is "right what can I do to change/improve it". How often do we spend more than we need to on our actual playing hobby - then why is this wee aspect of it seen as pointless unless we can make a profit from it? There is an immense amount of enjoyment and self satisfaction to be had from experimenting with and creating a look, a feel, a sound all of your own. Go for it... if you make a good job if it you probably won't want to sell you first project bass anyway.
6. TIM?
7. ^ Same goes for me. Also the pickup placement on the Ibby looks a lot more usable - the J is further away from the bridge thus giving a fuller sound and the reverse P is IMHO a winner.
8. I get mine from http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk. Steve is a great guy to deal with..
9.
...9 out of 10 of the items you buy on here, the items are as described, so you know your buying what it says on the TIM...
Corrected.

No wonder there are hardly any unicorns left.
13. What are the pink spots either side of the bridge? (not the screw holes)
14. I agree with all of the above. As the great majority of the tone of a passive bass comes from it's pups it's a very worth while mod to do if you want to reap noticeable benefits. Swapping out your originals for USA pups is as you say an inexpensive mod so I say go for it. If you don't like the change you will get your money back on the pups and you will be able to use the experience to maybe go on to try other more boutique pups. I recommend Lindy Fralin or Delano pups if you want to try upscale a bit... Christmas is coming, start hinting to the wife.
15. Certainly sounds like an earth wire has come loose. It can't be confirmed until the control plate has been lifted and the 'lectrics have been looked at. If it is the case then a quick bit of soldering will fix it.
16. Both But it's all down to personal taste. You will find there's a market for genuine Fenders in just about any old beat up condition (from these pics yours doesn't look too bad - I'm only seeing them on my phone though) because it represents a players bass and this market will invariably fork out a surprising amount for the privilege of owning what it represents - rarity comes into it too. That's all about aesthetics though, my interest here is how your pro setup has arrived at the intonation being set as it is. Have there been any issues with the neck worth mentioning? I don't know about Fender pricing but there will be someone along soon to put a smile on your face.
17. If you'd followed the advice given in your previous thread on this very same subject you'd have this sorted by now. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=109217&hl=
18. Nice.
19. If it's quality on a budget you are looking for then you should definitely look into the Squier range.
20.
*blip* me! Has anyone here ever heard of the term "each to his own"? or.... one man meat is another man's poison, why are you lot so *blip*ing harsh on bloke's choice of bass? Don't like it? Fine, just STFU about it. It's rude! end of.
To be fair personal opinions on it's aesthetics are being asked in the thread title. You can't expect for only positive answers to be submitted.
21. He's obviously one of those guys who subscribes to the notion that nowadays buckle rash or "mojo" (said in Dr Evil voice while punctuating the air) adds to a basses value.
22.
ah feck wish i seen this earlier ou7shined will you sell the me bass
Aye sure..... once she's been done up like. The truth is that she's really starting to grow on me - been playing her all night and there's something about the unyielding heftyness (and the fact that despite being reassembled yesterday the neck relief was stable and she was still in perfect tune when I picked her up today) that appeals to me. Could be a keeper.
23.
Bloody hell - what's it made of - plylead? My back hurts just thinking about it. J.
My guess is considering the Swiss connection, it has nazi bullion stashed inside.
24. It may be hard to see through the packaging but they are very different. Nickle has a yellowy-pink tinge to it. In most cases chrome is plated onto nickle plating, if you've ever rubbed through a chrome finish by accident what you see is nickle underneath. Nickle tarnishes to black btw.
25.
Jealous now
She weighs in at a mind boggling 11 1/4 lbs. .......... Still jealous?
